Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly

Spellbinder Books By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “A part of the community since 1970

Spellbinder Books' owner, Lynne Almeida and Calvin, are creating the holiday atmosphere at the last brick-and-mortar bookstore in Bishop, CA. Almeida has been the owner for 20 of the 50 years the bookstore has been open.

Bishop, CA—Are you a bibliophile? You might be if you crave a good book. Just the mere feel of a weighty novel tingles your senses...all of them. You become almost obsessive about your stacks of stories awaiting your imagination. Essentially, you might be a bibliophile if you are a book lover, and enjoy the whole experience of reading, and collecting books. You love the smell of a new book. You admire the binding and paper used to put the book together. You love the feeling of opening a new book for the first time. And, your book reading experience is real, not electronic...since no computer can imitate the feeling of real pages in your hand.

50 Years of Selling Books, and It’s Still a Page-Turner

Lynne Almeida, owner of Spellbinder Books in downtown Bishop, CA for the past 20 years, understands bibliophiles, and she has a passel of them working for her at the town's last, real brick-and-mortar bookstore. Spellbinder is celebrating its 50th year in business in 2020, and despite the e-book rage (which now has passed by the wayside, as independent bookstores reclaim the popularity of buying and reading real books), the “localists' bookstore remains a vibrant place to meet new ideas, and trade on good stories. The bookstore also has its own menagerie (different collection of items) of art, hand-made crafts, jewelry, clothing, toys, puzzles, cards, and chocolates. And, visitors, book browsers, and townsfolk meet at the Pupfish Cafe (attached but a separate business to the bookstore) to gather news, get acquainted with the small town, or just enjoy a good breakfast or lunch in the company of an excellent book. Almeida is an eclectic business woman, with ties to the Owens Valley and eastern Sierra that are rich and deep. She is witty, keeps up with internet trends through social media posts, and she is well-read. She also manages a dog-training business on the side, with faithful four-legged champions in tow. Almeida shares her enthusiasm for being an independent bookseller with a staff who also are bibliophiles, and come from every imaginable walk of life. It's this internal synergy (when the whole might be greater than the sum of its parts) which gets fired up every other day, as another shipment of books arrives at the stand-alone business. Special orders, new bestsellers, published histories of the day, and fresh children's classics are carefully enclosed in bubble-wrap, ready to meet the excited, curious, and yes, bookish people. Reading is powerful and addictive, and as any qualified bibliophile can tell you, yes, this passion for books can and does get passed on to others, especially in a bookstore. “The path that was before me The journey to owning the bookstore in Bishop, Almeida says, was much like water seeking its natural level. She laughs.

Spellbinder Books' booksellers, Adrian MuĂąoz and Courtney McElvogue, help people find their favorite titles and authors, and sometimes, a new life-time hobby.

It was “the path that was before me. Her Master’s degree in Political Philosophy: The Idea of Toleration, and working at the Stanford Bookstore for six years, didn't predict she'd send out resumes in the state, and find Donna Milovich looking for a part-time bookseller. But, that's the short story of the path. Two years after being at Spellbinder with Milovich, the bookstore was for sale, and Almeida was ready to negotiate the purchase. Since the beginning, Almeida centered her work around the community, and many fun-filled events help keep local groups and non-profits alive and valuable in the small communities. What was the Star of Bethlehem The story of the birth of Jesus and the visit by the Wisemen is deeply entrenched in our understanding of this critical event in history-the birth of the Messiah. In this short article, I will attempt to point out what we know from Scripture and scrape away some common misconceptions that have been added to the text. Who were the Wisemen and why did they arrive in Bethlehem about two months after the birth of Jesus? The Wisemen were members of a Persian Tribe called the 'Magi' from which we get word 'magic.' Much like the Tribe of Levi for the nation of Israel, the Magi functioned as the spiritual leadership Tribe in Persia and were very powerful politically. The Magi were monotheistic, believed in blood sacrifice, practiced sorcery, and were masters of astronomy. While they were not Kings themselves, they were the most important King-makers in the ancient Persian world. If you wanted to be a King in Persia you had to become a master of the wisdom, knowledge and disciplines of the Magi. Their main religion was and is called Zoroastrianism. Some of the Magi in the time of Jesus were descendants of the Magi who were trained by the Prophet Daniel while in exile in Babylon (Est. 545 BC-474 BC). These Magi practiced Zoroastrian rituals but believed in the God of Israel as the one true God being heavily influenced by Daniel's teachings. Daniel was put in charge of the Magi, called Chaldeans, by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar after his dream was accurately interpreted as described in Daniel Chapter 2 (Est. 543 BC). Daniel is again put in charge of the Magi by Persian King Darius the Mede who put Daniel in the lion's den (Chapter 6). King Darius believed in the God of Daniel and was very relieved when he found Daniel alive the next morning and feeds Daniel's accusers to the lions. Darius issues a decree to the nation of Persia to worship the God of Daniel (Est. 487 BC). In about 474 BC, 19 years before the end of the Babylonian exile in September of 455 BC, Daniel has his famous vision called the '70 Weeks Prophecy' described in Daniel Chapter 9. Each 'Week' represents seven years of time and is broken down into three parts. The First Seven weeks (49 years-7/455 BC-7/406 BC) is centered around the rebuilding of Jerusalem (Dan. 9:25) that

starts with the rebuilding of the Jerusalem Wall from mid July-September:( Elul 25Neh. 6:15) in 455 BC. The second 62 weeks, 434 years, goes from 7/406 BC to 7/29 AD. At the end of this sixtytwo week period, Daniel 9:26 states "Messiah shall be cut-off" - i.e. killed. Jesus is crucified the following Spring on Passover of 30 AD. Daniel's prophecy is very precise. What was the Star of Bethlehem The point of all these dates, taken from research in Earth's Sacred Calendar book by Jim Liles and www.thesacredcalendar.com, is that the Wisemen knew when to start searching for a sign in the sky for the coming Messiah. In October of 5 BC, during the time of the first Roman Census, Magi saw a star from their sky view in Persia, possibly near Babylon in modern day Iraq, and began preparing for a trip to Jerusalem of about 700 miles. At that same time there was a great expectation of a King to be born is Israel who would be the long awaited Messiah. This expectation and the preparation of the Magi was a direct result of the teaching of the Prophet Daniel. The Star of Bethlehem was only seen by the Magi at the time of the birth of Jesus and after they arrive in Jerusalem about two months later in December. The Magi see the Star again after meeting with Herod and the leaders in the Temple who directed the Magi to Bethlehem where Micah 5:2 says the Messiah would be born. Only the Magi saw the Star. It was not a comet or star formation that can be charted by Astronomy. The Star is called 'Astair' which can mean a blazing, shining or Shekina manifestation of the 'Glory of God'. I can speculate the what the Wisemen first saw in the East happened at the same time the Shepherd's saw and heard the Angels announce: "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" in Luke 2:11. It is important this Christmas season to remember that the first visitors to Worship Jesus were called Wisemen. This book and website, www.thesacredcalendar.com, dates Biblical events from Creation in 4115 BC to the 30 AD Crucifixion of Jesus. Questions or comments can be sent through Contact Page at website.

SPELLBINDER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Day for pets in need (low cost animal spay / neuter services, and veterinary care for injured or ill Inyo County Shelter animals) was a big success (raising more than $2500, and a total of $30,000 contributed over the past 20 years). Almeida is a board member of ICARE, and the bookstore was visited by pets and people all day. Spellbinder also holds an annual Children's Book Week, in partnership with Altrusa, with activities in the kids' section, and discounts on topshelf, children's through young adult books. The partners were able to provide more than $700 in books for gifts to Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action, Inc., IMACA's program (this year benefiting more than 150 children locally).

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Spellbinder Books includes book-loving staff, Ben Adkins and Kubo. Spellbinder Books, like so many of the small town businesses in the Eastern Sierra, provides a starting point for many of the region's young graduates, employees, entrepreneurs, prospectors, government staff, scientists, explorers, historians, and philosophers. If you can think it, you can find it in a bookstore. And, if you can't readily pick it up or find your next piece of page-turning candy, Spellbinder Books will special order it for you, and the book will come the old-fashion way, through the mail...it's like Christmas every day.

Spellbinder Books' children's section is filled with classics and crafts, and it's the liveliest spot in the bookstore in Bishop, CA. Photos by The Hired Pen

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Your Thinking Makes it So Rev. Johnnie Coleman declared, “I am the thinker that thought the thoughts that made the things.” Ernest Holmes said, “Thoughts are things.” Both of these statements are applicable to each and every one of us. While looking at the Creation story in Genesis, we can see where God spoke into Chaos, and out of nothing created everything, and later, in that first chapter he said, “Let us make man in our own image and after our likeness--- that he should have dominion of the earth.” In other words, we have the same nature of God. We can speak our word, out of which, creates our experience, both in form, circumstance or situation. The New Thought Movement has been around for a little more than a hundred and fifty years. Essentially the power of the individual to control his health and well-being is not controlled from outside, but from within. We do not worship a far off deity or place one man above the others. We recognize and appreciate what others may call Saviors, Messiahs scholars, philosophers that have contributed to our body of knowledge and provided way showing benefit, however; we cannot escape the conclusion that our life experience and future experience is entirely dependent on the thoughts we think and the words we utter. It is a big responsibility, but entirely worth it. This may sound like we reject other faiths or their message. That is not true. Personally, I love Jesus, and I love what he reportedly said, however; I don’t necessarily love everything that was said about him. Jesus empowered each individual when he said, “It is done unto you as you believe.” With that statement he told us how our belief is playing itself out in our life. This is where Religious Science differs from many of the God dependent organizations. The Bible tells us that God created a perfect place called Eden, and it flourished as long as the created abided with the Creator in harmony, but when human emotions were stirred up, man was expelled. Suddenly, man had to make his own path, depending not so much as God, but on his own. Actually, it is a story of how man can bring his life into order, by the power of his own decisions. When Ernest Holmes founded Religious Science, he said, “I want Religious Science to be open at the top. “ New writers, thinkers, ministers and lecturers can come up with new revelations and insights, which will add to our pool of wisdom. Individuals can apply the Truths to their life and have unique experiences based on their consciousness. When we look around and behold undesirable situations, circumstances and incidents in our life, we know we can change it by changing the belief that brought them into our life, in the first place. It is, by no means as easy as pie, but it is definitely doable. Remember the words of Rev. Johnnie Coleman, “I am the thinker that thought the thoughts that made the things.” Say it aloud and know it is you. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
