Early Trout Opener 2020 Lone Pine’s trout derby is chance to catch a trout early By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Lone Pine, CA—Attention anglers! Lone Pine's Early Opener Trout Derby is the area's first glimpse of fishing in the Sierra, and it draws hundreds of anglers from around the area, especially kids and families, says Kathleen New, Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce President. Inyo County and the businesses of Lone Pine join in the effort to make this derby possible. Anglers fish at Diaz Lake, south of Lone Pine, on March 7, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and New says, “Boats are allowed that day. Competitors win prizes, and there is an award for the biggest fish that day. New says the Early Opener Trout Derby will also have chances for kids to learn how to fish. “Everybody is a part of this, New adds. There were 120 people registering last year, and more than 350 people participated in the event New notes.

Trout Derby: Reeling in Fun Since 1957 The Lone Pine Trout Derby has been a staple of the community since 1957, New explains, and its inspiration / founder, Bruce Ivey, was also a part of the downtown Lone Pine businesses (with NAPA Auto Parts) involved with the Chamber of Commerce. Families and children are a focus of this early fishing event, and it's a chance for anglers to test out their new gear early too.

Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce— A Town Anchor Since 1944 New, the Chamber of Commerce businesses, and Inyo County help make this fishing experience possible, and the downtown merchants, restaurants, and shops, along with numerous

camping opportunities nearby, create a festive atmosphere. New, who has been the Chamber of Commerce President for 18 years, notes there are 200 members of the Chamber, with new businesses, like Big Willy, a mountain sports and apparel shop gearing up people for mountaineering, and EZ Kampin', which rents tear-drop trailers to visitors, who also make the fishing event a stand-out for residents and visitors alike.

Diaz Lake Early in the morning of March 26, 1872, a massive earthquake hit the region, but Lone Pine, with its largely adobe buildings, suffered mightily. A twelve-mile crack opened up near the town, and the ground shifted, creating a lake where the Diaz brothers had cattle grazing. Today, Diaz Lake, just a few miles south of Lone Pine, is an Inyo County operated campground, but cattle still graze near the lake. Open year-round, Diaz Lake is also famous for its early fishing opener in March. Diaz Lake SEE OPENER ON PAGE 5

Topah Spoonhunter appointed to NIHD Board of Directors Topah Spoonhunter, the Director of the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation, has earned appointment to the Northern Inyo Healthcare District Board of Directors, representing the residents of southeast Bishop, Wilkerson, Big Pine, and Aberdeen. Spoonhunter took the oath of office during the Jan. 15 NIHD Board of Directors meeting. Chosen from among several applicants, he fills the board vacancy left by the December departure of veteran Director MC Hubbard. A resident of Big Pine, Spoonhunter will serve NIHD’s Zone V through this November. At that time, he will have the opportunity to stand for election to complete the remaining two years of Hubbard’s term. If he chooses to do so and wins, Spoonhunter will serve until November 2022. At that time, he may then run for election to a full four-year term on the Healthcare District’s Board. “I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to be a part of something as important as the Northern Inyo Healthcare District,” Spoonhunter said. “I know the NIHD Board and NIHD staff have already done some great things and are on their way to doing even more, so I just hope that my knowledge and experience will be able to help in some way.” Spoonhunter brings a wide array of experience in business, government, and social workings to the NIHD Board. “It is because of these experiences that I have seen governments, organizations, and communities on various levels and through different lenses,” Spoonhunter said. “I have seen the challenges that we face, but I have also seen the opportunities to make a difference.” An enrolled member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe, Spoonhunter was born in Bishop and raised on the Big Pine Paiute Reservation. He attended Big Pine Elementary School

Registration, weigh-in, and awards ceremony will be at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds in downtown Bishop. Fishing locations include Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens River. California Department of Fish and Wildlife plants Rainbow Trout year-round in these locations and the Bishop Chamber will arrange for supplemental stockings of fish purchased from Wright’s Rainbows prior to the derby. “We want to make sure there are plenty of fish for everyone,” explains April Leeson, Event Coordinator at the Bishop Chamber of Commerce. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

The Spirit of Opulence It is peculiar that most people think of the amount of money somebody has to define how opulent they are, but money is only one means of opulence. Also peculiar is how many religious cultures disdain opulence as a virtue. They say that money is the root of evil, while it is really the love of money, which is greed and selfishness that taint the consciousness, and lead to self-destruction. Contrary to their selfdeprivation doctrine, poverty is not needed or rewarded. We were created, birthed or what ever you want to call it, to be opulent. We are here to reap all that the Universe has for us. God has the abundance of everything, and it is all available to us, if we will only believe. Lest you look at God as limited try counting the leaves on a tree, the grains of sand on a beach, or the number of rain drops in a single rain storm. There is abundance al around us everyday. Unfortunately, some of these false teachings have led many down the path that they think it would take divine intervention, such as a miracle, a lottery win, or winning the Publishers Clearing House in order to experience opulence, when the truth is opulence is not dependent on your bank account or your stock options. We must remember that opulence is not all about money or how much cash you have on hand‌ Many years ago, while I was living on the south side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, my roadway to the Huntington Park Church where I was an associate minister, took me through a very impoverished section, of Los Angeles, known as Watts. Many of the homes reflected the impoverished condition of its residents, but there were some homes that reflected something far beyond the others. These people demonstrated opulence. They cared, and used what they had to improve their life style. They had flower beds, painted porches and you could tell, the love for their home. Opulence is not about getting more stuff. Opulence is about giving of your whole being to life. The Bible says, “Give and it shall be giving unto you, heaped up, shaken together and running over. Again, we are not restricting this to money. You can begin experiencing your opulence regardless of the amount in your bank account or income. To determine how wealthy we are in order to share our wealth, we cannot make ourselves dependent on any particular form of wealth, because we then shut out other forms of wealth. Perhaps, you never considered your ability to smile as a form of wealth, but smile from you to another can lift them from depression or sadness faster than a prescription drug. A helping hand from you can make the difference in countless ventures. Giving of yourself is a benefit for countless endeavors. Whether in the physical body or the entire solar system; circulation is absolutely essential to the continued flow of the spirit of life. The Law of Circulation has been stated in many ways, such as, karma, what goes around, comes around or a reciprocal action. The spirit of opulence is no exception to this Universal law. God is not stingy. There is more than enough for everybody. You are already wealthy, but if your wealth is centered on self-deprivation, God will not deprive you of your expectation. Once you realize the spirit of opulence you cannot help but draw to yourself material good, emotional good, and a knowledge that you are a part of the solution to the world’s need for love. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
