Manor Market’s 50th Anniversary

Manor Market celebrated its 50th anniversary on February 9, and current and former employees, along with the entire Oney family, turned out to congratulate each other.

The Oney family celebrated the 50th anniversary of Manor Market, their family-owned and operated grocery store. From left: Haley Oney, Cindy Oney, Dee Ann Oney, Brenda Oney, Troy Oney, Susie Oney, and Kyle Oney.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—It was a snowy, cold, and blustery weekend, February 9-10, but a large number of Eastern Sierra residents, friends, neighbors, families, employees, and visitors attended Manor Market's 50th anniversary. The Oneys, the whole fam-dang-a-ly, passed into the history books, with its half-a-century stature of being our local, neighborhood market. And, Manor Market, in Bishop, CA, is a true, small town, frontier-like, family business. Troy and Susie Oney watched on as a third generation of their kin, Kyle and Dee Ann's families, and the community family congratulated each other. So many employees, or Manor Market alumni, after 50 years, too. There were smiles on everyone's face. Manor Market opened in its present location on January 20, 1969, Troy and Susie "were ahead of their time" in many ways, Kyle has said in past interviews. Manor Market's charm and progressive ideas include locally grown produce (the Oney family has kept a large garden for 50 years), local brews (Mammoth Brewing), health foods, and gourmet items. And, the Oneys give people a local outlet for their products. It's just one of the ways the store has remained a vital part of the Bishop area. "We've always felt it's important to give back to the community. It's a symbiotic relationship,” Kyle has stated. The Oneys have all worked in the market, and once upon a time, Dee Ann was the “Cookie Manager,” and Kyle was the “Candy Manager,” Dee Ann noted. Troy and Susie Oney have 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

From left: John Oney, former owner of Barbecue Bill's Restaurant, in Bishop, CA, celebrated Manor Market's 50th anniversary, with his brother, Troy Oney. Photos by The Hired Pen

Snow, on the Road, again By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Now is the time to get prepared for the next series of snow storms approaching the Eastern Sierra, and if your vehicle isn't a four-wheel drive (4 X 4) or all-wheel drive (AWD) car or truck, with snow and mud tires (M + S or M / S), you need to have properly fitting chains to drive on snowy roadways. All vehicles in snow country need to carry one set of chains for the drive wheels, even if you do have a 4 X 4 or all-wheel drive car or truck. Failing to carry your chains or not having any, will result in being turned around at the chain-up areas, where highway patrol checks vehicles. There are law enforcement fines in- Carry chains or traction devices in your vehicle in volved for not using chains. And, if chains are winter in the mountains, and be familiar with the used on US 395, or other state roads, chains chain-up requirements for the roadways. must be used when driving in town, and city Photo by The Hired Pen streets. Chain Requirements R1- means chains, or traction devices on all vehicles not 4 X 4 or AWD with M / S tires. Chains go on the drive axle. R2- Carry chains for one set of drive wheels. R3- Chains required on all vehicles. No exceptions! An “unprecedented” R3 snow restriction was in place on February 5, when a blizzard caught travelers and Caltrans' snow plowing crews by surprise. US Highway 395 was closed at Mammoth Lakes, and the road did not open until 2 PM that afternoon. Make sure you have approved chains for some vehicle brands; special chains are required and you'll void a warranty if the chains aren't correct. Practice putting new chains on in dry conditions. When installing chains, pull way off the road, and watch for other vehicles pulling in and out of chain-up areas. If you hire a chain installer, remember they do not work for Caltrans, and you should get their badge number, and a receipt. Don't forget to tip them. Driving speeds are greatly reduced in chain-up road conditions, and 25 to 30 mph is the speed limit. However, all drivers are advised to remember that the highway patrol considers “the speed limit is what is reasonable and safe based on conditions.” Also remember when driving with chains on to avoid tire spinning, driving on dry pavement, hitting curbs or gutters or potholes, and braking hard, as these types of driving behaviors will damage or break your chains. Studded tires are allowed on California highways between November 1 and April 30, but studded tires are “not in lieu of chains,” when chains are required. Always check weather alerts and traffic messages before driving in the winter months in the mountains. If the road says, CLOSED, please turn around and stay away from dangerous conditions. More driving information can be found by calling 511, or Caltrans Quickmaps, at www.dot.ca.gov or by calling 800-427-7623. In Nevada, road conditions can be found by calling 511, or 877-687-6237.

Meaning so much to so many

Eastern Sierra residents pay respects to Jim Tatum (1958-2019)

Jim Tatum's Celebration of Life brought out most of the Eastern Sierra's residents on February 10, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. The City of Bishop Fire Department had a special flag display for Tatum's celebration of life at the Fairgrounds.

we should do.” Then, Thomson added, “Just like that, it happened.” Jim managed the fairgrounds for 20 years, and was a hands-on boss, who knew just about everyone in Bishop, most of the 4-H Livestock and FFA participants, and he could usually tell which animal belonged to which kid, too. The Tatums are well-known in the ranching world, and the family has raised prized ranch horses. There weren't too many things Jim wasn't very acquainted with in the Owens Valley, and the Eastern Sierra. Jim also worked as the City of Bishop Administrator toward the end of his career, and he also was the County of Inyo Deputy Public Works Director. Equally as poignant, Jim's children, Kelsie and Keith talked about the ever-lasting values Jim just seemed to live, whether it was fishing, ranching, coaching Little League, or driving a big tractor around the fairgrounds' arenas. It is safe to say, he meant so much to so many. And, when all is said and done, “love is everything,” Donna Tatum, Jim's wife told all of us.

By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—It seemed very apropos that a Celebration of Jim Tatum's life well-lived should be held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, and so it wasn't surprising to see the hundreds of residents, family members, friends, work colleagues, and neighbors in the standing-room-only crowd. While the weather outside was wintry, on the inside, there were many heartwarming stories about Jim; a man well-liked, a life-long resident of Bishop, and a valuable Eastern Sierra citizen. Hardly a dry-eye could be found in the almost totally silent audience, as many personal memories of Jim were shared by former colleagues and family. Tawni Thomson, currently the Executive Director of the Bishop Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, once worked with Jim at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. Thomson reminisced about Jim's get-it-done attitude, and said that he energized the idea of the Fair, and pie contests, and what would happen after Jim said, “I know what

Pictured: Dr. Leo Pisculli, Dr. Bennett Pafford, Randy Van Tassell and Ed Nahin. Photo by Pat Nahin At the Rotary Club of Bishop’s February 5th meeting, Randy Van Tassell inducted Dr. Bennett Pafford into the Club. Dr. Leo Pisculli was Dr. Pafford’s sponsor. Being a Rotarian isn’t new to Bennett as he was a member of the Rotary Club in Modoc county. He enjoyed helping in community activities and plans to participate in The Rotary Club of Bishop’s many programs in the community and international service. Dr. Pafford served as a Navy Corpsman (medic) with the Marines, then later, after completing officer qualifications, as a platoon commander for the Navy SEALS. Dr. Pafford retired from the SEAL Teams in 2000 after 20 years of military service and then enrolled in Atlanta’s nationally ranked Emory University for a Master’s in Public Health. Taking advantage of his prior experience in conflict areas, on graduation he worked in international disaster response with various governmental and non-governmental organizations helping those displaced by fighting in Iraq, Liberia and over 20 other countries. Fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a physician, he attended medical school in Tennessee, graduating with honors, following with residency training at UC Davis in Sacramento and George Washington University in Washington D.C. He is now a board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist, skilled at diagnosing and treating a broad variety of illnesses and disorders in adults and children. He specializes in geriatrics. When needed, Dr. Pafford will make house calls. Dr. Pafford moved to Bishop to enjoy the Eastern Sierra Mountain outdoor activities such as trail running, mountain and road biking and rock climbing in our local mountains. Pafford Health is located at 686 West Line Street, Bishop. Call 760-873-4373 for further information or to make an appointment.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Your Word Has Power Dr. Joseph Murphey in his book, The Power of the Subconscious Mind tells of a little girl with a sore throat and a rasping cough started saying, “I now am whole and complete. My throat feels fine and my breathing is easy.” She didn’t say it just once; she repeated it over and over, and within an hour, she was clear of all obstructions to her health. This should come as no surprise to those who know the power of belief. Jesus said, “When you pray believing, you shall have what you believed.” The little girl’s affirmation of health was tantamount to a believing prayer. She spoke herself to wholeness. She consciously spoke to the subconscious mind, which as Thomas Troward says is a blind force, not knowing, only doing. She didn’t give the negatives to rise up and stymie her belief. This works the same for everybody, however; a child’s simple faith can’t compare with the complicated mind set of most mature people. Perhaps, that is why Jesus told us to become as a little child. Most adults, when experiencing a new pain or discomfort; do not have a ready affirmation to counter their thoughts about the unwelcomed guest; instead, they speculate which disease or sickness does the pain act as a precursor to something much more serious. Many tell others, “They are coming down with something.” The girl would not accept the sickness, and came up with something If you doubt that the word has Power, consider what happened when God said, “Let there be light.” As we are all made in the image and after the likeness of God; we all have that same nature. We can talk our way into something, or we can talk our way out of it. The choice is ours. Considering full hospitals and rising prescription drug cost, there are an awful .lot of people that have made the choice. The unfortunate thing about it is that they don’t know that they have a choice. It is not that they knowingly choose disease, but they have accepted it as a chance we all have. Make no mistake, illness and injury are not normal, natural or right, and we don’t need top accept them as such. Who was listening to the little girl? Was she talking to God or some power outside of herself? God works for us by working through us. She refused to accept the condition and invoked that power within to maintain health and delegate the illness to the nothingness it was. What is it you desire in your life? Perhaps, you have a bucket list, or just a simple, but good life. Speak it out. Of course, you might do it behind closed doors, or your neighbors might think you are nuts. The Power of your word has gone before you. If we want something different; change the words to reflect that. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
