Eastern Sierra, CA-- We forget how snowy this part of eastern California we live in, until, we get smacked with three-plus weeks of snow and rain. Then, old-timers come to re-live other astonishing winters of the past, and they remind us, we haven’t seen nothin’ yet. Prepare. Stay vigilant and maintain your own level of safety and preparedness.

Winter Storm Iggy Named

It’s not like we need names for winter storms, back-to-back, but it’s significant to note each one of these historic events. As Californians, we need to keep track of our memorable weather-related events, like winter storm Iggy (named January 16, 2023). And, as the internet media and local news outlets give us our information and weather-related knowledge, it’s interesting to see these record-breaking storms make history across the globe.

Speaking of records across the globe, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area reached a new pinnacle of history on January 13th, and the media news, as “The Snowiest Ski Resort in the World.” Yes! The world. And, that speaks volumes of snowfall, nearly 36 feet of snow (more than 419 inches, since the end of 2022, but, mainly, since January 1st, 2023). Note: Rule of thumb: about a foot of snow to one inch of rain. This math plays out like this. Thirty-six feet of snow is the equivalent of more than 420 inches of snowfall, and that’s like putting a Mammoth Lakes’ school bus on its end, or stacking two Ford Explorers endto-end....You get the idea. And, it’s not even an El Niño Year!

As more Pacific storms pound the West, residents and visitors alike must prepare for more of this snowiest weather in a while to continue. If you live in the Mammoth Lakes’ region, you must have some snow clearing help to get the weight of the snow off of your roofs, before the next 35 feet of snow arrives! Roof Collapse comes with a snap, crackle and pop!

Attention Drivers: You risk your own safety / and that of others, when you decide to travel, unnecessarily during storms, in the mountainous regions of the West during winter. Think carefully before you get into your vehicle to leave home, to travel into the wilderness. BE PREPARED! Our volunteer rescue outfits might not reach you in time....

Bishop Rain, Flooding, and Avalanches

Listen to your cell phone alerts, or NOAA weather station, and you’ll find, avalanches and alerts are almost every day and must be paid attention to, each and every time. Avalanches are triggered by humans, pets, movement, rain, wind, ice, and more snowfall. CRACK! We have reached EXTREME levels with avalanches now. It’s deceiving, and while you think you might just be visiting the nearby canyons or snow play areas, you are in fact, now entering EXTREME avalanche areas, for the time being.

The Tablelands, north of Bishop, and nearby Chalfant Valley, are landscapes sitting atop a layer of miles of pumice, and tuff rock. This material floats on water. Yes! Floats on water. Light and stable looking on top, the deceiving Tablelands’ pumice float sucks 4 X 4’s and other heavy vehicles into its soupy mix before you realize, you’re stuck up to the hubs.... Try to dig out, it creates a pond....

Stay on designated trails and roads, as some of these pumice-floats, which look like solid ground, are really like underground lakes, waiting to swallow your whole vehicle!

Mammoth Mountain, seen in this image from December 2022, was recently awarded with the internet’s “Snowiest Ski Resort in the World,” on January 13, 2023. With an astonishing 420 inches of snow, and growing, (the equivalent of 36 feet of snow!), the small ski resort remains open and operating, with intermittent closures, and lots of avalanche mitigation. Travel to the Eastern Sierra remains super sketchy, and don’t be caught in a snowstorm wearing your beach shorts and flip-flops!!

A payment Bond, Performance Bond, Workers’ Compensation Certificate and Certificate of Insurance will be required prior to execution of the contract. The aforementioned bonds and certificates shall be in the form called for in the contract documents. All workers will be required to pass a DOJ Live Scan background check prior to being on campus.

The District has determined the general prevailing rate of per diem wages in the locality in which this work is to be performed for each craft or type of worker need to execute this contract: These rates are on file at the District Office. Copies may be obtained on request.

The schedule of per diem wages is based upon a working day of eight (8) hours. The rate for holiday and overtime work shall be at least time and one-half.

It shall be mandatory upon the contractor to whom the contract is awarded (Contractor), and upon any subcontractor under him, to pay not less than the said specific rates to all workers employed by them in the execution of the contract. It is Contractor’s responsibility to determine any rate change which may have or will occur during the intervening period between each issuance of written rates by the Director of Industrial Relations.
