Building and Decorating to stand the tests of time Traditional trends return in 2019, with a twist of durable, time-tested materials and decor By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Home building and furnishings are an ever-changing landscape, with weather, finances, and availability of materials, supplies, hardware, fixtures, and tastes in decor helping to shape the home, ranch, or farmhouse. Doing things “in-house” or doit-yourselfers (DYI) is still a very popular trend. However, from the dirt in the garden, to the experience of seeing your plans come to fruition, you still need a complete business to shop for the necessary items for preparation, materials, and someone to discuss the timing and best approach for your projects. Trending in 2019 Home building and decorating for 2019 will focus on natural materials, such as stone, granite, and copper. Fixtures made of brass make a return for the year, along with farmhouse designs for the home. Keeping with the farmhouse / homestead theme, DIYers are finding old cabinets, and applying some of the newer, environmentally friendly paints, with antique effects through stains and tints. Bolder color palettes prevail this year, along with a re-make of black and white designs for a more contemporary look. Vintage, vintage, vintage is

the word for 2019. Whether you are re-modeling, re-decorating with building modifications, or just an out-right make-over, designs and shopping will involve the emotions more than the wallets. The farmhouse trough-style sink, or the bolder color options in the kitchen, and a move toward light wood floors will create a nostalgic feeling with a contemporary presence. Handcrafted, embellished, and painted backsplashes will

replace simplistic and minimalist counters, and a onepalette color approach will be ushered out with personalized kitchens, with satin metal light fixtures and ceilings with designs. Art deco enthusiasts will rejoice in the fact that the midcentury tastes of glamorous are coming back in vogue. And, heads up, the 1970s décor, with geometric patterns becomes hip again. Decorating with plants, such as using old ladders as

shelves for books, plants and keepsakes will also be coupled with the use of driveways / side strips as vegetable gardens, with containers and strawbalegrown tomatoes brightening your pathways. And, while technology and gadgets run the businesses and afford customers the perception of being more convenient, a return to personal relationships will move more enterprises forward, when tethered to e-commerce shipping. Visiting your local hardware / lumber store will offer the opportunities of actually talking to someone who knows the business' contents and services, without having to use your geo-location devices to search for the best fit for your needs. Ace High Country Lumber / Trends Design Center, Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, allows customers to view a number of decorating options, with Kimberly Jones (Bishop) assisting in finding the right windows, doors, cabinets, hardware, countertops, heating, flooring, and appliances. The store also offers the latest in premium paint products, with Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® (of HGTV), in partnership with Kilz Brand®. Scott Lasley, store manager at Ace High Country Lumber, says the store has the state-of-the-art KeyKrafter, which can turn / make

There are auto keys, remotes, blades with remotes, ultrasmart remotes, and ultra-high security key options. “Keys are getting smarter, and we have to get smarter with them,” notes Lasley. The new KeyKrafter is a “good investment for customers and the community.” He adds with a smile, Ace High Country Lumber is a “so-

Can a California-bred win the Kentucky Derby again?

King Glorious winner Galilean might be the next Cal-bred hope for the Kentucky Derby (photo by Benoit) Is it too early to start asking questions about the Kentucky Derby?... I think the answer is an emphatic “it’s never too early to ask about the Kentucky Derby”. A recent stakes race in the Golden State has caused a little head-scratching about the 145th Run for the Roses. Run every year since 1875, the world’s most famous race has been dominated by horses born in the state of Kentucky. All-in-all, 110 Derby winners had their hooves hit the ground in the bluegrass state. Florida ranks as the next best with 6 and the hotbed for horseracing state of California has had only 4 natives wear the blanket of roses. So why are we asking this question now? The December 16 King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos saw Galilean romp to a 9length win. The Jerry Hollendorfer trained son of Uncle Mo made his second win in three career starts look awfully easy. The one-mile race restricted to California-breds has spurred these thoughts because the last left-coast born Derby champ also won this same race on his way to the winner’s circle on the first Saturday in May. California Chrome took the 2013 edition as he began his incredible journey into the history books. Before Chrome, the California-born Derby champions had been Morvich in 1922, Swaps in 1955, and Decidedly in 1962. Numbers tell us despite the favorable conditions for year-round running on the West Coast, California-bred horses just do not seem to be prominent on the road to the Kentucky Derby. Because inquiring minds want to know, we turn to a man that has played a role in half of the Cal-born Derby winners. Art Sherman was the exercise rider for Swaps and the trainer for California Chrome. Having been a part of the game in California for over six decades, the Brooklyn-born with over 2100 wins as a trainer knows a little something about getting to the winner’s circle. “You have to win races to get to the Derby and these days the biggest obstacle in California is Bob Baffert,” jokes Sherman. “Bob always has some talented youngsters and he does such a great job of developing them into Derby horses. He usually has Kentucky-breds and always has them ready for the big ones.” With the current Derby points system in place to determine the starters for the first Saturday in May, Sherman is on the money with his winning races thoughts. Obviously it is important to make the cut with enough qualifying points, but how you score is where the veteran trainer sees an emphasis. “I think the path you take with a Cal-bred is the most important thing,” says Sherman. “When Chrome won the King Glorious that was the first time he really looked special. He won impressively, but before we ran him in open company we wanted to get him some more confidence so we ran in another restricted race in January (California Cup Derby). Getting your horse to the Kentucky Derby is about building momentum as the early part of the year unfolds. It takes some calculating and of course some luck too.” Another factor Sherman cites is the strength of the Kentucky broodmare population. Kentucky is obviously home to many of the top farms in the game with many leading sires, but the number of outstanding moms is up there as well. “There is no question about all the talented females that call Kentucky home,” says Sherman. “The broodmare crop is always very strong and the numbers are outstanding. It is hard to compete because the talent pool is so deep in Kentucky.” As the last man to pull off a Cal-bred win in the Kentucky Derby, Sherman has seen it all work. Understanding that it is still five months until the first Saturday in May, it is far too early to stamp this year’s King Glorious winner as a California based contender. “He looks like a really nice horse,” says Sherman of Galilean. “I told Jerry to take his time with him because I think he has a good colt in his hands. It is hard to compete with the Kentucky-breds, but he has the looks of one that might could get there.” According to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Galilean will make his next start in a stakes race restricted to California-breds at Santa Anita in January which is the same path used by Sherman….hmmmmm.

Bishop Community Concert presents The City of Angels Saxophone Quartet The City of Angels Saxophone Quartet (COASQ) has championed the emergence of saxophone quartet on the concert stage for more than 25 years. Shortly after its founding in the early 1990s, the ensemble, based in Los Angeles, CA was the first saxophone quartet to win top honors at the prestigious Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions. Recent honors have included concerts sponsored by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, appearances at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles, CA and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Most recently the group was honored by an invitation to appear at the prestigious Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival in Florida sharing the bill with Itzhak Perlman, Anne Akiko Meyers, Bella Fleck and the Dover String Quartet. With a wide and varied repertoire developed and seasoned over time, the ensemble constantly seeks new ways to connect with audiences through succinct commentary focusing on the human stories behind the music that they perform. The ensemble received repeat endorsements from the Southern California Consortium of Chamber Music Presenters and has been in-demand on the Southern California Chamber music scene, with innovative programs to attract and retain audiences. The effectiveness of this approach to make classical music more accessible to audiences is evident in repeat appearances at many venues. The concert will be held Sunday, January 13, at 3 p.m. in the Bishop High School Auditorium. Non-members cost is $25 at the door. Members can bring a friend for $10 to introduce them to BCCA.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Governed by Law It’s that time of year when new laws are put into effect; some of them are modifications or revisions of old laws, and some are brand new. Somehow we are supposed to find out what they are, and then, comply with them. There are spiritual laws that have been effect for as long as man has been on the scene, and it appears that not as many people as should be, pays attention to them. You must remember that this is a lawful universe; otherwise we would be constantly bumping in to each other. This is a good time to review, or get acquainted with a few of those Laws. You will see that one individual law does not stand alone, but incorporates elements of other laws. For example: When Jesus said, “It is done onto you as you believe,” that draws the Law of Mind, the Law of Attraction and the Law of Correspondence into the picture; not to mention a whole host of other laws. Let’s start our review with the Law of Mind. We are all breathing, thinking, and feeling beings. We are always thinking; even in our sleep, and the thoughts we think are reacted to by our feeling nature. Belief is generated by ideas and thinking that hold to a particular point of view Belief can be correct or incorrect and you experience the results of your belief. Feeling is not just a good/bad scenario. There are many degrees of each. By our thoughts and feelings, we are telling the Universe just what we want in our life. It may not sound like what you thought it would be, but God is listening to you. One of those little laws states, “Whatever you are paying attention to, magnifies.” The Bible puts it very simply when it says, “It is God’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” What that means is that you are the ruler of your house and whatever you desire will be yours, and if you didn’t want it, you wouldn’t pay attention to it. If thou protest too much, you just might be attracting more of what you’re protesting. We can Segway right into the Law of Attraction. You are always drawing to you or repelling from you people, places or things. Everybody in your world has been given an engraved invitation to appear in your world; even those you may only see once, or you don’t want to see again. As Shakespeare said, “All the world is a play.” It is your play, and you are not just the actor, director, producer, but the casting director as well. You are in charge of your life. Your consciousness determines what you will draw into your life. This is a good time to examine what’s in your world and make changes in your beliefs where appropriate. We are at the end of the article and I just got started explaining the Laws, and there is so much more to share. Stay tuned and I will get to more, in time. In the meantime, get started with these two basic laws, and we will go on from there. Of course, you could always come to church and hear more. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!

Early New Year’s Celebrations history.com Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. Today, most New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 (New Year’s Eve), the last day of the Gregorian calendar, and continue into the early hours of January 1 (New Year’s Day). Common traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year’s foods, making resolutions for the new year and watching fireworks displays.

Early Celebrations The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose: It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler’s divine mandate was symbolically renewed. Did you know? In order to realign the Roman calendar with the sun, Julius Caesar had to add 90 extra days to the year 46 B.C. when he introduced his new Julian calendar. Throughout antiquity, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice. Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia.

January 1 Becomes New Year’s Day The early Roman calendar consisted of 10 months and 304 days, with each new year beginning at the vernal equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. A later king, Numa Pompilius, is credited with adding the months of Januarius and Februarius. Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today. As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus’ birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582.
