They must be felt with the heartâ&#x20AC;?--Helen Keller Eastern Sierra, CAâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; Valentine's Day, February 14, is a day to show your affection to family, friends, and spouses / partners, and it's a celebration of romance for many. But, sharing your passion doesn't have to be reserved for just one person, and the entire family can get together to spend an afternoon, or evening doing thoughtful things for one another or having fun with each other on a family outing. How do I say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love youâ&#x20AC;?? Let me count the ways 1. Nu Besha supeeta = I love you in Paiute 2. Nu Soopeda U = I love you in Northern Paiute

Spending time with family, expressing gratitude, and creating memories are sometimes the best gifts we can give any family member, or someone who is without their family (like a widow, veteran, or homebound individual). If the weather permits, take a stroll around town, bring a picnic lunch to the park, or make some homemade Valentines and deliver them to your neighbors and friends. When the weather makes getting outside difficult, think about making heartshaped everything, from cookies to pizzas, and set up a craft table for the family to create their own Valentine's Day cards. Take the family bowling or have a date night for everyone, and dress up, then go to a fancy restaurant together. Plan out a spring garden, then give each family member a packet of seeds in their Valentine's Day card.

Yes, he was a part of the rugged landscape, from the git. Yes, he put the next generation of thinking, pondering, and getting down to it, that we all learned so much from seeing. Yes, we witnessed ingenuity, tenacity, and forthrightness, in its elements. Dave McCoy treasured these landscapes, in many, and gave to countless generations of mountain people, children, animals, and ideas. He is our quintessential Thomas Edison, Andrew Carnegie, Snowshoe Thompson of Mammoth, Walt Disney, and Mark Twain. It will be impossible, on the steep slopes of the Eastside, to replace such a person. A visionary, in all senses of the word. And, he gifted us, with his enduring love of the Eastside, by sharing his love of these mountains with endless acts of charity, which befitted the man of the mountains, and all of his ways of living. Dave McCoy lived a deep and hugely full life here (August 24, 1915-February 8, 2020). He is the creator of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (1955-2005), and some would argue, the builder of the Town of Mammoth Lakes, if not figuratively, then literally. He saw something on the far side of California, geographically remote by anyone's standards, and Dave had the follow-through, to physically wrassle and wrangle a notion into being. Amazing. And not unlike putting a man on the moon. He was an engineer in his ingenuity, and put his knowledge into motion. Garnered the respect and sweat equity of his colleagues, and did something uncommon with his gifts. He shared them, and gave the next kids' generation a taste of what it was like to be in the mountains.
