Airport Fire in Inyo County Under Investigation

Trout Rodeo promises you can “Fly or Spin for the Win”

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Eastern Sierra, CA—The first ever Trout Rodeo is slated for Saturday, February 26, and this event promises that whether you fly fish or use a spinning rod and reel, you’ll win, if you have enough landed fish inches. Fishing action starts at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, Bishop, CA, and you must have pre-registered online for this event to compete for the raffle prizes and prize buckets. The Southwest Council Fly Fishing International is a part of hosting this all anglers event, and registration must be done ahead of the tournament and detail can be obtained at www. swcffi.org/rodeo. Teams can compete, professional guides can compete (in their own category), and there will be awards for fly caught fish inches, and lure caught fish inches. Anglers need to photograph and record their catches to be in the rodeo / tournament, and winners will receive raffle tickets for prize buckets.

Firefighters continue mop-up and containment lines as of February 20, 2022

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

The object of this premier rodeo is to get the most amount of landed fish inches. It’s a catch and release tournament, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the waters from the Upper Owens (Long Ears: about five miles downstream from Big Springs; left on the dirt road past the cattle guard) to Independence, so anglers will have a chance to try their hand at their favorite waters. Winning inches must be turned in by 4:30 p.m., and then the Fairgrounds is front and center for awards, dinner, raffles, and dining options. Start Early, Shop Locally, and Star Gaze There are lots of bakeries in Bishop for an early start to your days, and you can try scoping out your fishing spots early too. Take into account the weather and landscape and fish you want to experience. And, when you shop locally, you experience another layer of living in the Eastern Sierra. Day tripping isn’t complete without shopping for your favorite activities, and from jerky to wine cellars, to new brews or boots and jeans, to mules and trout fishing...if you can think of an outdoor adventure, you can probably find it in the Eastern Sierra. Star gaze, if the weather permits. Winter skies are a dazzling display looking east a little before dawn. Brilliant Venus is joined by the orange planet, Mars, and other planets Mercury and Saturn around the 27th of February, and the following morning too! Daylight savings time begins on March 13, at 2 a.m. And, even if you don’t catch anything but a good time, take some mental pictures of your days.

Inyo County, CA—A blow-torch fierce wildfire blew up on February 16, 2022, in the afternoon, as gusts of wind up to 50 mph carried the fire southward from near the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport, Bishop, CA. The blaze, which is under investigation, began around Airport Road and East Line Street, at the eastern edge of the town of Bishop. Initially, the fire’s southward progress required the evacuation of the eastern side of the town of Big Pine, CA, about 15 miles south of where the fire originated. These evacuation orders were lifted on February 17, and the entire Owens Valley was warned of the evacuation notice on their smart phones / cell phones. The Airport Fire is currently active and has burned 4,136 acres, and is 55 percent contained (as of 2/20/2022 at 7:41 a.m.). It has not burned any structures, and has larger stayed near the Owens River embankments. According to the status update on Cal Fire’s website: “Firefighters will continue mop-up and reinforce containment lines throughout the day and night in preparation for anticipated weather changes in the coming days.” The first ever Trout Rodeo gets started on Saturday, February 26, in Bishop, CA, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. Register early for this premier event at www.iAngler and for more information, check out www.swcffi. org/rodeo. “Fly or Spin for the Win”

Catch up with the latest in fishing gear and tackle, bait and information about the local waters, at Reagan’s Sporting Goods, Main Street, Bishop, CA. Reagan’s has a large selection of the best fly fishing flies, and tips for angling in the Eastern Sierra.

The Pleasant Valley Reservoir, just north of Bishop, CA, is just one of many places all anglers in the Trout Rodeo, Saturday, February 26, Bishop, CA, can try their hand at landing as many fish inches, in this catch and release event. Waters from the Upper Owens (Long Ears) to Independence are open for the first ever Trout Rodeo. Photos by The Hired Pen

Cal Fire used three helicopters, 51 engines, seven dozers, eight water tenders, 680 personnel, and 16 crews. Locally, volunteer fire departments from up and down US Highway 395 assisted in the fire fighting efforts, and they continue to man the fire lines too. Thank you to all of the firefighters and fire personnel, law enforcement, and the counties for providing emergency services in such a quick fashion.

The 2022 Blake Jones Trout Derby is set for Saturday, March 12th in Bishop, California. Since 1968, the event has been a favorite tradition for Eastern Sierra locals and visitors alike. This year is shaping up to be a great one according to the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau. “At this point, we feel confident we’ll be allowed to have the event and do so in a way that is safe and fun for everyone,” states Chamber Executive Director Tawni Thomson. While event planners hope to have a pre-pandemic size crowd, there is plenty of room for people to spread out while fishing and at the fairgrounds. Every year, nearly $10,000 worth of cash and prizes are awarded including float tubes, rods & reels, gift certificates to local shops and restaurants and more. The Blake Jones derby is a blind bogey format with categories for adults and kids of all ages. In addition to the blind bogey awards, there will be prizes for early bird registrations, farthest travel, biggest fish, even prizes for those who don’t catch any fish or choose to catch & release. Registration, weigh-in, and awards ceremony will be at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds in downtown Bishop. Fishing locations include Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens River. California Department of Fish and Wildlife plants Rainbow Trout year-round in these locations and the Bishop Chamber will arrange for supplemental stocking of fish purchased from Wright’s Rainbows prior to the derby. “We want to make sure there are plenty of fish for everyone,” explains April Leeson, Event Coordinator at the Bishop Chamber of Commerce. “The derby is a real family-friendly fishing event. In addition to the fishing contest, we’ll have information booths, educational displays, kids’ casting games, activities and more,” Leeson added. Registration for the derby is now open. PIT Count

2020 was a year of uncertainty. With the world shutting down, most were at a loss with no choice but to adjust..or at least do our very best. The Rotary Needs Committee was created at the pinnacle of the pandemic. Its purpose: addressing the needs of local youth, families, schools and others in our community. Meeting about once a week, this collaboration between the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Bishop Rotary Club approaches the most prominent needs in the area created by the pandemic. This joint Pandemic Task Force began with their first project known as the COVID Community Assistance Fund, which would receive donations and disperse funds to support local programs. Most recently, in cooperation with Larry Emerson, Housing and Planning Director for Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action (IMACA) and the local United Methodist Social Services, the Rotary Needs Committee coordinated funding to purchase supplies to support IMACA’s annual Point-In-Time (PIT). PIT is a count of people experiencing homelessness in our area. For this project, a total of $1,300 was raised by both Rotary Clubs and two private donations. A total of 30 supply kits were purchased by the United Methodist Social Services. These kits include toiletries and personal hygiene items, gloves, socks, water bottles, and grocery gift cards. Roberta Cummings, from United Methodist Social Services, took the lead on sourcing and purchasing supplies. All kits were packed at the Bishop United Methodist Church by Roberta, Soup Kitchen Host Kathie Maurice, and Church Pastor Kate Hunter. Local Rotarians and members of the Rotary Needs Committee, Betsy McDonald, Robert Atlee and Fran Hunt delivered the kits to IMACA. Kits were then received by IMACA staffer April Powell, Audrey Bear and Katherine Knox. The Point-In-Time count will take place on February 23 this year. The Rotary Community Needs Committee welcomes suggestions of how local Rotarians can best help our area. Suggestions can be sent to Committee Chair Betsy McDonald at betsymcdonald19@gmail.com.

Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action Downsizing

Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action, Inc. (IMACA) is facing significant fiscal challenges and will be forced to limit services soon. There is still substantial uncertainly about IMACA’s path forward, but what is clear is that in the immediate future IMACA will only be able to provide services that are more limited in scope than it currently does. The primary goal of IMACA and our partners is to maintain as many services as possible while ensuring the future financial health of the organization. While this situation is clearly very difficult for staff, clients, and families who receive services from IMACA, no stone is being left unturned in trying to avoid this tough outcome. “There was no single event that has caused this difficult situation, but instead a wideranging mix of fiscal concerns have led IMACA to where it is today,” said Executive Director Kate Morley. “Some of the financial issues IMACA is facing have quite literally been a challenge for a full decade or more, and others have developed much more recently, in just the past month or two. Compounding the situation have been an increased demand for services during the pandemic, significant recent staff turnover, and several key vacancies that have been hard to fill. We hope that by swiftly adjusting programs now we can assure the long-term stability of IMACA.” IMACA is a nonprofit Community Action Agency committed to serving and empowering the low-income residents of Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties in California. IMACA runs six preschool centers, two affordable housing apartment complexes, additional housing and homelessness services, home weatherization and energy assistance programs, a childcare assistance program, and a food program that often serves over 450 households per month. “Our number one priority right now is maintaining continuity of services for community members as much as we possibly can,” said IMACA Board Chair Carolyn Balliet. “We are working hard to keep the food program and energy assistance programs afloat within IMACA. We are also reaching out to community partners to see if they are able and willing to administer programs that IMACA has previously overseen directly. Partners such as Mammoth Lakes Housing, Wild Iris, the Inyo and Mono County Offices of Education, Inyo and Mono Counties, the City of Bishop and the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and the Eastern Sierra Continuum of Care have all been of great assistance during these tough times. While we do not have many concrete details to share today, we hope to provide more information about the next steps for IMACA and these important programs in the coming weeks and months.” The IMACA Board of Directors would like to extend a grateful thank you to all the amazing and hardworking employees and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to provide quality services over the years, often with limited resources and despite tough circumstances. IMACA has thrived in the past because of community engagement, and it is the sincere wish of the IMACA Board of Directors that the organization will return to thriving again soon.

Dear Inyo County Residents,

I am formally withdrawing my name from the ballot for District 3 Supervisor in the June 7th, 2022 primary election. I am so thankful for all the support and encouragement I have received. I am asking those who support me and those who care about freedom, to support Scott Marcellin for District 3 Supervisor. Scott is a man of faith, family, and community. He has vast knowledge of the issues facing our county and I am certain he will serve the people of Inyo County with the utmost integrity. I am excited about our future with Scott Marcellin as District 3 Supervisor. Thank you all so much.
