Winter Safety Tips 2021
Winter has arrived again: what is your snow readiness? • Carry a shovel and flashlight in your vehicle. • Carry food, water, sheltering / blankets in your vehicle. • Do not run your vehicle's heater without proper ventilation. • Do not get buried under snow and run your vehicle's heater. • Turn around before you get buried in the deep snow. Your life could depend on it. • Stay with a partner at all times. If alone, stay put. Wait for help, until the storm passes.
• If you fall in deep snow, avoid tree wells, and try to slide feet first. • Let people know what your travel plans are, and stick to them. If in trouble, send out word, immediately! READ or WATCH WEATHER ALERTS before leaving your home. It's simple, and free on the radio locally. If it says, “Don't drive if you don't have to.” Don't drive if you don't have to. Save a rescue. Save an emergency responder for more important, life-saving work. Thank you.
Carry chains, a shovel, food, water, blankets, and provisions if you are traveling in the mountains in winter. These simple things can mean the difference between life and death situations in the Sierra Nevada during a winter storm. Pay attention to the weather forecasts, and avoid travel if not absolutely necessary. Photos by The Hired Pen Heavy snowfall caught a lot of travelers and snow play and skiing visitors off guard this past week, as they tried to make their way up and down US Highway 395, Highway 6, and Highway 95 in Nevada. Pictured is the snowy roadway outside of Lone Pine, CA on January 28, 2021. Many highway delays occurred during the three days of snow storms (January 26-29, 2021).
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen USA—Winter has finally caught up with us in the Eastern Sierra, with heavy snowfall the past week. Parts of the Eastern Sierra received feet of snow, instead of the inches predicted, so travel was treacherous and tricky to navigate. Travelers and residents encountered a mixture of blizzard conditions, snow, ice, rain, mudslides, and road way closures, from January 27 – January 29, as counties worked out multiple weather-related incidents. Locally, US Highway 395 was reported to be challenging driving, with multiple hazards, including heavy rain, snow and sleet, and then heavy snow, into neighboring Nevada and Arizona. Some of the travelers up and down US 395 appeared to be caught off guard by the large amounts of snow, and restrictions which were put in place for public safety. Some visitors re-
ported sitting in their vehicles all day on January 28, only to be turned back around due to hazardous conditions up by Mammoth Lakes, CA. The town of Mammoth received more than seven feet of snow, and Mammoth Mountain reported nearly 10 feet on the upper elevations. Unfortunately, two deaths are attributed to the recent storms: Mammoth Mountain Ski Area reported a death in the deep snow, and another death was associated with suffocation in the snow in town as well.
RoundValley, north of Bishop, CA, received more than 10 inches of snow in the recent storms which blasted the Eastern Sierra January 26-29, 2021.

Tribute to Veterans in 2020
Winter Safety Reminders: Prepare Before You Visit No matter what your level of winter experience is: • Be prepared to live in your vehicle for a day, at least, in winter weather in the mountains. • Know how to put on chains on your vehicle. Practice ahead of time. • Carry chains in your vehicle.
Bishop, CA—The Bishop Twin Theatre recently saluted Veterans who have passed away, in a beautiful hometown, Main Street tribute. The Bishop Twin Theatre, while not open each week during the pandemic for movies, has created beautiful marquees to help the passersby remember our year in Bishop. Photo by The Sierra Reader

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
How To Use It We have come to the last of the four chapters at the beginning of The Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes. The Thing Itself, The Way it Works and What It Does constitute those first three chapters, and now we will look to the forth, How to Use It. We have identified a creative energy that has propelled everything around, about and within us. We can call this energy or force God, The Thing, It or Infinite Intelligence, love or Law. It matters little what it is called, It goes on from the very beginning to the last hurrah, working for you by working through you. Love rules through Law and as we abide with the Law we receive that Love in the form of happiness and well-being. That God and each of us exist is undeniable. There is only One Power and that is the Power of God individualized within each one. Many theologians are still teaching the idea of a God and a devil, each with an equal power to impose upon man a blessing or a curse, and men have worshipped a devil just as truly as they have worshipped God. Even to this day this monstrous thought is robbing man of their birthright of health and happiness. There is no evil power in the Universe or damnation to those that will not fall down and worship a god of lack, loss and limitation This life that we have is for living. The Science of Mind is all about living and living well. Jesus said, “Follow me, let the dead bury the dead.â€? Let us not debate the issue of heaven or hell, which are attitudes of mind, not eternal destinations. God is making by personal appearance by means of you. We have the power and ability, through God, to make our life and experience a true delight. Let us use that ability and power to enhance our lives and those we love. Let us now get into How to Use It. Holmes wrote, “It has been proved that thinking correctly and by a conscious mental use of the law of Mind, we can cause It to do definite things for us, through us. By conscious thinking, we give conscious direction to It, and It, consciously or unconsciously responds to our advance along the line of our conscious, or subjective, direction.â€? This is the introduction to Treatment, or as some has called it, scientific prayer. As we have shown the power of our thought processes, we should begin to more adequately control our thoughts. Our thought should tend more and more toward the positive and uplifting, and above all else toward a real unity with Spirit that is already complete and perfect. The trend of our thought toward the affirmative is causation to the appearance of what you are thinking about. Holmes says, “Thoughts are things.â€? If God acts on one thought, it follows that God acts on all thoughts. Treatment is a series of affirmative statements providing a medium for that which you desire, Treatment is not a supplication to God. God has already given to us all that we need. We must accept the gift of Goodness, Truth and Beauty, though we have wrongfully perceived it as missing. There are steps to be included in a treatment. Each step builds upon the others towards completion, but a grateful heart doeth good like a medicine. We have classes at the church where we teach treatment. Because of the limitations of space I cannot go into detail at this time, but I include a treatment Ernest Holmes included in this lesson. “This treatment is for a man who wishes to demonstrate the supremacy of spiritual thought force over apparent material resistance.â€? “I am the center in the Divine Mind, a point of God conscious life, truth and action. My affairs are divinely guided and guarded into right action, into correct results. Everything I do, say or think, is stimulated by the Truth. There is a power in this word I speak, because it is of the Truth and it is the Truth. There is perfect and continuous right action in my life and my affairs. All belief in wrong action is dispelled and made negative. Right action alone has power and Right Action is power and the Power is God‌the Living Spirit Almighty. The Spirit animates everything that I do, say or think. Ideas come to me daily and these ideas are divine ideas. They direct me and sustain me without effort. I am continuously directed. I am compelled to do the right thing at the right time, to, say the right word at the right time, to follow the right course at all times. All suggestion of age, poverty, limitation or unhappiness is uprooted from my mind and cannot gain entrance to my thought. I am happy, well and filled with perfect life. I live in the Spirit of Truth and am the consciousness that the Spirit of Truth lives in me. My word is the law unto its own manifestation and will bring to me or cause me to be brought to Its fulfillment. There is no unbelief, no doubt, no uncertainty. I know and I know that I know. Let every thought of doubt vanish from my mind that I may know the Truth and the Truth may make me free.â€? God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Rescued injured Kit Fox released
The injured Kit Fox who was rescued more than 2 months ago, was released Tuesday, Jan. 26. Wildcare director Cindy Kamler, with volunteers Jennifer Garrison and Ella Boehme, drove the recovered animal to the area where she had been found. She traveled quietly in her special cloth carrier. Not far from the road where the kit fox had been struck by a vehicle, a safe release spot was found. It was far enough from the road and away from any human structures or activities. The rolling lava hills were thickly covered with creosote and other desert plants and grasses. As the sunset painted the western skyline, the near-full moon rose on the east. Jen and Ella placed the carrier facing a good hiding place in the creosote thicket and the door flap was unzipped. We moved away quietly to a spot a discreet distance away. After a small pause, the small fox left the carrier and slowly began to move across the immediate landscape. She appeared calm, looking around keenly and happily inhaling the familiar smells. She traced ever-larger circles, steadily moving away from the release site. Almost out of sight, she quietly lay down behind a thicket. Her color and markings served well as camouflage, and her form became almost invisible. Only her dark eyes and black tail tip could be spotted. If we hadn’t known she was there, she would have be invisible. We stood quietly, soaking in the calm as this beautiful wild animal merged once more, safe and well, into her environment.
