4-H Stands for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health 2022 “4-H is a community for all”

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

“We believe in young people and their strengths and influence to improve the world around us”-4-H Organization Eastern Sierra, CA—With the beliefs in all young people’s potential, developing life-long skills, positive youth development, and cultivating positive relationships with young people through caring and trusting mentors, the 4-H clubs

across America are the largest youth development organization (six million members) in the country. “4-H is delivered by the Cooperative Extension, a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. For more than 100 years, 4-H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better.” (Source: 4-H.org) 4-H: Grounded in Hands On A central theme in 4-H clubs across the country is the belief that kids learn best by doing, through hands on learning, and meeting kids wherever they are. The 4-H themes resonate with a history in doing larger service for our lifetimes. “4-H is community for all.” The “core pillars” are agriculture, civic engagement, healthy living, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Fundraisers, like the 3rd Annual Green and White 4-H Event at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, help sustain all of the year-round activities that 4-H members are a part of, including the annual Livestock Show at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. Photos by The Hired Pen

4-H is not just raising animals or agriculture, or any one endeavor. 4-H has 1.8 million urban members; 1.6 million suburban members, and 2.6 million rural club members. 4-H programs focus on STEM projects, highlighting technology, computer science, robotics, plant and animal science, veterinary science, forestry, and raising and training animals. 4-H members can also attend a National 4-H Youth Summit on Agri-Science, for high school students interested in knowledge about agriculture, food security, and sustainability. Deadline for the Registration is February 15, 2022.

Locally, the Eastern Sierra (Inyo and Mono Counties) has four clubs: Sierra Crest (Bishop area), Mt. Tom (Bishop area), Bristlecone (Bishop area), and Lone Pine. Young people chose their clubs based on which one is closest to them, does the club meet at convenient times for you, and are there friends or family members or leaders in a local club? There are about 50 volunteers who help direct projects and programs, including Callie Peek, who is the 4-H Program Representative. The 4-H Programs, through the Cooperative Extension, are headed up by Farm Advisor: Dustin Blakey. The Farm Office is located at 207 W. South Street, Bishop, CA. 760-873-7854

Bizarre101 Art Gallery Opening Highway 95 Walker Lake Nevada 2/12/22 -11AM-4PM

David and Maryknoll Bowen celebrate the Grand Opening of Bizarre 101. The Gallery features the creative works of local artists to include Graphic Design, Metal Art, Ceramics, Paintings, Watercolor, Textiles, Florals, Collections and Jewelry. Bizarre 101, as home and gallery, is full of art inside and out. The building is painted in an Indian geometric motif. David Bowen has adorned the building with his “Winged Bighorn” symbolizing local nature. Shelley Hartman’s mural features the legendary “Cecil the Serpent”. Nigel Giddings created “Robot Bob” and Jan Henry’s Ford Model A is a vintage collector’s delight! Thanks to the Walker Lake Neighbor’s donations of recycled furniture, displays, materials, equipment, labor and support., the building stands as a tribute to their generosity. David and Maryknoll have lived very full lives. David has been devoted to art since he was 10. His work in Commercial Design and Graphic Art is now available in Walker Lake. Maryknoll had a successful career as an entrepreneur and corporate executive. They have both owned and run other businesses alone and together. Please join us Saturday February 12th for the grand opening and ribbon cutting to support the gallery and local artists of Mineral County. Bizarre 101 is located on the west side of Highway 95, between the Baptist Church and Big Horn Crossing. by Mary Marinello

Linda Gail Ellis (Swan)

was born September 11, 1948 to Vern and Flora Swan at Miss Freise’s Maternity Hospital in Bakersfield, California. She was welcomed by her brothers Gary and Darryl Allbee. As a child, Linda romped around the rural area with siblings, friends and her large extended family that included numerous cousins. It was a time when life was simple and carefree. At the age of 6, Linda and a close friend went to work with her friend’s father at a new park being constructed in Anaheim. The father worked for a man named Walt. At that time, the area was still mostly orange groves as far as the eye could see. After playing in the fields, the girls were asked to give their childish opinions of a ride that was being worked on for the park. The ride would later be called the Jungle Cruise when the Disneyland Park opened the following year in 1955. At 18, while Linda was attending a golf class in college, she was literally struck by love when she was struck by a wayward golf ball that was hit by a handsome young man she would later marry; James E. Ellis. Jim always claimed he was aiming for the blonde standing next to her, but admits it was the greatest golf shot he has ever made. In 1967 Jim and Linda married and moved to Lone Pine, California, where they began raising their three children; James, Rick and Debbie. Linda was a loving and devoted mother and wife, and her children were the fuel that drove her. While a young mother of 3 in 1972, Linda experienced the loss of her own mother to lung cancer. Before her passing, Linda’s In-Laws promised Flora that they would love, care for and protect her daughter as if she were their own; a promise Jim and Juanita Ellis each kept until their own passings in 2016 and 2020. Linda was an avid craftsman: she was creative, driven and loved making things with her hands. This quickly turned into a love of sharing her creations as gifts. Anything from a hand-sewn wall hanging to stained glass terrariums and ornaments, crocheted slippers and blankets to wooden nightstands and hope chests were churned out of Linda’s shop and given as gifts year after year. There was no limit to what she could create, and she thrived on the challenge to do something bigger and better each time. Jim Ellis Sr. often publicly praised Linda as the most capable person he knew, and she could often be found by his side in his wood working shop learning the trade. Although she dabbled in a variety of mediums, her true passion was fabric. Through the years she sewed numerous items, from casual dresses to prom dresses, wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses and flower girl dresses. Her favorite dress was a simple A-frame tea length white chiffon dress that she made for herself for her wedding day. Her love of sewing clothes transitioned easily into quilts; for which she was well known for in the surrounding area. Her beautifully crafted pieces could be admired every year at the annual fair, along with a homemade pie; lemon meringue was what she was known for. Through the years Jim and Linda made their way up the beautiful Owens Valley to Bishop, making many lifelong friends along the way. Bishop is where she truly called home, where they lived most of their years together raising their family that grew to include 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild, with another on the way. After retiring with her husband from the Department of Water and Power in 2012—where Linda worked as a secretary—they packed their bags and hit the road. Linda could always be found sewing in the recreational room at the RV Park in Pismo California where they spent several weeks a year enjoying the beach, the golf courses and meeting new people while traveling in HER motorhome. There wasn’t a fabric store within 1,000 miles she hadn’t been to, and there wasn’t a town she visited where she didn’t befriend someone. She touched so many people along her life’s journey, even at the very end, where in the last weeks of her life she befriended another beautiful soul in the hospital. Linda and Helen could be found sitting side by side holding hands watching old black and white movies and testing each other’s knowledge by naming the actors from their pasts. She never lost her spirit to touch others’ lives. Linda passed away from her battle with brain cancer and breast cancer on January 25, 2022, peacefully in her home in Sparks Nevada, literally surrounded by family in a room full of blow-up beds and sleeping bags. Linda was devoted to life; her candle burned brightly, and she spent her 73 years doing the things she loved, being with those she loved and caring for all in her life. Linda is survived by her husband Jim, her three children; Jim Ellis (Cami) of Bishop, Rick Ellis (Alix) of Ely Nevada, Debbie Wethern (Jason) of Reno Nevada, her brother Darryl Allbee and numerous cousins and her beloved grandchildren and great grandchild. She will be truly missed by her family and all those whose lives she touched with her generous and giving spirit. Services will be held February 26, 2022, 11:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church 849 Home St. Bishop, CA. Graveside services at E. Line Cemetery to follow.

LAWS RAILROAD MUSEUM & HISTORICAL SITE HONORS WOMEN IN RAILROAD HISTORY ON MARCH 5, 2022

CONNIE DURHAM REALTOR ®

Laws Railroad Museum & Historical Site is honoring women in American Railroad History on Saturday March 5th during the Museum’s regular hours 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Beginning in the early 1830’s, railroads began the boisterous process of re-routing the course of American history, world history, politics, and individual lives. Most of the physical labor of grading track, laying rails, and blasting tunnels for the longer rail lines was done by immigrant labor, and certainly not by women. Indeed, one popular magazine of the 1860’s suggested that since women were unsuited for such physical labor, their efforts to acquire voting rights were absurd. Somehow the author equated the physical capacity to build railroads with the ability to understand politics. For the most part, the first women to work for the railroads beginning in 1856 operated telegraph equipment. They were required to be literate, and to learn Morse code. Some went to school to learn the job; most learned from other operators. Despite public resistance to women working in these positions, the outbreak of the Civil War meant fewer men available for the jobs, and more women in the telegraph offices. The late 1800’s and early 1900’s saw many changes in the roles of women in railroad history. Despite the fact that they still couldn’t vote, women scientists and civil engineers designed comfort and safety features for railroads across the country. Since for most of this time period, most States did not allow women to take out pat-

ents or profit from their inventions, many women inventors took out patents in the names of male relatives. Nevertheless, history gives us several women whose inventions were given patents in their names. In 1920 civil engineer Olive Dennis was hired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. She had a distinguished career there, including her work designing the first luxury train serving the Nation’s capital and the first in service after World War II. Eliza Murfey, a physician, became concerned about the morbidity and mortality from train derailments. She designed mechanisms to improve lubrication of axles to prevent derailments caused by seized axles and bearings. These and a half-dozen other women in railroad history, including railroad president Sarah Kidder, will be telling their stories through Laws volunteer docents on March 5th. The museum’s gift shop will feature items recognizing the role of women in this era during which women struggled to obtain the right to vote, while striving for equality in educational and occupational opportunity. Masks are still required so grab your favorite one and join us for this special event. Event programs will be available in the gift shop. ###
