Fresh Tracks in Medicine

Pafford Health invites new patients gets to know you over time, which is an important part of the care plan, “a regular doctor.”

By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen

PQ-”Big City Medicine, Small Town Compassion, and Caring”--Pafford Health

Dr. Pafford also wants to explore tele-medicine, and health care plans which could include medical devices in our homes, which take our vital statistics, remotely, every day, and then transmit them to Dr. Pafford. This medical information will help him to see us better, and treat us, even from afar. And, he's open to suggestions about how to make these medical advances possible. He accepts most insurance plans, but cannot yet accept Medical, though he can accept dual eligible seniors that have Medicare.

Eastern Sierra, CA—“The Small Town with the Big Back Yard,” Bishop's moniker, is welcoming a new doctor and an innovative, all-around, health care provider, Dr. Bennett Pafford, to Bishop, CA this year. Dr. Pafford, who is building the practice from the ground up, literally, is inviting new patients to the ever-expanding office. And, fortunately for us, Dr. Pafford does make house calls, is very knowledgeable about remote medical theaters, is resourceful in finding solutions to public health issues / conflicts, and he practices internal medicine, while looking at the whole individual, and the landscape we live upon every day. A mix of Dr. Robert Denton (beloved Eastern Sierra country doctor), crossed with Dr. Nellie Doyle (one of California's first female doctors, who lived in the Eastern Sierra), Dr. Pafford has a diverse and very different path to his medical philosophy. A son of a large cattle ranching family in Florida, the rural life is a part of his heritage, and so are very active outdoor interests, like climbing, hiking, and running. As a retired Navy SEAL platoon commander (in 2000, following 20 years in the military), Navy Corpsman (a Marine medic, held in high esteem in any branch of the military), and medical / public health specialist (in remote war zones, such as Darfur, in the western region of the Sudan, in Africa), Dr. Pafford has an entirely different approach to medicine. Pafford Health is a non-profit, 501 (C) (3) (not making or conducted primarily to make a profit) practice. Dr. Pafford is an internal medicine specialist (medical school at Eastern Tennessee State University; residency training at UC Davis, Sacramento, CA; residency training at George Washington University, Washington D. C.). He can treat all ages, and he is focusing on geriatrics (older adults), which Dr. Pafford says is “where there is the greatest need.” He adds, in remote regions, such as the Eastern Sierra, there is a greater urgency for “health literacy,” and using this knowledge base to prevent “avoidable deaths.” And, on the topic of pain management, Dr. Pafford says emphatically,

Dr. Bennett Pafford opens the Pafford Health offices in Bishop, CA, and he and his staff will be taking new patients of all ages. Specializing in internal medicine, and geriatrics in particular, Dr. Pafford's medical services include being a VA Choice provider, and he makes house calls, when necessary.

he practices a “non-narcotic” based medicine, in regards to managing medical issues. He explains there are other medical plans to pain management, which don't involve the community-destroying effects of prescription drug abuse. “The job as a physician is to not make you worse,” Dr. Pafford notes. With a Masters in Public Health (Emory University, Atlanta, GA), and some time as a legislative assistant in health, in Washington D. C., Dr. Pafford is wellversed in the legislative processes / crises / and topics in health care in this nation. A veteran himself, Dr. Pafford will be available to take VA Choice patients, for services, annual visits, lab work, and this care will not be out of the VA health care system. This is an important service in the region for veterans who do not want or can not drive hundreds of miles in any direction for veterans' services, and medical appointments. There is also the advantage of having one physician, who

“I love medicine,” Dr. Pafford says. “Community health is about a healing sort of thing.” The renovated space Dr. Pafford is creating, largely with his own hands, is adding one minimalist exam room at a time, and with barter and trade options available, Dr. Pafford adds, you want to paint a bit, he'll work something out on the office visit. He's already made house calls on folks, even brought one couple a washer and dryer, since clean clothing is a part of our health, he explains. Uncommon for sure in his medical approach, Dr. Pafford will surely make fresh tracks on our landscape.

Pafford Health is “Big City Medicine, Small Town Compassion, and Caring,” and Dr. Bennett Pafford opens the doors to the new practice in Bishop, CA. The non-profit medical provider is an anomaly on the Eastern Sierra landscape, and Dr. Pafford offers 45 years of diverse medical experiences, including public health in war zones. He is building one minimalist exam room at a time, welcomes barter and trade, and even says, if you want to paint a bit, he'll work out something on the office visit. Photos by The Hired Pen

Photo: Slipping on ice, and breaking bones, while shoveling snow, is just one hazard to avoid this winter. Find out what the National Safety Council says about snow shoveling safety, and why it might be good to learn how to walk like a penguin, on slippery ice. Photo courtesy of Carson City, NV resident. By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Eastern Sierra, CA—We are working on a record-breaking February, and we've had snow, as of Presidents' Day, February 18th, for 14 days of the 18, according to Howard Sheckter; a long-time resident, and weather forecaster, in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Cold temperatures, rain and snow mixes (not so fondly called “snot,” it's snow, but it's not), and long periods of heavy snow are contributing to the accumulating winter weather risks, including: buildings' roofs collapsing, snow piling up on vents and propane tanks, and freezing pipes, due to prolonged periods of sub-freezing temperatures.

Push It! Snow shoveling is inevitable in winter mountain resorts, and residences with any elevations where snow can and does happen. The National Safety Council (NSC) has a few reminders about snow shoveling safety, as moving snow around can be hazardous to your health, and snow shoveling accidents do occur, about 11,000 a year, according to the Cleveland Clinic; and of these hospital treatments, seven percent of them are cardiac (heart) related. Slipping on ice, falling, and breaking bones are also possible, and it is recommended by some medical research in Europe, that you walk like a penguin...waddling back and forth, keeping your center of gravity on one leg, with your arms extended to the side, to keep your balance. • Do not shovel after eating or while smoking. • Take it slow, and stretch before you start. • Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter. • Push it, rather than lifting snow. • If you do have to lift, use a smaller shovel or only fill the shovel part way. • Lift with your legs bent, not your back.

Snowy Outdoor Calories-Burned Checker Your body burns more calories, and works harder in winter, in the outdoors, due to the cold. Shoveling snow, per hour, for a 155-pound person: 400-600 calories Cleaning snow off your roof, per hour, for a 160-pound person: 224 calories Scraping ice off your vehicle's windows, per 15 minutes: 56 calories Chopping and stacking wood, per 30 minutes, for a 160-pound person: 200 calories Walking a mile, per hour, for a 160-pound person: 100 calories Walking a mile, per hour, in winter burns 50 percent more calories than the same walk in summer. If you have heart issues, consult your doctor before strenuous winter outdoor chores, to see if your heart is up for the tasks.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Magic Words When Moses asked God, “Who should I say sent me?” “God said, “I am that I am.” God’s name is I AM. How many times a day do you start a sentence with “I am? “I am hungry, I am cold, I am bored, I am not good enough, or some declaration either in speech or thought which puts you behind the eight ball. Regardless of your belief in how you got here, in the first place, you were created to succeed. It would make no sense to have been brought into this world to fail. If so, mankind would have vanished from this plane a long time ago. Belief it or not it takes a whole lot of work to fail: Even so, the stubborn and the ignorant sure give it a try. God is Power. I Am is Power. Affirmations give Power. Rather than claiming calamity or negativity, turn it around and declare what you desire to feel or be. The words are important, but the acceptance of the desire is also. We must remember that God does not occupy time and space. We have a tendency to look at growth, or a healing as a process that will happen over time, but we are thinking and speaking now, not a few moments ago or in a few minutes. When you pray; are you praying to the god of yesterday, hoping he can do something tomorrow? God is the beginning and the end and it is all Now! Dr. Joseph Murphy wrote in his book “Pray Your Way Through It,” You are really invisible. You cannot see your mind, thoughts feelings, beliefs and convictions; neither can you see the feeling of love, faith, joy or enthusiasm. You are living with your thoughts, dreams, aspirations, longings and imaginings. You are not living in your body. Your body lives in you as an idea.” What are the ideas you have that are directing the body? The body has no mind of its own. It is wholly dependent on you to provide the direction it should take. Even a minor declaration of, “I am feeling sick, or I am coming down with something,” can make it so. It is much better to come up with something, and that is to know you are perfect, spiritual and divine. God works for you by working through you Jesus told us to believe while we pray and what we have believed we shall have. In other words we are to see the prayer answer even as we speak it. Too many pray for sick with a vision of a bedridden person on their mind. See them whole, perfect and complete. See a smile rather than a frown. Prayer carries with it responsibility. The one being prayed for has a role in their healing, but so does the one praying. We are dealing with the One Mind which is the Mind of God, and our use of that mind declares the healing, both in the prayer and the patient. Health and well-being in the One Mind is equal for both participants. As healing is accepted, it is done. Speak your “I Am’s” with wisdom! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Journeying with the Round Valley Mule Deer Eastern Sierra Land Trust and CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife to host Mule Deer migration corridor field trip on March 2 At this time of the year, many animals that call the Eastern Sierra home are preparing for a long journey. When food and shelter become scarce in their usual habitat and the weather gets colder, many animals migrate to warmer areas. The Round Valley mule deer herd is no exception. Twice each year, the mule deer herd migrates between its winter range on the valley floor to its summer range in the High Sierra meadows. The mule deer herd travels on the same paths each year, forming what biologists call a migration corridor. With each journey through the corridor, the herd will face both new and continuing threats to their survival. Near the community of Swall Meadows, the mule deer face an ongoing challenge. They must journey through a narrow bottleneck, created by Wheeler Ridge to the west and the deep Lower Rock Creek Gorge to the east, in order to travel between their summer and winter ranges. On this biannual journey, they also travel across busy roads and through residential areas. Challenging winters, raging wildfires, droughts and additional human development have also made the mule deer herd’s migration increasingly more difficult each year. These changes have increased the threat on the important resources that the mule deer depend on to make their long journey. Concerned by the impact human development would have on the mule deer herd, a group of residents teamed up to form what would become Eastern Sierra Land Trust. Since then, ESLT has worked with local land owners in the Swall Meadows area to permanently protect 269 acres of private land in addition to the 176- acre State Wildlife Area to ensure a safer passage for the mule deer each year. On Saturday, March 2nd, from 2-5 pm, Eastern Sierra Land Trust invites you to explore a portion of the Round Valley herd’s migration corridor. Timothy Taylor, a biolo-

gist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), will share stories and information about the region’s Round Valley Mule Deer Herd as the group admires spectacular valley views and searches for wildlife. This free event is open to all ages; for more event information (including meeting location) and to RSVP, please contact Marie, ESLT Education Coordinator and AmeriCorps member, at marie@eslt.org, or call (760) 873-4554.
