The Tablelands and What’s on the Plate

The Volcanic Tablelands, northeast of Bishop, CA, attracts world-class climbers, scientists, and thousands of visitors annually.The Bishop Tuff is pink and white, and is part of a pyroclastic event, which took place 767,000 years ago, in Long Valley, north of Bishop. By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—A violent change occurred just north of Bishop, about 767, 000 years ago, when the Volcanic Tablelands were created. It happened in what is now the Long Valley Caldera, and the volcanic material, rhyolitic pyroclastic flow, glowing with heat, blanketed nearly 600 miles between Mono Lake (north) and Bishop (south), at a depth of 500 to 600-plus feet, and dropped the ash as far as Nebraska. Many times more powerful than Mount St. Helen (1980 eruption), the force of the event has been studied by geologists, who investigate the former fumaroles, or sites of volcanic vents, which sit in an eroded state on the surface of the Volcanic Tablelands. These structures were not created by volcanic eruptions, but instead these are the spots where scientists can see how gases escaping acted like a oven to bake the ash, as the flows cooled. The Tablelands have many layers of debris, ash, pumice, dense rock, and even some basalt columns, in the Owens Valley Gorge, where the Owens River cuts into the Tablelands. The Bishop Tuff is the pink tuff, but it also comes in white. (Source: Geology.35. Crowley, J. L. 2007). The Volcanic Tablelands have changed what geologists and the world knows about plate tectonics, and what is understood about volcanic rocks and their age and magnetic polarity. The Bishop Tuff has been used in the past forty years to determine the last major reversal of the magnetic poles (north and south), and this knowledge has lead to other discoveries about the age of the earth itself. Eleven to twelve thousand years ago, the indigenous people who lived on the Tablelands were nomads in the Great Basin, and

The Happy and Sad Bouldering areas, near Chalk Bluffs, on the Volcanic Tablelands, is visited by thousands of climbers annually, and it's not uncommon to see hundreds of vehicles from all over the US, parked near these bouldering spots. the Paiute Indians lived in the Owens Valley hundreds of years prior to European arrivals. Most of the tribes on the eastern side of the Sierra are related to the other indigenous people of the Great Basin, and not west side tribes. These people moved over the landscape with the seasons, and the animal migrations. The Tablelands were a part of the seed lands, camps, and trails created along streams, and springs. Nearby in the Bishop area, villages, and irrigated lands existed, and also in Round Valley. The Tablelands, on the eastern side, up and down US Highway 6, are places where minerals, and pumice were mined, and further up northeast of the Tablelands, near Benton, CA, gold and silver mining was very prominent in the 1880s. The Wells Fargo stage ran from Laws (near Bishop) to Benton, up the Fish Slough Road, along much the same dirt road as today. During the 1940s, Benton and the surroundings produced most of California's pumice (used in stucco and acoustical plaster mixes). Today, the Volcanic Tablelands see thousands of visitors a year, and with the emerging climbing culture in and around Bishop, there are people world-wide who come to recreate, boulder, camp, fish, hike, bike, and study the unique region. On any given weekend, in the winter, spring, and fall, there are hundreds of vehicles parked near the Happy and Sad Bouldering areas (Chalk Bluffs), and climbers ascend the trails with crash pads on their backs, and chalk bags. During the winter months, “The Pit,” campground, on Bureau of Land Management, attracts visitors who can stay about three months in primitive camp sites, in the shadow of Mt. Tom, and the Sierra. Climbing is a multi-milliondollar tourist attraction in the Eastern Sierra, where people come for the world-class problems, scenery, and climbing community in Bishop.
