Snow and ice removal for home, business, and auto starts with the right tools, equipment, and techniques By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

Sierra Nevada—Snow and ice present very different winter experiences for people. If you like to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, sled, or build a snowman, you love the fluffy white stuff. If you like to play hockey, ice skate, curl, or bobsled, you love the ice. However, if you are a homeowner, business person, or traveler in snow and ice, your opinions about the winter weather benefits are tempered by having to deal with snow and ice in your everyday chores and travel. Prepare now, while there is a brief lull in the winter weather action! Whole Lotta Snow Coming Down December 2021 will be a month and year to stand in the record books as the snowiest December on record (since 1970), with nearly 20 feet falling in some places in the Sierra Nevada. Full-on blizzards are visiting the region with some regularity, and the frigid temperatures (sub-zero readings) following the storms have proven to be just another one of the many hazards we are contending with currently. Ice, in particular, hiding under the layers of snow, is extremely difficult to eliminate once it forms, and even in four-wheel-drive, your ride just slides right off the roadway. Highway closures in the region, up and down the range, might keep you in your vehicle on the road for hours (12-16 hours in some cases). Bring chains, blankets, jackets, food, water, flashlights, a shovel, an ice scraper, traction aids (like cat litter or tire grip mats), and be prepared to camp in your vehicle. Keep a full tank of gas! Snow Removal Tips for Home and Business Snow removal equipment and tools keep improving with every new design, function, and taking a venture to your nearest hardware store for the latest in snow shovels, snow blowers, and ice-melt products is the smartest place to start. Argonomic shovels for snow removal have come a long way, and snow pushers with wheels can help move lighter snow in larger areas. There are back-saver attachments for snow shovels, and make sure you have the right shovel for the job. And, there are ice-breaker shovels for the really dicey stuff. Shovel smart, not hard. Shoveling snow is like running on a treadmill or weightlifting or an aerobic workout. You burn 223 calories per 30 minutes, and a shovel full of snow can weigh between 10 and 30 pounds. Shoveling snow sends about 700 people a year to the emergency room with heart-related issues. Nearly 100 people, largely men, die annually from snow removal heart-related issues. To reduce body fatigue, warm up first. Don’t eat large meals, smoke, or drink alcohol before strenuous snow removal activities. Mark boundaries in the yard with tall stakes. Use a proper shovel, and move the snow away from the house foundations. Shovel often, bend your knees, keep the blade close to you as you lift snow, and switch hands up and go overhand and underhand.

Shovel smart, not hard. Snow and ice removal requires the right tool, equipment or techniques, and with winter weather just starting, now’s the time to get prepared for the next big dump. Local hardware stores, with knowledgeable staff and the latest products, are the smartest place to start your snow and ice removal chores.

Snow / Ice removal at home and business includes: clearing walkways / sidewalks in front of your property, clearing the propane tank, fire hydrants, and external heating / furnace vents (using a broom as much as possible to prevent damage), and clearing alleys / easements and parking areas. Homes and businesses with flat roofs need clearing often when it is snowing heavily, and a roof snow rake can make this a much easier task. Snow melt can be used for walkways / driveways, but be careful which products you purchase, and make sure it can be used around your pets. Car covers and windshield covers can help keep vehicles out of the elements, and keep the ice removal process to a minimum. Happy and safe snow going in 2022!

Time to stop, allow him to rest, and give him immediate treatment for pain and fear. If he survived the night, we would plan and apply further care. In the morning he was standing and alert! Hydration, pain control, thigh fracture immobilization were next. In the next day or so, it became apparent that his digestive and urogenital systems were functioning normally and soft foods were added to his treatment. He healed well during the next weeks. The wounds healed quite quickly; the more severe femur fracture took longer. He could put weight on his injured leg and had pain response in his foot. Day by day he healed; moving outdoors into a small recovery cage; from there to a somewhat larger space, with numerous kinds of perches to exercise and strengthen the healing leg. For the past several days, he has been flying in a much larger flight cage, perch to perch, down to the ground for his feeding and up. All cats must be in a locked carrier BVH staff will come to the vehicle to take the order and collect payment, then veterinary staff will follow and ferform vaccinations.
