OVRO or “Big Ears” 2023

Owens Valley Radio Observatory studies the skies

Eastern Sierra, CA—Many people know the Owens Valley Radio Observatory by its local name, the “Big Ears,” but the astronomy, astro physics, and scientific research taking place at OVRO makes it one of the world’s foremost and largest university-based radio astronomy facilities. Operational since the 1950s, Dr. Mark Hodges recently gave an interesting talk for OVRO, at a Lions’ Club lunch in Bishop, CA. Dr. Hodges is well-known astronomer around the Owens Valley, and he began working at OVRO in 1984. His Astronomy Watch in the local newspaper details the night skies, and highlights some of the interesting astronomy. Many others know Dr. Hodges as the Bishop Union High School Wrestling team coach. And, Dr. Hodges, a long-time resident of the Owens Valley, was just the person to explain the difficult research projects taking place at OVRO.

Unlike spotting stars and planets with a telescopes, the scientists at OVRO use “radio telescopes to pick up naturally produced radio emission from all kinds of objects in space: comets, planets, stars, neutron stars, galaxies, blazars [active galactic nucleuses / nuclei], and clouds of gas,” according to the handout by Dr. Hodges. “Radio waves are exactly like visible light in every way except they are millions of times longer in wavelength.” Another interesting detail Dr. Hodges reveals during the talk, is that “Radio observations can take place 24 hours a day, unlike optical observation which normally require dark skies.”

ORVO is operated by the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech), but other university projects have been done at OVRO over the Dr. Hodges has been doing an outreach program for OVRO for decades, and he’s helped people understand some of the objects in our universe. What the public sees from US Highway 395, outside of Big Pine, CA, is just a smidgen of what’s actually at work in the facility’s footprint. There are 96 antennas combing “patches of sky,” says Dr. Hodges, and these galaxies are far beyond the Milky Way.. Some of the arrays (a group of several radio antennas) feature enormous radio telescopes (one more than 130 feet across or 40 meters).

In the future, Dr. Hodges notes, there are very amitious plans to build and put nearly 2,000 telescopes in Nevada, and these will be looking into another “patch of space.” This project joins others in the works, including telescopes (10.4 meters across or 34 feet across) which will explore / monitor carbon monoxide (CO). Information gathered by the telescopes gets input, and 23 super computers work out the data at the OVRO facility.

The Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) or “Big Ears” is home to the world’s largest, university-based radio observatory, and the enormous telescopes and the “radio observations can take place 24 hours a day unlike optical observations which normally require dark skies,” according to Dr. Hodges. In the future, Dr. Hodges explains, there are projects which will use 2,000 radio telescopes in Nevada, to make more findings about the universe, and the skies above us. Photos by The Hired Pen

Long-Time Ambulance Provider Gives Notice to Cease Operations in Bishop Area

Symons Emergency Services has given notice to the Inland Counties

Emergency Medical Agency (ICEMA) that in the near future it will cease providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance services in the Exclusive Operating Area (EOA), which encompasses the greater Bishop area. Symons has served the Bishop area since 1989. Its current contract with ICEMA requires an ALS level of response in the Bishop area EOA, which ensures that a paramedic is on board the responding ambulance. Over the past year, the Bishop Fire Department has backed up Symons with additional ambulance service, mostly provided by volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) delivering Basic Life Support (BLS) services.

“While Symons’ decision to cease service is unfortunate, the City and County are working together to develop a plan that will ensure continued critical ambulance service for the residents and visitors in the greater Bishop area,” said City Administrator Deston Dishion. Both agencies are committed to keeping the public informed as they work through the process.

In its formal notice to ICEMA, Symons Emergency Services cited unsustainable financial losses as the reason for the company ceasing ALS operations in Bishop. Symons said it can no longer bear the burden of subsidizing the ambulance service as a result of rising costs continuously outpacing Medicaid reimbursement rates.

Symons, ICEMA, and the agencies are exploring the possibility of Symons providing BLS services as a short-term solution that may allow for a smoother transition to a new provider. All involved Emergency Service partners are committed to ensuring ambulance service is available while a long-term solution is sought. Public meetings will be scheduled in the near future for residents to give input.

Ticket Sales Launch February 1st, for 53rd Annual Bishop Mule Days Event

Inyo County Releases Emergency Services Survey

OFFICIALS SEEKING INPUT ON POTENTIAL DISASTER CONCERNS

The Inyo County Office of Emergency Services is updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) to prepare for disasters and is seeking public input.

FEMA defines Hazard Mitigation as: “… any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards (44 CFR 201.2). Hazard

Mitigation activities may be implemented prior to, during, or after an actual event. However, it has been demonstrated that hazard mitigation is most effective when based on an inclusive, comprehensive, long-term plan that is developed before a disaster occurs.”

The LHMP is a plan to implement actions to reduce injuries and losses from disasters and ensure that the critical services and facilities of the County will continue to function after a disaster.

“Inyo County residents face the potential for earthquakes, floods, wildfires, hazardous materials incidents, power outages, infrastructure failure, transportation accidents, avalanches, and seismic activity,” Emergency Services Manager Mikaela Torres said. “But there are actions we can take to mitigate and lessen the effects of these disasters.”

Ticket sales kickoff February 1st for the 53rd annual Bishop Mule Days Celebration held this year May 23rd – 28th, 2023 at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds. Online sales open at midnight via the Mule Days website, www.muledays.org or call the office 760-872-4263.

Tickets for Grandstand and General Admission seating, RV spots, Concert and the Saturday Dance will be available. Typically RV parking for full hookups sell out by noon on the first day of sales, so the Show office suggests being first in line to get your RV spots. This year Mule Days is excited to announce as our Concert headliner, Ned LeDoux! Ned is making his first time visit to the Bishop area and fans couldn’t be more excited. According to Ned, “I’m writing my own story and if people take a liking to it, that’s wonderful. As long as I’m writing from the heart, and writing about what I know, I can definitely listen back to it and be proud.” Ned’s music transcends mere entertainment and celebrates a life that many aspire to, but few actually get to live. Like his father Chris, his music is as expansive as the western sky he was raised under and celebrates the ranch lifestyle that is such an integral part of his heritage. There’s an authenticity to his songs that brings our Nation’s beloved western culture to life.

LeDoux is respected for his high-energy live shows that mix his western roots with the rock & roll influences he acquired in his youth. He’s been an opener for such as acts as Toby Keith, Aaron Watson and Garth Brooks. Don’t miss the chance to see him live and in person Thurs day, May 25th in the Charles Brown Auditorium. VIP Meet and Greet begins at 5:30 p.m., with the Concert at 7 p.m.

Opening for the Ned LeDoux Concert is Justin Lawrence and the Double Average Band. Jus tin, a professional Saddle Bronc rider and Country Singer is a rising star in the Country Music scene. Headlining PRCA concerts, playing at breweries and wineries in California including events at Cal Poly and Fresno State, Justin is sure to be a hit with our college contestants who come from all over the State to compete in our Collegiate packing competitions. Justin will also be playing for the Mule Days Saturday night dance. Back by popular demand, the traditional Country Western Dance will also be in the Charles Brown Auditorium, Saturday evening, May 27th after the Mule Show.

The ever-popular Mule Days Parade, the Guinness Book of World Records “Longest Non-Mo torized Parade” will be back Saturday morning, featuring the Mule Days color guard “Range of Light Mules”, local school bands, pack strings and Mule Days own 20 Mule Team pulling the legendary Borax Wagons. The Borax Wagons, housed at Laws Railroad Museum, return to Main Street with the world famous 20 Mule Team that has travelled the United States bringing history to life. The 20 mule ‘jerkline’ hitch is the only one of its kind in the world, making the Parade and Mule Shows a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this spectacular working hitch.

Beginning on Tuesday, May 23rd, all mule shows through Friday morning offer free admis sion, while tickets are required for the Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, Saturday eve ning and Sunday afternoon shows. All other Mule Shows, clinics, vendors, ever popular kid’s events and entertainment at the Coso Energy Stage are free for all. Mule Shows are known for high-energy entertainment and fun-filled competitions. Guests love the Packers Scrambles –found nowhere else on earth! Musical tires, chariot races, roping, World Championship finals events and almost every imaginable competition round out the shows. Mule Days lives up to its motto: “Anything a horse can do, a mule can do better”! Inyo County wants to hear from the public. Emergency Services has developed a survey for residents, business owners, and County employees to share what concerns them the most about potential disasters. Take this opportunity to let the County know what concerns you before, during, or after a disaster. The survey will remain open until March 8, 2023.
