Fuel and energy prices on the rise, again By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—No. It's not your imagination. The price of gasoline and fuels are on the rise again, nearly back to where the prices were in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic. As demand increases for gasoline, expect higher prices at the pumps nationwide, as the country begins economic recovery from Covid-19. Many in the gas / oil industry had notable losses from the pandemic, with citizens hunkering down at home, and slow downs in businesses, especially travel and leisure. The national average, according to AAA (American Automobile Association) is $2.42, barely a nickel cheaper than in March 2020, and in California and Nevada, gas prices rose four cents in a week's time. California average is $3.44; Nevada is $2.77, and Oregon is $2.69 a gallon.

Gas / Excise Taxes and the Cost to Produce Gasoline The prices of fuel and energy, gasoline in particular, are mainly based on the price per barrel of crude oil. A breakdown of the cost of a gallon of gasoline runs something like this, according to the EIA (US Energy Information Administration): 12 percent are refining costs; 18 percent are transportation and retail costs; 17 percent are the excise taxes, and 53 percent is the cost of crude oil. There are also state and federal excise taxes which get tacked onto the price

The gas tax in California is about 82.2 cents per gallon; 50.5 cents of that goes to California and the federal excise tax is about 18.4 cents a gallon. Diesel fuel is about $1.13 per gallon in government taxes; 38.5 cents goes to California. Excise taxes get paid on a variety of things / purchases, including: tobacco, gasoline, cannabis, airline tickets, tires, alcohol, and these taxes are paid at the time of purchase. (Source: irs.gov) Some excise taxes, like on tobacco, are prohibitive in nature, and discourage purchases. When the excise taxes are collected in California, it produces about $200 billion in revenue, which gets distributed between public services. The California gas taxes break down as follows: 59 percent of the tax goes to the highways / maintenance / construction; 22 percent are divided between paying for the Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol; seven percent help pay down debt; seven percent fund local law enforcement, and three percent is used for administration.

The old Model T Ford, two speed, in production from 1908-1927, cost $850, and with its 10 gallon gas tank, at 21 miles-per-gallon, it did almost as well...fuel wise...as the common commuter vehicle of today. Parked on Main Street, Bishop, CA, in the early 1900s, this old-timer cost 21 cents a gallon at the “filling stations.” Only major drawback to the Model T Ford, going uphill was nearly impossible in the mountains, with a gravity-fed fuel system unless the tank was completely full! California has 394,383 total lane miles, including 25 interstate highways, according to the Federal Highway Administration in 2018, only in second place to Texas, with 679,917 total lane miles. In the United States, each state maintains its own highways. In California, the longest highway is State Route 1, at 655.84 miles in length. US Highway 395 is an interstate highway, 1,305 miles in length, created in 1926, and spans from Hesperia, CA (south end) to Highway 395 at the border of Canada (north end). Once upon a time, US 395 did get to downtown San Diego, but now this section is an aligned part of Interstate 15. (Source: Federal Highway Administration and Energy.gov)

Fundraiser to gift daughter with a service dog Our daughter Tinsley has been partnered with 4 Paws for Ability to get a service dog! This soon to be best friend for Tinsley will be a great addition for her as it will help her with different daily tasks; it will also help by giving her some extra stability and independence when she is out and about. It will also be able to accompany her to all of her doctor appointments, her weekly full day infusions at the hospital, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and any other surgeries or outings. At 15 months old Tinsley was diagnosed with a metabolic disease called Mucopolysccharidosis (MPS) Typed IV A, also known as Morquio A syndrome. This very rare and progressive disease effects her ligaments, bones, and organs due to the lack of production of the GALNS enzyme. Each Tuesday Tinsley gets to spend the day with some of her best friends, who happen to be nurses at our local hospital, for a six-hour enzyme replacement therapy that helps her body get the enzyme it is lacking! We are so thankful that this therapy is available for Tinsley, even though it is currently the second most expensive medication in the US today.
