Not just a bar... 1903 Taphouse and Company

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Main Street, Bishop, CA—Chris and Sarah Taylor love Bishop, CA. No doubt. And to prove it, their newest Main Street Bishop business, 1903 Taphouse and Company, is inspired by Bishop's incorporation, May 6, 1903, as the only incorporated town in Inyo County. The couple own McMurry's bar, which is now 1903 Taphouse and Company, as of November 6, 2020. The Taylors were young, 27-year-olds when they took over McMurry's in 2011, says Sarah. A decade later, Chris and Sarah took stock of what was happening to businesses due to the pandemic, and they decided to get clever and creative. The new business emerged from the thoughts. And, Chris says, “we wanted our employees to be able to go back to work.” The staff is thrilled to be working again, and bartenders / staff Jessie Rodriguez, Mikaela Torres, Elizabeth Scott, Esmeralda Morales, Joe Vega, Jeff Calderon, and Sabrina Membreno join Sarah and Chris with the daily operations of the business. Paying homage or tribute to Bishop, the Taylors hometown, was also important. “We wanted to incorporate Bishop as a whole,” for the theme, says Sarah. The atmosphere inside will be as important as the 10 beers on tap, and the gourmet food being served to the customers. Eventually, when people are able to come in freely, sit down, and have a conversation, the Taylors hope customers will feel “an immediate connection with Bishop,” Sarah says. The interior is being renovated to reflect “what Bishop looked like” during the turn of the century, with old images of the town being framed. Sabrina Membreno, an artist and Taphouse staff, is painting an elaborate mural down the back entry hallway, and its all about the Main Street scenes from the early 1900s. The future seating arrangements will encourage people to enjoy craft beers, a bit of local culture, uncommon menu items, and be a social setting for adults. You won't find these menu items on any other menu in Bishop, assures Danny Roderique, the chef of the magical food being served. Culinary school trained and bringing 20-plus years of experience, Roderique says he's fixing dishes he's prepared over the years at different restaurants, and adding his working experience with

Chris and Sarah Taylor, of Bishop, CA, love their hometown so much, they decided to name their new eating and drinking establishment “1903 Taphouse and Company,” in honor of Bishop's date of incorporation (May 6, 1903) as the only incorporated town in Inyo County, CA.

many chefs. Roderique had expressed an interest in helping the Taylors with a restaurant many years ago, and Chris says when the 1903 Taphouse and Company took shape, Roderique was asked to come and be the chef. When you look at menu items, online, or in photographs, you can tell the art of cooking and presentation are present in the quality and appearance of the menu items. The dishes being served are diverse and unusual, and Chris notes, “a few of the items are off-the-wall things.” For example? I ask. Lobster, lamb, veal and BBQ chicken sliders, or Mac and Cheese with Gruyere and Cheddar cheese, or a portabella sandwich, or how about the beer battered Mahi tacos, or apple cabbage slaw, or their special, very popular 50/50 burger (lamb and roast beef, with mint aioli, goat cheese, arugula and caramelized onions) and the lobster roll, served with the

There are also tap beers, bottled beers, and wines to choose from, and Sarah says, now it's legal in California for you to take your cocktails to go (21 years of age and older) or be delivered to your door...another first during pandemic Lobster roll anyone? Workshop Details Inyo County Grant Program for Local Non-Profits INYO COUNTY, CA, January 11, 2020 – A digital workshop will be held on January 13 at 3:00 p.m. to provide information about the new Inyo County Community Resiliency Grant program for local nonprofits. The county-funded grant program will provide up to $10,000 to local nonprofit organizations that play an important role in supporting our local economy, improving quality of life in Inyo County, and addressing unmet needs of those in our community most severely impacted by COVID-19. Inyo County recognizes that these nonprofit entities have continued to provide services with significant reductions in revenue due to the pandemic, so during adoption of the Inyo County 2020-21 budget, the Board of Supervisors allocated $100,000 of the County General Fund to support local economic and community resiliency, and to offset COVID-19 related economic hardships. “This is a new grant program, but it shares some similarities to the recent county REVIVE grant program that assisted local small businesses, and the county’s longstanding Community Project Sponsorship Program that provides grants for community projects, events and programs,” stated Leslie Chapman, Inyo County Assistant CAO. “The upcoming digital workshop will help inform interested nonprofit groups about details of the new, Community Resiliency Grant Program, and will provide information about the grant program’s guidelines, eligibility requirements, and application process.” The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, January 13 at 3:00 p.m. via Zoom. To attend, participants can log onto the Zoom meeting at http://bit.ly/IC-CRG , or use the link on the county website, www.inyocounty.us . The workshop is open to the public and will also include a question and answer session to further clarify how the Community Resiliency Grant Program will be implemented. Individual, one-time grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to successful nonprofit applicants that were financially impacted by COVID-19, including loss of program revenues and increased expenses. To be eligible to apply for the grants, nonprofit organizations must meet these minimum qualifications and conditions: • Losses must have occurred from March 1, 2020, through Dec. 30, 2020 • Must adequately demonstrate that funding is necessary due to the financial impacts of COVID-19 and will be used to mitigate these impacts • Must be a legally organized Nonprofit Entity under Internal Revenue Code Section 501 • Must primarily serve the residents of Inyo County • Must directly provide services or goods that are available to, or benefit, the general public • Cannot be exclusively engaged in lobbying • Cannot be primarily engaged in distributing funds to other organizations or individuals • Cannot use grant funds for an inherently religious purpose (see guidelines for exceptions) • Cannot be any of the following: An educational institution; a social, recreational, sports or booster club; a private foundation.
