Serving the communities of Inyo and Mono Counties IMACA and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints team up for local food programs
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
“We are people helping people”--IMACA Eastern Sierra, CA—The Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action (IMACA) and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently unloaded a third semi-truck and trailer load of food for distribution to the IMACA food programs. The third in a series of food donations made since the pandemic began, the regional non-profit, IMA-
Standing beside a large semi-truck trailer load of donated food from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is local Bishop Tom Paulson, and two of the church’s Elders (top) Elder Hicks, from Layton, Utah, and (bottom) Elder Larson, from Clifton, Idaho. The food was donated / delivered from the Latter-day Saints’ farms and other businesses in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the eastern Sierra’s Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action (IMACA) food distribution program for the those families in need in Inyo, Mono and Alpine Counties.

CA, warehoused meat, beans, flour, chili con carne, ground beef, and other important food items which were delivered by freight to IMACA’s warehouse in Bishop, CA. “Whether you’re struggling to find affordable child care or need emergency shelter, we’re here to support you”--IMACA Food distribution is a big part of IMACA’s presence in Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties, in the eastern Sierra region of California. Jeanne Thomas, IMACA’s Food Program and Volunteer Manager, greeted the large trailer full of food from Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City is the founding city of the Latter-day Saints’ church and businesses, and the food donated came directly from the farms and other Latter-day Saints’ volunteer and food donation programs. Bishop Tom Paulson, with the Bishop, CA branch of the Latter-day Saints, was on hand when the IMACA warehouse staff helped two elders, Elder Hicks and Elder Larson, unload the large trailer load of frozen meats, canned goods, and dry food products. Bishop Paulson said this was the third truck load, and two food donations were made last year, due to Covid, and a larger number of people in need; and the church in Salt Lake City takes some custom orders from IMACA, based on our local needs. Thomas, who handles all of the food distribution throughout the region for IMACA, said all 15 sites would receive regularly scheduled food and IMACA’s volunteer program goes hand-in-hand with these monthly community visits. Thomas drives refrigerated / frozen food trucks to Walker, Bridgeport, Lee Vining, June Lake, Mammoth Lakes, Benton, Crowley Lake, Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, Keeler, Darwin, Tecopa, and Charles-

ton View (on the Nevada border of southern Inyo County) each month. Bishop’s food distribution includes about 30 families, Lee Vining offers food to 30 to 50 people, and Mammoth serves about 45 families. According to the IMACA website, “10,784 people avoided hunger” with IMACA’s food distribution programs throughout the year. IMACA’s area covers 13,000 square miles, and their goal is “uplifting rural communities.”

December 28, 1958 - January 16, 2022
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the children of Maria Alisa Louise “AJ” Johnson announce the unexpected and untimely passing of their beautiful, loving mother on January 16, 2022 in Bakersfield , California. Alisa was born on December 28th, 1958 in Lynwood, CA to Jacqulyn Noleman Johnson and Sidney Johnson, she was the fourth of seven children. When she was 9 years old, she moved with her family to Bishop, California, where she made many life long friends. Growing up with 6 siblings, Alisa learned early on that being strong, having a positive attitude, and determination that she could conquer anything that she put her mind to. She was a very good student, a tremendous athlete, and a wonderful friend and sister. After graduating from Bishop High School, Alisa attended Taft College where she was widely known for her dig deep attitude, her out of this world athletic ability, and her loyalty to her family and friends. After graduating from Taft College, Alisa chose to make Taft her home, raising her four children there, as well as building a 30 year career as a proud oilfield worker and electrician. Alisa would always say that she was called many things throughout her life; daughter, sister, teammate, friend, co-worker, but the one thing she cherished being called the most was ‘Momma’. Of all the awards and recognition that she had received from her athletic and work careers she would always say that that her greatest accomplishment were her children, she was so proud of them and loved each of them so much. Alisa was also tremendously loyal to her family and friends, if anyone needed help or just someone to talk to, she would always be there for them no matter how far away they were, or how hard it was on her, she would be there. Alisa was preceded in death by her parents, Jacqulyn and Maurice Sonnek, and her dearly loved little sister Misty Misquez. She is survived by her beloved children Audra, Zachariah, Carrie, and Sarah; Her brothers, Gary Johnson, Eric and Cindy Johnson, Chris Johnson, Matthew and Delene Misquez, and Maury and Cynthia Sonnek; Her aunt Patricia Belgarde; and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, god children as well as her many dear friends. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. There will be a Celebration of Life held in honor of Alisa at the Petroleum Club in Taft, California on Saturday March 19th, 2022 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Is It Winter or Spring? Who Knows? But what are the signs we look for that say “spring”? Sunrise and sunset; weather and air temperatures; plant activity; insect activity; animal activity; people activity. The calendar says the first day of spring 2022 is March 20th. Is it? Here at Wildcare, the sun shines while water dishes freeze. Lilacs bud, myrtle blooms; grass is brown and tules too. Recent visitors at Wildcare--red ants, house flies, honey bees, moths, beetles--are arriving. Ravens look for nests; chickadees come downslope away from the high elevation snow. We’ve admitted orphaned cottontails from the valley, but there are no rabbits or squirrels around here. Our current patients are immature Turkey Vulture and an immature Cooper’s Hawk! Is it winter or spring?? See for yourself. Take the time to get outside, whether yard, desert or mountains. Keep your eyes (and ears) open. Who knows what you might see.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH • FROM 7PM TO 10PM
Arrow-shot Red-tailed Hawk Released On Sunday afternoon, November 30, Wildcare’s Danielle Manriquez and volunteers rescued a Redtailed Hawk on the west border of Bishop Golf Course. He was first spotted near Sunland with an arrow shaft protruding from his body. He was able to flutter-fly across the alfalfa field, across a water ditch and up into a thick stand of trees. He became trapped in the low branches by the arrow ends. To rescue him, Danielle and Cindy Kamler (along with Dave, the original finder) drove around and onto the back road at the golf course. With the help of Dave’s sharp pliers, he and Danielle cut barbed wire and branches, removed several inches from the arrow, and got him in a carrier. At the Center, we prepared to remove the target arrow. It had penetrated the outside of the left thigh, passed through muscle, breaking the femur, then exiting mid-body. The shaft crossed the gap between the two legs, re-entered feathered tissue above the groin. It angled upward under the skin for about 3 inches, then exited.

Without access to x-ray, we couldn’t see what internal damage there might be. Our only option was to extract the remaining shaft. Danielle held the hawk securely, head covered, talons controlled. Cindy withdrew it steadily from the groin tissue, the space between the legs, from the thigh, and out! We held our breaths. Had it penetrated vessels, arteries, organs or lungs? He continued breathing, there was no bleeding, he was conscious! Time to stop, give him meds for pain and fear, and allow him to rest overnight. The next morning he was standing and alert! Hydration, pain control, and fracture immobilization were next. All systems functioned normally and soft foods were added to his treatment. He was on his way to full recovery. On January 30th, two months of medical care, physical therapy and flight conditioning later, the Red-tail was released from a transport carrier not far from home. He flew strongly to a tree where he perched, calmly observing the nearby landscape. Free at last!
Stranded Cackling Goose Finds New Home November 2, Wildcare received a call from Coso Junction Rest Stop. A traveler reported what sounded like a Canada Goose. They sometimes migrate in flocks through that area. His solitary presence suggested he might be injured. It was impossible for us WES to mount a rescue but others made numerous unsuccessful attempts. On January 2, Wildcare’s Danielle Manriquez picked up our ringing phone. Jessica was calling from Coso. She had caught the goose and would drive it to us. What arrived was an Aleutian Cackling Goose! Happily, an exam revealed a calm, healthy, uninjured bird. Placed in an outdoor cage furnished with tules, grasses, small “ponds” of water, and a large mirror, he calmly explored, then ate, drank and visited with his mirrored “friend.” What next? He needed companions and deep water. Some Bishop residents home adjourns a large pond with nearby grasses and open land. It doesn’t freeze in the winter and numerous waterbirds (ducks, wigeons, Canada Geese) frequently visit it. A few days later, Cindy, Leith and Danielle from Wildcare took the Cackler there for release. They set the Cackler’s carrier on the grassy pond edge and opened the door. He exited in a relaxed manner, taking his time, he jumped into the water. Still calm, he explored the pond, exchanging glances with his neighboring swimmers.
$100 WINNER EVERY 15 MINS FROM 9 PM TO 10 PM
Turning toward the pond center, he paddled a few feet, stopped abruptly, then began a joyful celebration, splashing and diving and ducking! “I’m in water! I can swim!” Paddle, stop, dive, dance; paddle, stop, dive, dance. Finally, the Cackler hopped onto a sunny spot on the bank to rest, happily preening his feathers! Wildcare’s staff left him there; the nearby resident promised to “keep an eye on him.” As weeks have passed, half-dozen or more Cackling Geese (they are a larger sub-species) have welcomed him into their flock. They graze on dried grasses, swim together, fly off to other ponds, return at intervals to the release site, and live happily together.
