Spring Quartet 2020

Bill Schuck Quartet shows off their chops By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “In harmony with the land. In harmony with the community. --Bill Schuck Quartet Concert Series

The Bill Schuck Quartet plays their unique blend of music, contemporary tunes, with Sandy Anderson singing, on Sunday, February 23, from 3-4 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Bishop, CA. From left, Hadi Al-Saadoon, with flugelhorn and trumpet in hand; Bill Schuck, quartet founder and pianist; Ryan Mills, percussionist, and Orion Boucher, on bass. Photos courtesy of Yvonne Mills

Bishop, CA-- “It seemed to me the mix was right, says Bill Schuck of the formation of the new Bill Schuck Quartet. And, it took four years for this “absolutely superb mix to gel in the town of Bishop, CA, on Sunday, February 23, from 3-4 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church. Join in the sing-alongs, watch Sandy Anderson (Sandy and the High Country) sing her way into your heart strings, with a variety of contemporary tunes. Headlined as “In Harmony with the Land. In Harmony with the Community, the concert series benefits the Eastern Sierra Land Trust and the First United Methodist Church. “It is extremely important that we come together as a community, understanding and protecting our environment, and also developing relationships with one another. For in isolation we languish in boredom and loneliness. In community we celebrate our curiosity and friendship, says Schuck. Prior to the concert, there is a Mixer, starting at 2 p.m., at the Eastern Sierra Land Trust, with catering from the Great Basin Bakery, and wines from Manor Market. Featured artist, Rhonddha Saunders, will share her art starting at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist SEE QUARTET ON PAGE 5

Bishop Paiute Tribe swears-in new Tribal Court Judge After a nation-wide search for a tribal court judge, the Bishop Paiute Tribal Council interviewed and selected Gary E. LaRance (Hopi). Judge LaRance graduated from the Santa Clara University School of Law in 1981 where he received his juris doctorate degree in law. He has spent 37 years in the courtrooms of New Mexico, Arizona, Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nations, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Ak-Chin Indian Community, Colorado River Indian Tribe and Washoe Tribe of Nevada. He has prosecuted, defended, and tried over 2,000 criminal, juvenile, and civil cases. He has presided as judge over hundreds of other cases.

Owens River Annual Clean Up a huge success Pictured above left to right- Frances Romero (Tribal Court Committee Member), Jeannette Summers (Tribal Court Committee Member) Annette Apalatea (Tribal Court Administrator/Clerk), Gary E. LaRance (Tribal Court Judge).

Wow! Over 100 volunteers showed up last Saturday for the sixth consecutive Owens River Annual Clean Up. Seems like the constant pestering on social media paid off for event organizer Chris Leonard. The weather last Saturday was gloriously sunny which no doubt helped inspire people to show up to give the Owens River its annual cleansing. As always, the morning started with volunteers gathering at the Pleasant Valley Campground for coffee and pastries. Leonard thanked everyone for showing up. Jessica Strickland of Trout Unlimited and Eric Huber of Caltrout were both present with literature for interested volunteers on what their respective non-profit organizations do for our treasured fisheries. After hearing a warm-hearted “thank you” from Chris, volunteers split up to divide and conquer different parts of the river. Attendees returned at noon with enough trash to fill a six-foot-tall dumpster about two-thirds full. “It’s too bad this needs to be done,” Leonard commented, “but it’s great to see the community rally together every February to get er done!” Volunteers came from all over the state. There were several local residents present as well. A few went home with some cool free raffle swag including a fly-fishing rod and reel, tenkara rod, fly-fishing tools, literature, gift certificates, and clothing. All in all, it was a great success! Chris Leonard would like to personally thank the following supporters of this year’s event: Back Alley Bar and Grill, California Deer Association, California Waterfowl Association, Caltrout, Ducks Unlimited, Eastern Sierra Fish Reports, Erick Schat’s Bakery, Great Basin Bakery, Golden Trout Lanyards, Inyo Recycling and Waste Management, KIBS Radio, Kittredge Sports, KMMT-KRHV Radio, Orvis, Preferred Septic and Disposal, Rhino Nets, Rio, Redington, and Sage, Scientific Anglers, Sierra Brite Dot, Sierra Mountain Trout, Snowbee, Silver Lake Resort, Southwest Council, Fly Fishers International, Tenkara Tanuki, Trout Scout, Trout Unlimited, and Virginia Lakes Resort. Next year’s event will be Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021 – always the Saturday following the Super Bowl. People interested in making monetary donations for lunch or donations for the raffle – or any inquiries in general - can call Chris at 818-288-3271.

He has been an instructor and trainer for Northern Arizona University, National Indian Justice Center, National Institute of Trial Advocacy, National Domestic Violence Prevention Fund, Native American Alliance Foundation and National Association of Chiefs of Police, teaching criminal law and procedure, evidence, trial advocacy skills, Federal Indian Law, Indian Civil Rights Act, Indian Child Welfare Act, Healing to Wellness Courts, Domestic Violence, Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Child Neglect and Abuse. Judge LaRance presently sits on the Tribal Advisory Board for the National Tribal Judicial Center. Addressing substance abuse on the reservation is a priority for the tribe. With new funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the tribe now has the unique ability to establish a Youth Tribal Healing to Wellness Court. The tribe was awarded approximately $348,000 over a three-year grant to develop and implement this specialty court. The tribal community believes the youth are highest priority and there are many opportunities through development and coordination to address concerns of substance abuse among tribal youth. With this, Judge LaRance comes with six (6) years’ experience creating, managing and presiding as Judge of a Healing to Wellness Court (HTWC) for the Hopi Tribal Court. During his term as Chief Judge of the Hopi Tribal Court, he developed and administered the Healing to Wellness Court federal grant with 75-100 juvenile participant in the program. Judge LaRance has provided training to other tribes, tribal court personnel and judges on the development, administration and operation of the Healing to Wellness Court cases. As the tribe is still in its initial planning year, they will be seeking out key individuals to discuss, plan, and coordinate services for the youth such as collaborations with Inyo County Probation, Inyo County District Attorney, Bishop Paiute Police Department, Bishop Paiute Social Services, Toiyabe Indian Health Project, and other key stakeholders. With Judge LaRance’s expertise, the tribe is very excited to move forward with this project and bring a new service for our tribal youth who may be experiencing substance-related issues. Judge LaRance was sworn in by the Bishop Paiute Tribal Council on January 23, 2020. For any questions related to this matter please forward them to Annette Apalatea, Tribal Court Administrator/Clerk at 760-873-3584.

QUARTET CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Church. Schuck says the group of gentlemen began their eventual quartet in a barber shop. Yes, only in Bishop, would a local band of music makers meet through Matt Alcala, owner of Top Notch Barber Shop, and a drummer himself. The conjurer of music in many forms, Schuck has played far and wide, and he's an accomplished composer. He regards his community work, playing for the First United Methodist Church on Sundays, as their pianist, organist, and choir accompanist, and the hundreds of music students he's influenced as some of his benchmarks. “By happenstance, and one thing lead to another,” says Hadi Al-Saadoon, trumpet and flugelhorn, of the group's alliance in music and interests. Al-Saadoon, plays characters, local western inhabitants of the eastern Sierra, as well as playing the melodic flugelhorn. A German brass instrument, with a mellower sound. “Sounds like a human voice,” and carries a certain “emotion” about its qualities, Al-Saadoon adds. He's been playing the flugelhorn for 45 years, in places like Seattle, and San Francisco. Orion Boucher was raised on the Strawberry Music Festival and the Millpond Music Festival. Boucher's musical influences range from having had Schuck as a fifth grade teacher, to playing a Jimi Hendrix's riff on an electric bass given to him when he was 13 years old. He's played around the local gigs, such as Mammoth Mountain, Mill Creek, and the Mobil Mart in Lee Vining, CA. His college experience lead him to get into music as therapy. He is a counselor with Inyo County, working with kids and music, and giving back to the community. Boucher recommended percussionist, Ryan Mills, to the mix of the quartet. Mills, raised in Visalia, CA, took to a wide range of music early on, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (University of Redlands, 2010). He became a music teacher, traveled abroad, and also formed competitive high school drumlines, and marching bands. He's a private music teacher in the eastern Sierra, he plays with the Eastern Sierra Symphony, and he was the musical director for the production of Mamma Mia, with Playhouse 395.
