“To Fly” to the Skies 2022
By Christina Reed The Hired Pen
Falconry takes flight in the Owens Valley
Raptor: Old Latin word: meaning: “to seize,” or “to take” or “to snatch” Eastern Sierra, CA—Raptors or birds of prey, with names such as falcons, owls, accipitrids (small birds of prey; goshawks are accipiters) belong to two orders of birds. Many of the bird species in the world are predators, like the raptors, however, birds of prey are specialized in their form, needs, and skills. There are nearly 300 different species of birds of prey, and these birds get studied and classified in some unique ways. Two “Orders” of the birds describe their talons (grasping feet) and their hooked beaks. Falconiformes have “cycle-shaped falcate” beaks and talons, and these birds could be hawks, eagles, falcons, harriers, or kites, and these birds are active during daylight (diurnal). Birds in the Order: Strigiformes, with their forms or shapes like owls, and these raptors are hunters at night (nocturnal). And, while not all raptors are related, as birds of prey, these hunters do share some similarities. Known for their keen eyesight, in both daylight and nighttime, raptors rule the skies for hunting. Their body shape and feathers facilitate their amazing displays of hunting prowess, and these birds are able to power their way through the skies at mach speeds. They are camouflaged in nature, and this helps keep the birds from being seen in the wild. Once the raptors spot their prey, they swoop down on the animal or bird, and they use their strong talons and beaks to catch the prey. Setting the Raptors to Flight The California Hawking Club, founded in 1971, recently held a four-day meet / sky trials, in the Owens Valley, on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. The meet was held at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, in Bishop, CA, surrounded by the Sierra Nevada and White Mountains. These magnificent mountain ranges provided the perfect backdrop for setting their raptors to flight, “to fly,” in the country’s deepest valley. Snow-capped peaks, and chilly weather were ideal for the birds of prey, and the falconry on display was a real-time experience of the living heritage of this ancient sport / hunt. Falconry is a sport where one uses trained birds of prey to hunt wild game. Both men and women have practiced falconry through the ages, and there are artifacts (recent 800-year-old antler carving; discovery in Oslo, Norway: Smithsonian) displaying this sport. The falconers came from all over California, and some of the raptors on display and

flying the skies, were an uncommon sight to see. Falconry is a tightly regulated sport (federal and state hunting regulations), with layers of knowledge and expertise needed, along with several hunting licenses, and three levels of education. You start out, age 12 and older: one falcon, and a two year “apprenticeship.” This requires you to have taken a hunter education course (105-questions), like all hunters; followed by working with a “Master” for the two years: Working with the Master includes, husbandry, the training of the raptors held for falconry, learning relevant laws and regulations, and what species of raptor is appropriate for your hunting. Your mews, housing for the birds are inspected, outdoor weathering areas are inspected, you are required

Eloy Carlin, and “Chula,” a Peregrine falcon. The falcon came from the South Padres Island, near the Texas coast, and Carlin, a Master falconer of 54 years, was allowed to trap this falcon on her migration south to Mexico. “Chula” is two years old, and Carlin said he has been “curious” about falconry since he was a “kid, growing up in a rural town.” He “saw the hawks soaring in the sky,” as a kid, and thought “how cool” it would be to get to know these birds.
Stephanie Jayre, and “Kaui,” a Great Horned Owl, educated the visitors at the 50th Anniversary of the California Hawking Club, Tri-County Fairgrounds, Bishop, CA. The owl, a raptor, has a permanently broken wing, and is not hunted with. If “Kaui,” was hunting, she’d be looking for rats and mice, and she is a part of Jayre’s non-profit, “Wings of Discovery.” Jayre is a falconer, beginning her apprenticeship in 2007, she also possesses a Siberian Goshawk. Photos by The Hired Pen
to weigh your bird every day, to the gram or close method of weight measurement; is the bird protected from other predator birds; is there enough sunlight for the bird; is it a healthy environment for the bird? Falconers become a “General” level hunter, which includes five years of falconry, and finally, a Master, were they are able to handle more than one bird of prey. The birds are banded, and those that are bred in captivity, have seamless bands. Female raptors are bigger than male raptors, and dominate in the bird’s relationship. Being smaller and faster, the males hunt, and share in the kill. Once the kill has been made, the raptors go through a “mantling” protective process, and they spread their wings out, and eat at the captured prey. Eagles are, in fact, large hawks, and mate for life. Other raptors, like the Harris’s hawks, hunt in packs or groups of birds. What types of raptors are used for hunting depends on what game you are hunting, and your personal preference for the birds of prey. Typical prey includes: rabbits, squirrels, sparrows, pigeons, doves, ducks, and special hunting stamps / tags are needed for some of the prey being hunted (for example, duck hunting stamps). A hybrid Harris’s hawk, with unusual colors and feathers, sits, ever watchful of the goings-on around them.
The Peregrine falcon, one of the speediest hunters in the birds of prey, and it belongs to one of the two Families in the Order of Accipitridae and Falconidae. Both of these Orders of raptors, birds of prey, are represented in the Eastern Sierra. The notch in the falcon’s beak (the tomial tooth) is a hunting adaptation for raptors. Peregrine falcons primarily hunt birds. Falcon, the word, comes from “falco,” which means “sickle” or “scimitar-shaped” and this shape (its beak) is similar to the farm cutting tool / blade, the sickle. All falconiform species, birds of prey, are protected by federal laws.
A row of Harris’s hawks on display in the “weathering yard,” during the 50th Anniversary of the California Hawking Club, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. In the depth of winter, these raptors perform at their optimal hunting abilities. The cooler temperatures and abundant game in the Owens Valley, produced some of the best experiences for the visiting falconers.
for, where you can hunt, and the hunting has a regulated season. You must have your permits on your immediate possession, like a fishing or hunting license. There are also raptors which can not be taken from the wild: federally listed /threatened / endangered species: bald eagle, white-tailed eagle, Steller’s sea eagle, golden eagle, American swallow-tailed kite, Swainson’s hawk, peregrine falcon, flammulated owl, elf owl, and short-eared owl. There is no possession of “nestlings” allowed. Most importantly, your bird has to hunt, and it has to be able to survive on its own. Raptors aren’t pets. The birds are tethered with leather anklets, called jesses, long leather ties / leashes, which will break off and biodegrade if the raptor takes off into nature. They have bewits, bells on their anklets, and the birds wear hoods; hooding calms them from what they can be afraid of seeing. Falconry is not for everyone, and the raptors are not like a pair of skis, or fishing pole, or gun, which you can put away in your garage, closet, or storage unit. They are living creatures, and need care, and flight time in the wild. The raptors form an emotional bond with their handlers, and the falconers are the bird’s source of food. Many raptors are trained to hunt for a year or two, and thus, those birds of prey might stand a better chance of survival on their own, and this is one way the Peregrine falcon population has been brought back (a conservation effort) to a healthier number of birds in California. Winter is a hard time for young birds, and statistics show many raptors don’t survive well their first year in the wild. And, there is always the chance the bird will fly away, and won’t ever return to hunt for you....
Falconry is the only sport where man uses a wild animal to hunt another wild animal, and it’s different from hunting with a dog. In this business relationship / hunting partnership, the human is the “dog,” flushing the prey from the brush or woods, and the raptor facilitates the kill. Falconry is technically, hunting, and you and your bird must be licensed to harvest / take, quarry. You need permission from private land owners to fly your raptors over their lands, and you need to make a record of all of the game taken in the hunt, just like fishing or deer hunting, there are limits to what can be hunted

“Ares” is a six-year-old Applomado, a type of falcon, and is a native of Peru. Falconer, Peter Stavrianoudakis, from Delhi, CA, hunts for quail, dove and sparrows, with this raptor.

Lincoln Clark ‘Link’ Stanley February 12, 1932 - December 30, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lincoln Clark ‘Link’ Stanley on December 30th, 2021, at his home in Bishop, with loving family members by his side. Link was born in Jett, Oklahoma on February 12, 1932 to Ralph and Lydia Stanley. When he was 6 months old, he moved west with his parents and brother from Oklahoma to Fish Lake Valley, Nevada. As a young man growing up in Fish Lake Valley, Link worked at the Cord ranch, Bar 99 ranch, Arlemont Ranch and many other of the old ranches in the area working cattle and farming hay. At 14 years of age, Link quit school and went to work full time at the Cord Ranch, a couple of years later, he traveled to and worked around northern California and eastern Oregon, before returning to Fish Lake Valley around 1950 to work as the cattle boss for the Arlemont Ranch. On one trip to Bishop to attend a Rodeo and Homecoming Dance, he met Patricia Johnson and the two were married in 1951. In 1953 Link joined the U.S. Airforce, attended basic training in Cheyenne, Wyoming and then four years active duty and an addditional 3 years as a reserve serving in Iceland during the Korean War, before being honorably discharged in 1960. After his service to his country, Link, Patricia and their two young children moved back to Bishop where he got a job with CalTrans as an equipment operator, and eventually retiring as a district safety supervisor. Link loved leather work and his business, “Link’s Custom Leather”, kept him busy repairing saddles, making belts and wallets, and beautiful leather artwork. He was very involved in the Homecoming Rodeo Association, and loved helping out at the local ranches, especially with his great friends at the C Ranch and the Yribarren Ranch, and there was nothing better than spending the day on horseback working cattle. Link enjoyed doing deep pit BBQs for big crowds of people, and was famous for his beans and his giant bean pot. He happily volunteered his time and talents for High School Rodeo, 4H / FFA, Mule Days and anyone else that needed help feeding alot of people. After retirement, he went on to work at the Laws Railroad Museum for a number of years where he introduced his his great-grandson, Owen, to a “Love of Old Things”. Link loved his grandchildren and never missed any of their activites, lending a helping hand, hugs to anyone that needed one, and always with that big smile and a hello to everyone. He worked hard his whole life, keeping busy with his woodworking and making rocking horses for many toddlers in the valley. He still kept up his own yard and tended to his flower and vegetable gardens. Link was preceded in death by his son Chris, and his brothers William, Bob and Jack. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Pat; daughter Cindy and husband Eric Johnson; granddaughter Trisha and husband Grant Wallace; grandson Troy Johnson and wife Kristi; great grandsons Owen Hildenbrand and Tychus Johnson. Graveside service will be held at the East Line Street Cemetary on Saturday February 12, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Reception following.
