A Tribute to Robert L. (Pete) Doughtie April 8, 1941 - January 10, 2019

This world just lost an awesome man... Patrick Doughtie My dad, Pete Doughtie! His last months have been puzzling to the medical world and it’s been frustrating, especially of late. He’s free now and I’m sure grandson Tyler was part of his welcoming committee into heaven and, as I’m writing this, he’s being given the most awesome tour! My dad was the one I always looked up to, admired and wanted to be like. There are many things I did, or decided, in life because of him. I played football and was a running back because he was. I joined the army because he did. I wanted 4 kids (1 shy) because that’s what he had. I liked being the funny guy, because he was. I did some crazy and questionable things, because of stories he told me of what he did. But, I also have good manners, morals, values, love of God, family and country and respect for others, because that’s what he and my mom taught me... and I wanted to be like him. Sounds a little silly, I know. But that’s what happens when you have a good man and father, he inspires his kids to be good. (Same goes for the opposite too, I guess) I will forever cherish his wisdom and advice, his laughter and humor, his passion for truth and this great nation and his love of life and people. I will miss you dearly, until we meet again. I love you, Dad!

Robert L. (Pete) Doughtie, age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 in the Nashville, VA Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He was born in Norfolk, VA on April 8, 1941. He lived and grew up in Suffolk, VA where he met his wife, Kaye Sadler, in first grade. Their first date was in the fourth grade to a Saturday afternoon matinee; a fact Kaye’s mom knew nothing about. Although they dated other people in high school, this original connection formed in elementary school was never broken and they often flirted with each other without others knowing. They married in 1961 after he enlisted in the Army, a post he served for five years. He began working in the newspaper industry in 1965 after being discharged from the Army. Pete and Kaye moved to California in January of 1970, living in that state for the next 30 years. He worked at the Blade Tribune in Oceanside, California as an ad salesman, classified manager and later became ad director at the Santa Maria Times for two years. In 1983 he was approached by Ron and Deane Funk, former owners of the Santa Monica Outlook to move from Southern California to Bishop to be the Inyo Register’s co-publisher and general manager. At the time, that included Chalfant Press print shop where the newspaper was printed, and another weekly paper in Mammoth Lakes. The Inyo Register soon went from a weekly to three days a week newspaper. After the paper was sold, he and Kaye moved to Nashville, TN in 1998 and soon after to Murfreesboro,

TN where he began the Rutherford County Reader in 2000. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Earl Doughtie, mother, Mary Elizabeth Britt and grandson, Patrick Tyler Doughtie. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Kaye Sadler Doughtie and four sons – R. Keith Doughtie of Martinez, CA; Patrick Lee Doughtie and wife, Kimberly of Murfreesboro, TN; Lee Michael Doughtie and his wife Michele of Murfreesboro, TN; and Jay Alison Doughtie of Murfreesboro, TN; sister, Ann Grandy of Chesapeake, VA, and brother, Bill Doughtie of Virginia; Grandchildren – Crystal Brown and David Doughtie of Antioch, TN, Mason and Jackson Doughtie of Murfreesboro, TN, Brendan and Ryan Doughtie and Ethan Pittman of Murfreesboro, TN; Emma, Nathan and Ashlyn Doughtie of Martinez, CA and three great granddaughters. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6-8pm at the Murfreesboro Funeral Home, 145 Innsbrooke Blvd., Murfreesboro, TN 37128. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 3145 N Thompson Lane, Murfreesboro, TN 37129. The service will be officiated by Pastor Darrel Whaley and Pastor Charles Ray. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to St. Jude’s Hospital in the names of Pete and Tyler Doughtie.

Point-in-Time Count of homeless to be conducted The Eastern Sierra Continuum of Care (CoC), a coalition of human service providers addressing homeless issues, along with many partner agencies, will conduct its annual Point-in-Time Count of homeless individuals and families on Thursday, January 24, 2019 in Inyo, Mono and Alpine Counties. During the early evening hours, staff and volunteers will visit campgrounds, parking lots, encampments and other places in the Eastern Sierra to find and survey people living outside. Nonprofit and faithbased service providers will also count the number of people that are temporarily residing in emergency shelter because they are without a home. The surveys are completely anonymous and confidential. Information from the surveys will shed light on the extent and nature of homelessness in the region. The Homeless Count is a HUD requirement for the local CoC funding process, which brings over $300 million in federal funding to California each year to serve people experiencing homelessness. If you have any questions about the Count or would like to volunteer to help with the survey, please contact Karen Mansfield at 760-873-8557, extension 102, or kmansfield@imaca.net.

Hillbilly Horse Awards for 2018 by Danny Brewer We have once again circled the sun successfully and that means… it’s time for the Hillbilly Horse Awards. The envelope please… THE HOSE PIPE WATER- Remember when you were a kid in the summer and your momma told you to get outside and play. Bottled water had not been invented yet and you sure as heck didn’t have money for a cold drink. So when you got real thirsty, somebody’s outside faucet was turned on and you Justify was like a blast from my Uncle’s double barrel gulped from that gushing garden hose. shotgun. Man that water was good. Tasted way better than any Dasani ever could. As you enjoyed satisfying swallow after swallow, you had to ask yourself… just how good is this hose pipe water? With that in mind, we present this award to Monomoy Girl. This three-year old filly was nothing short of sensational in 2018. She crossed the finish line first in six grade 1 events (DQ to second in the Cotillion) and completed the year with six wins overall. Included in those wins were scores in the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, and Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Running her seven races at six different tracks, this Brad Cox trained filly was as good as it gets in her division…kind of like that hose pipe water on a hot summer day! THE DOUBLE BARRELL SHOTGUN- My great uncle Onzie had a 20 gauge double barrel shotgun he always carried hunting. He let me carry it a time or two once he got older. I can still hear his advice ringing true “If you got any doubts give’em both barrels at once son,” said the wise old country boy. Unlike the pumps and automatics others carried, there were only two shots before reloading. And if you pulled both triggers at once it would be over quick, but man what a powerful blast it would be. The double barrel goes to Justify. Later on the scene than most Kentucky Derby contenders, he ran the first race of his career in February and four months later was wearing the Triple Crown. In that brief time span this Bob Baffert trained son of Scat Daddy historically captured the Kentucky Derby, displayed his power in the Preakness, and was bedazzling in the Belmont. Six wins in six career starts with four grade 1 victories in less than 16 weeks means he was short lived in the game but the power he packed, sort of like when you pull both triggers! THE COON HOUND- If you have ever watched a coon hound work, sometimes you wonder what the heck they are doing. It’s night time and they run off into the woods and start barking. Especially with a young dog you have your doubts because you don’t know if they are really on the trail to success. Then the barking becomes much more fevered and you shine a light and see that all you needed to do was trust in your dog’s stuff. The 2018 Coon Hound goes to jockey Flavian Prat and Fashion Business. On the undercard of the Pacific Classic back in August was the mile and three eighths Del Mar Handicap. Run over the Jimmy Durante turf course at the fabulous Seaside Oval, this grade 2 event featured some of the heavy grass hitters from the left coast. Trained by Phil D’Amato, the British bred son of Frankel relaxed near the back of the field once the gates opened. Cruising along in ninth after the opening ¾ of a mile, the four-year old gelding was way back. As the runners neared the half mile pole Prat decided it was time to hit the gas. Accelerating like it was the final sixteenth, the savvy Frenchman asked his mount for a lot more and he got it. Fashion Business bolted to the front and lead by four lengths at the top of the stretch. The early move had most wondering “what the Hades is he barking at?” Most expected Business to tire and fade as the finish approached, but instead it was just the opposite. This was no ghost trail he was on, it was the real deal with a prize treed at the end. The huge early move paid big as Fashion Business rolled to an easy 5 ¼ length win. THE UNCLE HENRY- Every smart hillbilly carries a pocket knife. You just don’t know when you might have to skin out a rabbit or cut up some ingredients for the latest batch of corn in a jar. When you have really arrived was when you had an Uncle Henry brand knife with at least two blades. Good news is if the knife gets dull, you just break out the whetstone and sharpen it up cause it is a quality product with two blades for cutting. This year’s Uncle Henry goes to Peter Miller. This spirited California conditioner wrote his name in the history books when he won two Breeders’ Cup races in back to back years with the same horses. Roy H was dominant with a powerful score in the Sprint for the second consecutive year and Stormy Liberal went back-to back in the Turf Sprint. Now here is where we find out how sharp Miller has been in 2018. After winning his first two Cup races at one of his home tracks in 2017, people were a bit skeptical as these two stable stars had a few ups and downs since winning at Del Mar. After losing his first four races of the year, Stormy responded to the program again and concluded a four race winning streak with a triumphant trip over the Churchill Downs turf at the Cup. Roy H had won two races in four starts on the year, but had a jockey change in August after a second place finish in the Bing Crosby at Del Mar. To Miller’s credit, he found a way to put a good edge on his other champ as well. Running just off a suicidal pace (21.35) in the opening quarter mile, Roy rolled to the front at the top of the stretch and cut the competition wide open as he won easily by a widening 3 ¼ lengths. Leaving little doubt about his abilities to sharpen up his horses for the big stage, it was Miller time for the second consecutive year at the Breeders’ Cup. Danny Brewer is a member of the Turf Publicists of America, and a voter in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association national poll. He can be contacted via e-mail - sportzbrew@comcast.net

BISHOP CHURCH OF RELIGIOUS SCIENCE

Rev. Freda Lindsay, Minister Rev. Dr. Walt Sharer Sunday Service: 10 am Meditation: 9:40 am Wednesday 5:30 pm: Prayer Group Practitioners: Rev. Dr. Juanella Evans Science of the Mind: Philosophy, a faith, a way of Life. Use the teachings each day to enrich your life.

129 East Line Street • Bishop (760) 873-4195

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Your Thinking Makes it So Rev. Johnnie Coleman declared, “I am the thinker that thought the thoughts that made the things.” Ernest Holmes said, “Thoughts are things.” Both of these statements are applicable to each and every one of us. While looking at the Creation story in Genesis, we can see where God spoke into Chaos, and out of nothing created everything, and later, in that first chapter he said, “Let us make man in our own image and after our likeness--- that he should have dominion of the earth.” In other words, we have the same nature of God. We can speak our word, out of which, creates our experience, both in form, circumstance or situation. The New Thought Movement has been around for a little more than a hundred and fifty years. Essentially the power of the individual to control his health and well-being is not controlled from outside, but from within. We do not worship a far off deity or place one man above the others. We recognize and appreciate what others may call Saviors, Messiahs scholars, philosophers that have contributed to our body of knowledge and provided way showing benefit, however; we cannot escape the conclusion that our life experience and future experience is entirely dependent on the thoughts we think and the words we utter. It is a big responsibility, but entirely worth it. This may sound like we reject other faiths or their message. That is not true. Personally, I love Jesus, and I love what he reportedly said, however; I don’t necessarily love everything that was said about him. Jesus empowered each individual when he said, “It is done unto you as you believe.” With that statement he told us how our belief is playing itself out in our life. This is where Religious Science differs from many of the God dependent organizations. The Bible tells us that God created a perfect place called Eden, and it flourished as long as the created abided with the Creator in harmony, but when human emotions were stirred up, man was expelled. Suddenly, man had to make his own path, depending not so much as God, but on his own. Actually, it is a story of how man can bring his life into order, by the power of his own decisions. When Ernest Holmes founded Religious Science, he said, “I want Religious Science to be open at the top. “ New writers, thinkers, ministers and lecturers can come up with new revelations and insights, which will add to our pool of wisdom. Individuals can apply the Truths to their life and have unique experiences based on their consciousness. When we look around and behold undesirable situations, circumstances and incidents in our life, we know we can change it by changing the belief that brought them into our life, in the first place. It is, by no means as easy as pie, but it is definitely doable. Remember the words of Rev. Johnnie Coleman, “I am the thinker that thought the thoughts that made the things.” Say it aloud and know it is you. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
