Eastern California—You simply can’t be too prepared to visit the eastern region of California. Another new year finds many roads, major highways, and interstates, backed up to the limits, with travelers stranded in snow storms. Four points to cover, whether you live here or not: preparedness for personal, home, vehicle, and work. And, your vehicle needs to be weather-proofed, even if you are just “going to the market.” Every year, there are heart-wrenching stories of people caught off-guard, even locals, in life-changing weather-related events. Lives end. Lives change. It just happens so much quicker, in freezing temperatures.

Personal Safety

You are the only one who can determine your own level of personal needs. However, if you are entrusting others to your own personal safety, make sure you leave these people with clear instructions, and your personal needs in clearly marked places. It starts with owning our personal needs for safety.

Personal safety kits can be built by investing in the carry-able essentials. WATER. Fire. Fuel. Food. Shelter. Medications, if needed. Light source. Shovel!

These essentials go into your vehicle with you when you leave your home. All seasons. And, that shovel can save your life, from shoveling snow away from your tail pipes, or stove vents, or wood stove tops, or fire hydrants, to clearing your path if stuck, to building a fire in deep snow, for heat and food preparedness...You can live longer with shovels!

Home Base

You can’t ever be too prepared. The pandemic has shown us that. If you do nothing else this new year, get yourselves self-sufficient, sustainable, and prepared. Your home is where your story begins, and if you can’t keep it safe, well...You can inform yourselves about self-preparedness, and what should be in your home essentials’ safety spaces / kits / infrastructures (like home fire extinguishers!).

Vehicle Preparedness

You are responsible, as a licensed vehicle driver, for knowing and abiding by California’s highway laws. Always check weather alerts and traffic messages before driving in the winter months in the mountains. If the road says, CLOSED, please turn around and stay away from dangerous conditions. More driving information can be found by calling 511, or Caltrans Quickmaps, at www.dot.ca.gov or by calling 800-427-7623. In Nevada, road conditions can be found by calling 511, or 877-687-6237.

Modern GPS systems in your vehicles don’t always take you to a safe road to travel in winter conditions. “Road closed” signs aren’t posted on every road / GPS system.... In fact, some times your GPS systems lead you to a dead end road, with no place to turn around in the snow.

You should plan on having at least a week’s worth of food, water, and emergency supplies if you live here! So, plan accordingly, when you travel beyond safe havens, and into the wilderness. GPS and emergency rescue can’t reach you, if they can’t get out of their stations!

Failing to carry your chains or not having any, will result in being turned around at the chain-up areas, where highway patrol checks vehicles. There are law enforcement fines involved for not using chains. And, if chains are used on US 395, or other state roads, chains must be used when driving in the county, towns, and the City of Bishop streets.

Residents and businesses should clear snow from public sidewalks at their homes and businesses as soon as possible during and after snow. Clearing snow from sidewalks is especially important in areas that stay shaded from the low winter sun. If the snow is not cleared immediately, it can partially melt, then freeze and remain slippery for a long time. State law and city policy make the maintenance of sidewalks, including snow removal, the responsibility of the adjacent property.

When chains are required on Bishop-area highways, they should be also be used on Bishop city streets. Chain requirements for state highways are available from Caltrans including by dialing 511 from any phone. Since both Highway 168 and Highway 395 are long routes, care is needed to ensure the chain requirements for the portions of those highways in Bishop are noted.

Please help keep Bishop as safe and convenient as possible when it snows. Use snow tires or chains as appropriate when driving on city streets and immediately clear snow from sidewalks at your home or business. Your assistance is appreciated.

With 2023 on the near horizon, the Bishop Fire Department is looking for community-minded individuals who are interested in serving others and volunteering as firefighters or EMTs in the new year.

The Bishop Fire Department is holding a new volunteer orientation to kick-off 2023. Anyone who is interested in joining the department is invited to attend the department’s weekly trainings this January, at 6:45 p.m. every Wednesday at the Fire Training Facility, 960 Poleta Road in Bishop.

There are a few prerequisites to serving on the department, such as passing a background check and physical, but no prior firefighting experience is required. Volunteers can anticipate spending roughly 20 hours per month responding to calls, trainings and meetings. Volunteers respond to a variety of emergency and life safety calls, including fires and medical emergencies, as well as anything from carbon monoxide and propane leaks to weather related incidents, traffic accidents and other service calls. The department’s dedicated staff and volunteers mentor and guide new firefighters through the onboarding and training process. All of the initial training for firefighters is done in-house, and the department will work with perspective EMTs to help them through EMT class and national registry.

Being a volunteer firefighter or EMT is a catalyst for both personal and professional growth, and it can be extremely rewarding. In recent years, many newly graduated students have joined the department to gain experience and enhance their career goals. In addition to extensive public safety training, working with a volunteer department can open countless doors for opportunity. Bishop volunteers have participated in several wildfire deployments through Cal Fire, helped with fire prevention education programs in local schools, provided EMS standby for arena events at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, and participated in various local events and activities.

The department has fitness program incentives, as well as a recently implemented volunteer length of service pension program for volunteers who dedicate ten years or more to the department.
