The Christmas Tree Hunt 2021

Christmas tree tips before the holiday shopping trips

Eastern Sierra, CA—Iconic in shape and meaning, there’s nothing that says holiday season like a Christmas tree, or snow-covered trees resembling Christmas trees. A trip around the neighborhoods in the eastern Sierra will reveal an astonishing number of species of pines and firs, with grand Sequoias gracing many of the older, established communities, like Independence, and Bishop, CA. The holiday season also brings many of these coniferous, and evergreens to our local nurseries and in Bishop, CA, Ace High Country Lumber’s tree lot donates tree sale proceeds to the Sierra Roller Hockey League. Newly arrived cut Christmas trees join live, container evergreens in the nursery area at High Country Lumber, and you’ll find every shape and kind of Christmas tree you’d be decorating. There are also a large selection of live pines, including the Dwarf Alberta Spruce, which makes a great year-round ornamental, in a container, and later can become a smaller Christmas tree in your yard. High Country Lumber also carries pinyon pines, and Arborvitaes, which are another coniferous, pyramidally shaped tree. Wreaths in a variety of sizes, and holiday ornaments round out a nice visit to the High Country Lumber tree lot. Christmas Garden Alert: Ace High Country Lumber will be getting the ever-popular Poinsettia, Christmas cactus, Amaryllis, and other flowering bulbs, on Friday, December 3. And Santa Claus makes an appearance for photos on Saturday, December 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The City of Bishop lits its Christmas Tree at dark in the City Park, following the “White Christmas” parade down Main Street starting at 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 4. Then the Street of Lights begins, and businesses in and around Bishop will welcome holiday visitors and customers with songs, bon fires, and holiday treats. O Christmas Tree Christmas trees are coniferous trees (these trees have needles instead of leaves; they remain green in the fall, and they have cones instead of flowers for seed dispersal), and these trees usually grown in forests of firs, pine and spruce. Christmas trees in America by popularity: Fraser fir #1; Douglas fir #2; Balsam fir #3; Blue Spruce #4, and for the eastern Sierra, the pinyon pine. The top-rated Christmas trees are known for needle retention, the smell, stiff branches (to hold heavier ornaments), and natural shape. Pine Tree ID: If the twig bears needles in bunches, groups of two, three, or five, chances are its a pine. If its twig has needles carried singly, you are looking at a fir or spruce. A needle test: take a needle and roll it between your thumb and index finger, roll it around, and if it feels flat, it’s a fir.

In search of the Christmas tree this year? Look at the Christmas Holiday décor includes the traditional evergreen wreaths, with all the tree lot at Ace High Country Lumber in Bishop, CA. And, then there’s the pinyon pine Christmas tree, with its blue needles, unique scent, and it’s indigenous to the Great Basin region. A member of the pine family, this “living Christmas tree” planted will bear edible nuts (seeds); named after the Spanish word for pine nut, piñón, and this pine tree is from the species: pinus edulis. A water-wise pine, it’s not a fast growing pine, but the tough little pine can live up to 600 years! Pinyon pine trees can be individually cut by purchasing a Christmas tree permit from the US Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management. There are regions for Christmas tree cutting, and the majority of the pines available are pinyon.
