Lone Pine, CA—The new Lone Pine High School Principal, Joseph Garza, and Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce leaders were given a warm welcome by Owens Valley residents who attended the gathering, at the home of David and Jeanne Willey, of Lone Pine, CA. The chamber installation and introduction to Garza were facilitated by the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce. “Fortunate to hear a 'Yes'” Garza, a former resident of Silver Lakes, CA, taught 12 years in the Victorville, CA, area, and said he was thrilled, after applying for the Lone Pine High School principal's job, and “Fortunate to hear a 'Yes,'” to his hiring in the Eastern Sierra. Garza grew up in Lone Pine High School’s southeastern Arizona, and noted he understood about being in a new principal, Joseph Garza. small town and rural area. OBITUARY Virginia Ruth MacLeod (1943-2019) Virginia Ruth MacLeod was born on November 12, 1943 in San Rafael , CA and passed away on February 2, 2019 from rare neurological disease. Virginia is survived by her husband Joe; brother Roome Paget and sister in law Vickie; daughter Ychelle Arbuckle and husband Clifton; daughter Sue Dishion and husband Deston; grandson Reuben Bradley and wife Whitney; grandson Dustin Tillemans; grandson Dylan Dishion and wife Melia; grandson Zayne Dishion; great grandchildren JoJo, Eme, Piper and Corbin Bradley. Virginia and Joe loved the Owens Valley and moved to Big Pine in 1976. Where she enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, wooding and gardening. Virginia had a great career working of the County of Inyo, she retired with 27 years of service. Later in her life, she enjoyed hiking with “the girls”. There will be a service at the Big Pine Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 9th. There will be a gathering after the service at the Big Pine Town Hall.

Callaghan plays chef with Bellafina

(photo by Benoit) by Danny Brewer Anybody that likes to cook or eat understands one of the key things to producing a delectable dish is quality ingredients. Put good stuff in and you have a chance at a piece de resistance. Thoroughbred trainer Simon Callaghan has a chance to be a five star chef in 2019. The Cambridge, England native is blessed with a real Quality ingredient in a talented threeyear old daughter of Quality Road. With eyes on the Kentucky Oaks as the target for his cuisine, Callaghan is eager for the opportunity to whip a little something up with Bellafina as his main ingredient on that big stage. “Races like the Kentucky Oaks are why you are in this game,” says Callaghan. “Running on days like that is why you go to work every day. We will take things one race at a time with Bellafina, but obviously that is the place we would like to be on the first Friday in May.” Bellafina has given her conditioner good reason to believe she can be the magic ingredient. Four impressive wins and a second in six career starts has her currently sitting in the third spot (22) on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard. Her only finish out of the money was a fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on November 2 at Churchill Downs. She followed that however, with a lip-smackin’ romp in the Santa Ynez in her first start as a three-year old. Winning the seven furlong event by a widening 8 ½ lengths, Bellafina looked “We thought going into the Santa Ynez she had a chance to do something special,” says Callaghan of the Kaleem Shah owned filly. “The Breeders Cup was not a true reflection of who she is. I think Bellafina has all the tools to be a great racehorse. I think she is the best filly I have ever trained.” Having grown up in the sport, Callaghan is no stranger to talented Thoroughbreds. A son of an English trainer (Neville), the Southern California based conditioner has made his mark in the states with talented turf runners like Slim Shady and good dirt runners in Moonshine Memories and Firing Line to name a few. His prized filly has a lot of things to like right now, but her continuing improvement has Callaghan really excited about the future. The likely next stop is the grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita on February 9. Run at a 1 mile distance on the main track, Callaghan sees this as part of his master cooking plan with the Santa Anita Oaks as the final stop before the Kentucky Oaks.

James “Jim” Tatum, age 60, passed away on January 27th. He was surrounded by family at his home in Bishop as he concluded his courageous battle with cancer. Jim, a lifetime Bishop resident, was an incredible husband, father, brother, and community contributor. His love of the local community was evident in all of his professional and personal endeavors where he always went above and beyond to do for others. His accomplishments were numerous across his career: as a rancher, in his 20-year tenure as the CEO of the TriCounty Fairgrounds, as the Inyo County Deputy Public Works Director, and most recently as the Bishop City Administrator. His generous and make-it-happen spirit could also be seen in his roles as a Bishop Little League and Bishop Union High School Baseball Coach, a member of the local school board, and the beloved “tractor man” at the California High School Rodeo State Finals and other fair arena events. He was also known for his witty and playful sense of humor, optimistic attitude, and that unmistakeable whistle while he walked. His impact on the community will be enduring, but his presence will be sorely missed. Jim’s loving family will continue to carry forward his memory, values, and commitment to community. They include his wife, Donna Tatum; daughter and son-in-law Kelsie Tatum Martinez and Jaime Martinez; son and future daughter-in-law Keith Tatum and Sara Galligher; brother and sister-in-law Von and Jayne Tatum; brother Lee Tatum; his family inlove, Polly, Larry, and Robert Renfro and Linda Holcomb; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Betty Tatum of Bishop. A Celebration of Life will be held for Jim on Sunday, February 10th at 1pm at the TriCounty Fairgrounds in Bishop. God’s Word - Your Word “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John: 1.1 Before there was anything there was the Word. The Word was spoken and form appeared. The form conforms to the exact word spoken. Negative words deliver a negative form and positive words bring a positive form. The form itself is niether positive or negative, however; the form generates a feeling response either positive or negative from the speaker’s perspective. Two or more individuals could speak the same word and have very different results. The medical profession is really just beginning to understand that we are all different. The cookie cutter approach to diagnostic medicine doesn’t work. There is so much confusion about the evaluation of cholesterol, and which food is good or bad for you, is in question. Likewise; my words and your words could produce a totally different result. The events, circumstances and people I attract into my life, most likely would not be the same as you would attract into yours. The bottom line is as Ernest Holmes said, “Nothing happens to you, it happens through you.” Through an honest introspection, which I warn you, can be painful, you will find that there is nobody to blame, nothing to cry about, because you are just experiencing the words you have used. Forms come from words and words come from thoughts. How you utilize the One Mind will determine your experience. Experience, which comes with your reaction to the form, can be altered by changing the originating word. We are dealing with Mind and Mind only. There is only One Mind and that Mind is God’s Mind, and we are all using it. We call it Creative Mind, and our use initiates the creative forces within to produce what we have asked for. God is not a person; nor does He have a personality. The Bible tells us that is God’s pleasure to give us the Kingdom. Your kingdom and my kingdom will be different. Like the doctors, we must get out of the cookie cutter mentality and recognize our individuality. If you desire to be loved, and who doesn’t, your words should reflect love. You cannot prosper by claiming poverty. Words counted with God and words count with you. There is no idle word, they all count. The old saying is: “Be careful what you ask for, you may get ii.” God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
