A Tribute to Jack Stout
Loving husband, son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend
Jack Stout was born April 4th, 1937 to Henry and Mildred Stout in Los Angeles, Ca. and passed away at his home in Big Pine, Ca. on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022. Jack was an only child who grew up in Los Angeles where he attended John C. Fremont High School, graduating in 1956. Throughout his childhood years, he spent memorable summers with his grandparents, fishing, hunting and exploring near Clearlake, Ca. These fond memories from years past, would continue to be a special time, one in which he would share stories about throughout his life with his daughters and grandchildren.
In 1957, he married Jeri Nelson, who would continue to share the next 64 years together as husband and wife. Jack and Jeri raised two daughters, Sherry and Cindy Stout, creating a life for his family in Los Angeles and later relocating to Big Pine, Ca where he settled in, calling the Owens Valley his home.
While living in Los Angeles, Jack attended the Los Angeles Trade Technical College, training as a plumber apprentice. During this time, he also explored a career with the Downey Police Department and began intensive training with the Los Angeles Sheriff Academy. He ultimately decided to pursue a career in the trade industry as a Journeyman Plumber. Jack continued his career as a plumber, working for the next 11 years until he decided to relocate his family to Big Pine.
The last day on the job, he suffered a work related injury that left him hospitalized with head and back injuries, leaving him partially paralyzed, with hearing and vision loss. After being released from the hospital and with a long road of recovery ahead, Jack joined his family in Big Pine where he continued to build strength and begin working on his new home. It was during this time, he taught himself how to operate the backhoe while only having limited use of his vision and right hand. Jack would ultimately become an expert backhoe operator completing difficult jobs spanning from Horseshoe Meadows to Westgard Pass. This would be a lifelong career, operating “Jack Stout Plumbing and Backhoe Service” with his wife, Jeri, from 1971 until his retirement.
Jack was a mentor to many people throughout his time in Big Pine, one of which was Bill Eddy, who became more like a son working and learning from Jack throughout the years. While living in Big Pine, Jack had many hobbies including gun smithing, reloading, target shooting, hunting, mining, metal detecting and rock hounding. The people he enjoyed these hobbies with were his family and close friends, including Pat Saenz, his childhood friend and Mike Nelson who was like a brother to Jack as well as Glen Brewer. He shared his love of prospecting with Carl Lawerence, Tom Rudder, Tim Johnson and Charles Brady where they enjoyed mining throughout the local mountains in the Owens Valley and across the White Mountains in Lida, Nevada. While working hard and creating a life for his family in Big Pine, Jack spent years building close friendships with Ron McGhie, George Kelley, Fred Colvin, Dennis Tillemans, Richard Williams, Don Wofford and Norm Bird. These friendships continued to grow through the years, spending days together on jobs as well as enjoying time together outside of work. As retirement approached, Jack and Jeri spent several months each year escaping the cold, winter weather, by snowbirding with close friends, Bill and Earlene Wright in Quartzsite, Arizona. Anyone who knew Jack, knew he enjoyed the sunshine and desert heat.
Jack Stout was loved by friends and family for his many qualities and is remembered as a man whose character was built on integrity, honesty and the value of hard work who would go out of his way to offer a helping hand to family, friends and the community. Jack’s wishes were to be cremated, so there will not be a funeral service at this time. There will be a celebration of life with close friends and family at a later date.

Hot meals and other types of assistance for seniors from the County of Inyo
I turned 60 years old last month. My birthday fell on a Sunday, and the very next day at noon I went to the Bishop Senior Center to sign up for the Senior Nutrition Program, which I now qualified for.
It is a great community service I had been looking forward to since I moved to Bishop last year. The warm meals, as you can see from the photo, are made fresh every weekday and are nutritionally balanced and meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans put together by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. That is important to me as a diabetic. Signing up for this service was easy. I just went to the reception counter at the center and identified myself as a new senior age 60 or older. I showed my driver’s license as proof of my age but I really didn’t have to. My name was immediately added to the check-in roster, and I was given a paper placemat and guided on where to line up for my meal, with milk included, and how to help myself to free lemonade, tea, coffee or water. I was also given an intake form that was easy to fill out. I could have taken it home and turned it in later in the week but I filled it out right after finishing my meal. It was that simple. The form does not ask about one’s immigration status. And, like me, one can be employed and still participate; you don’t have to be retired.
There is a suggested $5 donation per meal, but it is voluntary and no one who is 60 or older, including seniors from outside of Inyo County who are visiting or passing through, is required to pay. However, non-seniors are charged $9. About Bishop Senior Center
Located in a beautiful, quiet setting at 682 Spruce Street at the east end of Bishop City Park, Bishop Senior Center is part of the Eastern Sierra Area Agency on Aging (ESAAA) under the County of Inyo’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Department. It is a very welcoming place.
The Center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and morning activities include hanging out with other seniors while drinking coffee and watching television, reading from the center’s book collection, putting together puzzles, playing table games, or, for the musically inclined, playing the center’s upright piano.
As already stated, a hot congregate meal is served at noon sharp, but eager seniors start to line up around 10-15 minutes before. Some 50-75 meals are served at the center each day, according to Supervisor Jean Bigham. “It’s really helpful in the times we’re in right now,” she said. “With inflation being what it is, seniors’ Social Security checks don’t go a long way. This is a good place for seniors to save a few bucks.” Indeed, even though I am employed, getting hot lunches at Bishop Senior Center represents a big savings for me because of inflation. Also, there is so much variety in the menu, I don’t have to worry about where to go for lunch every day to keep from repeating meals.
Those needing transportation can have their names added to the center’s “Lunch Bunch” list. Bishop Senior Center works with Eastern Sierra Transit to do a round of pickups through Dial-A-Ride, drop the group off at the center for lunch, and come back after lunch to take them back home.
For fragile homebound seniors, there is a Home-Delivered Meals program that delivers one warm meal and four frozen meals one day a week to seniors’ homes throughout Inyo County in Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, Olancha, Keeler, Darwin, Furnace Creek and Tecopa. Currently, about 115 seniors are receiving home-delivered meals through this program, Bigham said.
Other services the center provides are discounted Eastern Sierra Transit passes; Assisted Transportation Services for seniors who need to travel as far away as Reno, Carson City, Ridgecrest or Lancaster/Palmdale for medical services; legal assistance; Family Caregiver Support Services (FCSS) for residents in both Inyo and Mono Counties; Long-Term Care Ombudsman Services for residents of long-term care facilities; home visits; and information and assistance, including Spanish interpreting through County HHS staff or a dedicated telephone line.
Bigham invites Spanish-speaking seniors to come and visit Bishop Senior Center or any of the senior meal programs at any of the other senior centers in Inyo County: Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine and Tecopa. Meal distribution days vary by location, and some centers require a reservation.
Find out more at inyocounty.us or by calling 760-873-6364. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and, until next time, let’s all continue to be “friends of our lands”!

Shoe City is in Independence 2022
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
Independence, CA—Shoe City is in Independence, and this store joins more than 35 retail stores in Southern California in offering top brands at sometimes lower prices than online shopping. Shoe City is a 30-year-old business in California, however, the Independence store has been open for three years. The business says it carries “womens, running, sandals, shape ups, mens, boots, skate, kids, boys and girls shoes.”
Amy Hawkins and Carolyn Brodsky are assistant managers at the store, and Hawkins says it’s a “very nice store,” and “we have really good brands.” Top favorites right now, Hoka and Merrell, but shoes are only a small part of the store’s appeal. Shoe City also carries socks, slippers, hats and caps, backpacks, and skateboards. From sandals to heels, from size 1 infant to men’s size 15, from skate shoes like DC and Etnies, to top-sellers like Adidas or Puma, or Ugg, the Shoe City selections are vast, and they are unloading shipments often of new merchandise. And, Hawkins adds, some of the Ugg products recently went down in price.
Hawkins joined the business to be in the area with her family, and Brodsky has been a resident in the area for many years. Hawkins says she “loves meeting new people” that are traveling through the area, and she notes that as the store becomes more popular, customers are coming back to say, “Hello.”
