A Winter Picnic with Frosty the Snowman Getting out and picnicking in winter isn’t something most folks do... but you can By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The weather is chilly, and wintry, but the snow isn't that deep. You can drive to go sledding up any number of canyons nearby, but most folks don't think about packing a picnic lunch or barbecue in January. However, you will find your favorite forest spots open for the day, if you can get to them, and bringing along some warm food, friends, family and neighbors might be just the sort of outing you've been missing for years. Winter picnics take a bit more preparation than spring, summer or fall events, and everyone has to have warm layers of clothing to enjoy the extended time outdoors. But, toasting marshmallows for s'mores (a camp fire or barbecue treat, made of a marshmallow sandwiched between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate) is surely more heart-warming, literally, in winter than summer.
Enjoy an afternoon in a local forest, and create a new winter outing by bringing along warm soups, hot chocolate or coffee, a portable stove to make grilled cheese sandwiches, and your spirit of adventure.
Start simple. Start early in the day, since the sun goes down earlier in winter, thus making it colder longer. Start at home for most of the prep work, and take your goodies in the same ice chests you use during summer. Difference is...ice chests will keep your food warm from the cold outside. Plan on having soups (like tomato basil and chunky clam chowder), and making hot sandwiches, like grilled cheese or a patty melt on the side. Using a portable butane cooking stove allows you to take your gourmet grilling skills to new levels, and preparing the sandwiches ahead of time gives you the freedom to unwrap the items, and grill immediately. The Inyo National Forest has plenty of places for a winter picnic.

A winter picnic with Frosty the Snowman isn't something that everyone thinks about doing in January. But, once the snow stops falling, the roads are cleared, and the sun comes out, people can experience a different side of winter in our big backyard. Photos by The Hired Pen
Warm hot chocolate, coffee, tea, apple cider never tasted better than at a winter picnic, and sturdy mugs or cups are the best way to keep things warm. Plates and eating utensils can be disposed of in the trash bags you will bring along, and extra trash bags are a good idea for wet snow gear too. Bring some big old towels for drying off kids and dogs, and remember water for everyone is important when you are playing outdoors for a while. Remember to bring along plenty of blankets for people to cozy up with by a camp fire, or barbecue, and having a tarp to put down on the snow can make it less slushy for the camp site. Chairs can be placed on the tarp, and even a couple of the chairs can be used to dry wet mittens, gloves or socks. All of the fire safety precautions must be respected, and a fire permit (free from the US Forest Service offices) is required for adults (18 years and older) if you are having a camp fire outside a designated camp ground fire ring (such as dispersed camping). People of all ages love to play in the snow, and if there's a hot meal to look forward to, the energy levels stay high for everyone. Kids can practice rolling snow into big balls for a snowman, and nature provides the ingredients for arms, a hat, and you can bring along the pieces of charcoal for the eyes and mouth. Prime time for snow play, between the hours of noon and four, when the sun is at its highest points in the sky and it is the warmest. Practice your winter picnicking often for best results!

Make planning to pay for college a New Year’s Resolution (StatePoint) When it comes to financial resolutions, a new survey suggests that creating a plan to pay for college should be top of mind for more families. Only 54 percent of parents are comfortable with their plan to pay for their child’s college education, according to a College Ave Students Loan survey conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights. As you solidify your New Year’s resolutions, consider the following financial strategies: • Apply for reputable scholarships and grants early and often. One easy one to apply for is the College Ave Student Loans $1,000 Monthly Scholarship Sweepstakes. • Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if your family has a high income. Doing so is the only way to access the big pool of financial aid available from the U.S. Department of Education, which awards over $120 billion annually in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study programs and loans. What’s more, states and some individual schools use it to determine aid packages as well. • Ask family members to gift or contribute toward the cost of education. • Fine-tune the college application process to save money. For example, zero in on state schools for in-state tuition, or schools where your child’s grades and SAT scores are above average to boost the likelihood of receiving merit aid. • Ninety-one percent of parents currently help or plan to help their child pay for college and 75 percent of parents expect their child to help pay, which means that for most families, a candid discussion about what you can afford and how much you expect him or her to contribute is essential. • Financial aid letters arrive in the spring. Review this, and if your expected family contribution (EFC) is more than you can afford, reach out to the financial aid office to discuss. • If needed, borrow federal loans in the student’s name first. They carry special benefits, such as public service forgiveness and income-driven repayment options not typically available on private loans. • When federal loans in the student’s name don’t cover you fully, consider a private student loan or parent loan with a good interest rate. You may also need to find a cosigner with strong credit. With the pre-qualification tool offered by College Ave Student loans, you can find out if your credit qualifies for a College Ave loan and what rates to expect before applying. Pre-qualification does not affect your credit score, making this a convenient way to get your ducks in a row. To learn more, visit CollegeAveStudentLoans.com. “Families would be wise to prioritize their plan for financing college so they are not taken by surprise when the first tuition bill is received,â€? says Joe DePaulo, CEO and cofounder of College Ave Student Loans. “Knowing where the money is going to come from is essential.â€?

The Sky is the Limit Ernest Holmes wrote, “Throughout our own individualized subjective mind we contact the Law of the Universe and make use of the Mind of God. Our conscious mind is limited, but the Subjective part of us, being Universal, is without limit. This Limitless Medium we may use for whatsoever purpose we will. If we use it for destructive purposes we shall bring destruction upon ourselves. The Universe is fool proof. But there is no liability in using any creative power if we use it constructively. Holmes also said, “Man’s mind is the Mind of God functioning at the level of man’s understanding of his place in the Universe. Essentially, Holmes is telling us how much power to direct our life, and control conditions we potentially have. We can maintain conditions as they are, limit their influence or elevate them to a new level. We are dealing with Mind and our use of it All physicality begins with the thoughts that brought them into being. Our thought life tells subjective mind what we desire by the nature of our thought. Our words and actions added to our thoughts are a dynamite combination in determining how our life will unfold. The formulation of our thoughts arise from our inner beliefs secluded in the subconscious. Jesus, citing the Law of Mind, stated, “It is done unto you as you believe. Your belief is personal to you, even if there many others with the same belief, yours is unique. You are experiencing your beliefs with every passing day. Some of our beliefs were formulated even before we were conceived, and some are of recent vintage, because the Universal Subjective has all of the beliefs to draw on. However, we hold the key to navigate through this vast depository we call the subjective mind. Being aware that this is the creative aspect of mind, we can consciously direct what is being produced. Judging by the amount of health professionals, clinics and hospitals in our cities, it is safe to assume that there is an awful lot of belief in failing health and injury out there. We give thanks for the many dedicated medical professions whose expertise and compassion works on our minds and bodies. It is our job to work on our beliefs. We know that beliefs in lack, loss and limitation lead to lack, loss and limitation. Likewise; beliefs in sin, sickness and death lead to more of the same. In this new year, it is time to input new or revised directions to the subconscious mind. At this point I must warn you; this takes courage and complete dedication for this to make any difference. If you desire a healthy body, then claim it right now. Health is normal, natural and right. Rid yourself of the abnormal by maintaining an atmosphere of health. Let your thoughts and words confirm your health. Health will be yours as you maintain your conscious direction. Sickness will whither and die as you stay on health. Prosperity and happiness are subject to the same treatment as health. Claim them and never look back as poverty and misery fade from view. Life, lived by you is subject to what you believe about it. You can override those old limiting beliefs by a new and vital declaration of peace, power and plenty. Goodness, Truth and Beauty are yours Right Now! Claim it and live it. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
