ICARE, Helping Pets in Need, of the Eastern Sierra is a non-profit organization serving Inyo and Mono Counties and it provides for the welfare of animals, including helping with neutering and spaying. Eastern Sierra, CA—This year’s holiday season is shaping up to be very different from past holidays, but the special elements of Christmastime haven’t changed that much. The sharing of religious ceremonies, Christmas songs and stories, and keeping the modern holiday traditions of giving and receiving gifts continue, even though we all feel more separated from each other this year. Giving during Christmastime is symbolic of the presentation of gifts, gold,

frankincense, and myrrh, from the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus (Christian tradition). The Nativity scene is the most commonly known special presentation of the birth of Jesus. Some of the Christmas traditions, like the belief in Santa Claus, St. Nicholas or Father Christmas, or Befana (in Italy), or the Wise Men (in Spain), or Christkind (in Germany) flourish alongside older Christmastime customs. Hanukkah, sometimes called the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight days (December 11-18, 2020); and it commemorates the Jewish ideals of Judaism, and the re-dedication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by lighting candles in the menorah (a type of candelabra with eight branches) each day during the festival. There are some things which we can all give at the holidays, and that is more of ourselves to those in need. We can share the hope for a better new year, and bring happiness to others. We can help children understand the acts of charity, and the month of December is commonly the largest month for giving. Consider some of the following well-known and highly rated charities. Toys for Tots Run is run by the U.S. Marine Corp (1947), and each year they deliver millions of toys to children in need. Their goal is to have a gift for all children to open at Christmastime. Make a Wish Foundation helps children throughout the year Salvation Army Angel Tree is collaborating with Walmart this year to bring holiday cheer to children Operation Christmas Spirit assists children in military families. American Red Cross provides a variety of human services throughout the year. Ronald McDonald House Charities, which support families

take donations and help pet owners who might not be able to get their pets spayed or neutered. Wildcare Eastern Sierra helps native wildlife through a number of programs, including rehabilitation of injured or ill animals, and taking care of orphaned animals. Their goal is to return the wildlife to its home in the Eastern Sierra, and the staff also work year-round to educate residents and school children about wildlife. Wild Iris provides prevention and intervention services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or child abuse and their families. Wild Iris is available every day of every year, 24-hours a day, and they help people from all walks of life in all matter of places in their lives, including finding emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, safety planning, crisis counseling, and emergency food and clothing.

Shopping locally in 2020 may just be a small town’s salvation during these pandemic times. Support and give to our merchants, businesses, churches, charities, and those who are truly needy during these difficult times. Photos by The Hired Pen
