The Center of It All

Holiday music and good cheer return with the Bill Schuck Quartet

Bishop, CA—A special holiday music con cert is happening again, with the return of the Bill Schuck Quartet, Monday, De cember 12, at 7 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church’s Sanctuary, Bishop, CA. The tickets are $18, and can be pur chased at the door the day of the concert, or by calling the church office (760-8727701). The concert proceeds benefit Bish op’s United Methodist Church’s Social Services (United Methodist Social Ser vices is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2001) fund, and sponsors these ser vices throughout the year to “address the expressed temporal needs and concerns of the people that are not adequately met through existing structures.”

The important outreach programs in clude the soup kitchen serving hot lunches (Mondays-Wednesdays-Fri days); providing hot showers; providing a mini-food pantry to those in need at the church everyday, and contributing to the Psalm 8 Project; that promotes zero-waste by helping worms process kitchen waste and cardboard into a valu able soil amendment called vermicast. Workshops are planned for partners in this project, and Schuck credits former pastor Caddy Jackson for helping for mulate a way to grow your own food, and provide soil nutrients locally to the com munities.

The Music is at the Center of It All The setting for the holiday music is ap ropos, and the First United Method ist Church has been called the “Music Church,” known for the tradition of organ, piano, choir, hand bells, and the church’s connection / proximity to the

schools in Bishop. This year’s musical concert is arranged in a semi-circle of church pews, and the music is at the center of it all.

Holiday and jazz favorites, with Sandy Anderson, are a part of the quartet’s sets, with Hadi al Sadoon on trumpet and flugelhorn, Orion Boucher on the double bass / electric bass, Ryan Mills on the drums, and Bill Schuck playing the piano. It’s been almost two years since the last music concert, Schuck explains, due to the pandemic, and the musicians are looking forward to visiting the holiday spirit by sharing their music with the community again.

Schuck invites well-known vocalist, Sandy Anderson (founder / vocalist of the long-time favorite band, since 1971, Sandy and the High Country), to join in the festivities, and she’s singing one of Schuck’s original arrangements of Gustav Holst and Christina Rossetti’s, “In the Bleak Midwinter” (2014). Schuck notes that Anderson performed in the music series, “In Harmony,” (in conjunction with the Eastern Sierra Land Trust) but the series was cancelled due to the pandemic. Colleen Bulgarelli retires from AltaOne Federal Credit Union, after 40 years of service

Bulgarelli started her career as a teller at the China Lake Base Branch in 1982. After progressing through the ranks and moving to Lake Isabella, she ends her career managing the two Kern River Valley branch locations. “Colleen has shown exceptional leadership and leaves a legacy of service to her team and community. She will definitely be missed.”, said Stephanie Sievers, Al taOne CEO.

Bulgarelli stated, “I met my husband David while working at the credit union and the credit union played a part in the raising of my kids! Back then work/life balance wasn’t something considered, but the credit union allowed me to work part time for many years so I could spend more time with my children. I feel this enabled us to give them a great foundation, which shows in their lives now.” Bul garelli’s children have grown up to be medical professionals— daughter Jamy is an OBGYN and son Cody is a Physician Assistant. Looking back Bulgarelli said some of her mentors included Donna Hollingsworth and Marie Riggs. “Donna showed me how to build a high performing team and to lead with compassion and empathy. Marie offered life advice. She told me when I was hired to start preparing for retirement now, which I did by adjusting my 401k deductions regularly and investing for the future, ensuring we were set to enjoy retirement.”

Among the things Bulgarelli will miss about the credit union are the members, team, and serving the community. “I plan to continue serving the community, but in a different capacity.” Bulgarelli said. “I have always believed in the credit union’s culture, it’s what’s kept me here. We truly care about our members and communities and work to make them better.” added Bulgarelli.
