A special visitor greets folks in the Eastern Sierra Santa brings the spirit of the season to towns up and down Highway 395 By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA— Visits from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, and their helpers, were all-the-talk around towns up and down US Highway 395, and if you missed a chance to sit and chat with Santa, you still have five days to be a good person. And, Santa wasn't the only spirit of the season to move folks to give this year, as a large number of the residents in the Eastern Sierra gave to the emergency causes of fire victims in Paradise, CA, and more local family emergencies.
To Wa' No Songs and Storytelling The Fort Independence Paiute Tribe held its annual To Wa' No (winter in Paiute) gathering, and tribal and community members spent the evening (December 14) making gingerbread houses, Christmas ornaments, cards, and singing and storytelling. Dinner was followed by visits from local law enforcement agencies

Dr. Dwayne Wilson, owner of Dwayne's Friendly Pharmacy, chatted with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Dr. Wilson's handlebar mustache, a rival with Santa's beard.

was seriously injured in a car accident early in December, and friends have helped her six children during this busy holiday season. Fund raising continues for Rose at the Mobil stations in Lone Pine and Big Pine, and an all-day event is planned for December 18, at the Lone
Dwayne's Friendly Pharmacy, located in Bishop, CA, has a nostalgic presence in the small town at the foot of the Sierra. From the outside, the five murals, called “The History of Medicine and the Local Pharmacy,” by Bishop Mural Society's, Philip Slagter, an artist who painted the scenes in 2003, remind people of the lives of local long-time, country doctor, Dr. Robert Denton, and pharmacist, Dr. George Deibert (and his daughter, Barbara Chinn). On the west side of Dwayne's is the “Will Rogers in Bishop” mural, with a crowd of townspeople (including Shirley Fendon, as a young girl) greeting the famous American cowboy, actor, humorist, and newspaper columnist during the 1930s. It was said that Rogers bought the kids ice cream at the local soda shop and pharmacy. Dr. Dwayne Wilson, owner of Dwayne's Friendly Phar-
macy, since 1987, has carried on many of these folksy traditions, including keeping his ever-famous handlebar mustache and store logo, and the red and white striped paper bags given to customers. Dwayne's remains a town anchor for news, prescriptions, and the year-round seasonal gifts found in complete department stores (of days gone-by). Hallmark cards, gift wrapping, hot chocolate and apple cider, sugar cookies (during the holidays), and eyecatching displays bring in customers in the droves at Christmas time. Meet Bishop’s new City Administrator The Bishop City Council voted unanimously to appoint Mr. David B. Kelly as City Administrator at their regularly scheduled meeting of December 10, 2018. Mr. Kelly and his wife, Mrs. Jernon Kelly, were both in attendance on Monday evening and briefly introduced themselves. Mr. Kelly has worked in the public sector for over 20 years and has served in many roles. Just to name a few, he has served as an assistant public works director, a city administrator, a director for human resources and risk management, and an administrator for county commissioners. He has worked in Colorado, Washington and Arizona. Mr. Kelly enjoys financial and data analyses and finding unique solutions to solve problems. Mr. Kelly is a graduate of Brigham Young University, with a degree in Economics. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado. Mr. Kelly has been actively involved in his church and with the Boy Scouts of America in various capacities his entire life. He served a full-time mission and enjoys service projects of all shapes and sizes. Mr. Kelly has a blended family of six children, four girls and two boys, with three left at home. He and his wife also have one precious granddaughter. Family is a big part of his life! They enjoy spending time boating, fishing, hiking, and camping together. About a month ago his family did their first mud run. Mr. Kelly likes to garden, fix things around the house, and do genealogy. Mr. Kelly started his new position with the City on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018. Mrs. Kelly is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Youngtown, Arizona, and will be looking to continue her career in Bishop. The Bishop City Council welcomes Mr. and Mrs. Kelly and their children to Bishop!
