Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly

January 16 – 22, 2020

Community and Personal Safety 2020 Being a good witness and better awareness can prevent crimes from happening By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—For crimes to occur, individuals or groups must have desires, skills, and opportunities presented to them, which make it more likely they will be successful in committing the crimes. Assailants, not the victims, pick the time, place, and fashion or how the attack will take place. Your mind is on keeping safe and alive. Law enforcements' basic goals are reducing crime, improving the quality of our lives, creating community and police relationships, and arresting and prosecuting those individuals or groups who are responsible for committing crimes. Everyone in a community is a part of crime prevention. Whether you protect yourself from a strong arm or armed robbery, or whether you are just a better witness to what's going on in town or your neighborhood, or place of business, or home. Predators / criminals are looking for weaknesses in victims, law enforcement, and judicial systems.

Be Confident, Be Aware, and Don't Dawdle Around Predators / criminals are opportunistic, and look for the easy prey / victims. Career criminals / predators can size up a person in less than 10 seconds, and decide if it's a potential victim. Some clues: Are you fixated on your cell phone? Are you easily distracted while walking since that cell phone never leaves your view? Do you walk, run, or travel outside with earplugs or headphones on listening to music? Do you walk by groups of people or individuals and never make eye contact with them, since you have your cell phone glued to your attention? Do you leave your vehicle running

in a gas station parking lot to run in and get milk? Do you leave your vehicle unlocked at the post office, and run in to get mail, but end up visiting with three neighbors? Do people, other than neighbors, hang out around your kids' bus stop? Would you know your immediate neighbors by sight? Are your Facebook posts being monitored by others who have breached your privacy settings? Are you sending friends Instagram posts telling everyone you are on vacation (including would-be burglars)? Do you have abandoned buildings or storage units on properties, or unused travel trailers, which might be stashing points or crash pads for drug traffickers? Personal protection also includes being confident in your walk; get to your destination SEE SAFETY CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

with purpose, and don't dawdle around. Look confident and capable, not scared or distracted. Keep your car and house keys ready, don't fish for them in your bags. Avoid parking beside vans, with easily slide-able doors, which can make getting snatched or having your things snatched easier. Be aware! Always be on your guard, and trust your gut / instincts. Change up routines and traveling routes. Be aware! Be better able to detect fraudulent behaviors. Remember the face is the index of a person's mind, and increase your witness potential, thus decreasing criminal opportunists / predators. If you are attacked by a predator, do everything possible to stay at the first scene. Scream. Fight dirty, nothing is off-limits when you are fighting for your life. Being taken to a secondary location could be where the real harm is going to happen. Learn to use your car alarm as a warning or to scare off would-be predators, or to alert law enforcement to your location. Criminal opportunity is accomplished by a lack of witnesses. Increase witness potential, decrease criminal opportunity. Joe Pecsi teaches individuals in Inyo and Mono Counties, through STTARR, concealed carry weapons permit classes. He sees more than 100 individuals a year in classes (new CCW permits or renewals), and he notes in the class description, “The Standard CCW permit does not teach you to defend yourself or your family. This class will better prepare you to face the threats you are likely to encounter, and if needed, provide you with a recertification for a CCW.” He says most of the individuals with CCWs “carry a firearm to protect themselves and loved ones.” Inyo and Mono Counties have the highest, per-capita, numbers of CCW permits in California, according to Pecsi. The eight-hour course also includes state requirements, a background check, an interview, and obtaining permits requires the discretion of Inyo and Mono Counties' law enforcement, and police chiefs. Pecsi emphasizes, “Be a good witness, and don't try to step in or intervene [in a crime scene situation].”

BISHOP CHURCH OF RELIGIOUS SCIENCE

Rev. Freda Lindsay, Minister Rev. Dr. Walt Sharer Sunday Service: 10 am Meditation: 9:40 am Wednesday 5:30 pm: Prayer Group Practitioners: Rev. Dr. Juanella Evans Science of the Mind: Philosophy, a faith, a way of Life. Use the teachings each day to enrich your life.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

A Purpose, A Plan, A Procedure What is it that you want out of life? Is it wealth, health or happiness, or is it a good job, a good spouse and good children? Everybody is unique and different. Some things you may desire would be an enigma to me, and visa-versa. What is of value to you and what is it you might be willing to give up in order to have the things in your life that you desire? The preceding questions are just a few of the questions we need to analyze as we seek to move into a fuller expression of life. Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” I for one want that abundant life, and I think you do too. Nothing happens to you unless it first happens through you. Each of us is in charge, not separate from God, but unified with God. Our Declaration of Principles states, “God is personal to all who feel the indwelling presence.” God is equally present every where. The totality of God is present at every given point, which means all of God is within you, and equally, all of God is within everybody else. All the Power in the Universe is there for your use. Nothing has been withheld from you. You are vital, your thoughts are vital, your words are vital, as are your desires and even your fears are vital, especially when your life course is concerned. Let us begin to look on what we want out of life. I will begin by sharing my story: not all of it, but a mere sample from my many years of seeking the good and only good promised by God. While I had a quasi-religious upbringing, I didn’t have a relationship with God. Like so many others, God was in Heaven, may or may not hear my prayers, and whether he answered them was anybodies guess. Reading the Bible I found God could be mean. After all, He wiped out humankind, except for Noah and his family. I made sure I attended church because of the story in the Bible where some were stoned for not attending. God forbid, literally, if you did some work on Sunday. I’d like to say I didn’t believe all that stuff, but it was with me anyway. I decided long ago that I wanted a relationship with a loving God, a helpful God and a God of compassion. I turned the corner on that angry and mean God as I began my search for a God I could respect and cherish. I was guided to a church I had never heard about before. It was the First Church of Religious Science in Huntington Park, California. In that church I found the answers I had sought. I never found one thing I couldn’t embrace. I was empowered to know God in me, as me, is me. I was so taken with the church and its teachings that I stayed for over twenty five years. When I moved to Big Pine I found the same teachings in the Bishop Church of Religious Science. When I found God I found love. Love indeed makes the world go around, at least, my world. None of this would have happened if I didn’t desire it to be so. Desire demonstrates! DE-Sire (of the father). Keep your mind stayed on the good and very good. Avoid the negativity which seems to pervade the news. Praying without ceasing means you cease the doubts and know the Truth. That Truth is that you can have what ever you desire as long as you let it be. The Purpose is to find the God that fulfills you, the Plan is to unify that same God, and the Procedure is to live it with everything you have got. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
