Inyo County's elected officials took the oath of office on January 4, 2021, at noon. Inyo County seat of government is the Independence Courthouse, Independence, CA. Congratulations to all of our newly elected leadership, and best wishes for success in your endeavors on behalf of the citizens.

Eastern Sierra, CA—Swearing in ceremonies are the top order of official business in the first weeks of the new decade, 2021, and across the country new leaders are assuming their roles in local, state, and federal governments. It's an exciting time for the freshman or returning leadership, but the pandemic is creating quite a change from the normal pomp and circumstance afforded to these once-in-a-lifetime moments. We congratulate all of those elected to their new positions, and we wish them the best in their efforts on our behalf, as citizens, to improve all of our lives. Inyo County's newly elected supervisors and other officials were sworn in on Monday, January 4, at noon, in a virtual ceremony at the Inyo County Courthouse, in Independence, CA. Susanne Rizo is Inyo County's newest Superior Court Judge, and she becomes the first female court judge for the county in 155 years. Rizo is an attorney with experience in Inyo County's Counsel's office, and she was the Director of Child Support Services. She has prosecuted battery, DUI, and domestic violence cases, and civil and environmental law cases. Judge Rizo joins Superior Court Judge Stephen Place in the county's judicial processes. Superior court judges are elected by the voters for a six-year term in office.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen This interview with Chuck Kilpatrick, “Mr. Bishop,” is as poignant today, as it was nearly 10 years ago. As a long-time writer in the Eastern Sierra, I've had the supreme pleasure to know many of the memorable citizens of the region, and Chuck Kilpatrick was just such a gem of a human being. He will be missed more than we'll ever be able to express. (The Sierra Reader story from June 21, 2013) Eastern Sierra, CA--Thinking about the community events, City of Bishop, the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, the Fishing Opener, the California High School Rodeo Finals, fine Irish songs, and Schat's bread, brings Chuck Kilpatrick to mind. An ambassador of the eastern Sierra, Kilpatrick, and his eighth grade sweetheart, turned wife, Mary Mae, are integral people who help bring (and keep bringing) visitors to the area. "I thoroughly enjoy this town. I want to see it thrive," says Kilpatrick, with his big trademark grin. He also notes, he's "tickled at the present stature of the Chamber [of Commerce] in the community."

A long way from Pleasantville, New Jersey Goldfield, Nevada seems an implausible place to live as a teenager in the 1930s, especially when you're newly arrived from Pleasantville, NJ. However, Kilpatrick recalls living with his family in his grandmother, Nettie Wills', boarding house (now moved to Las Vegas, NV). He also lived in Sparks, NV, and resided in Rovana, CA (as a newlywed). The mining prospects brought his stepfather (a geologist) and family to the West, and eventually the Kilpatricks became a part of the eastern Sierra landscape.

Three Inyo County supervisors were Newly elected Superior Court Judge Susanne Rizo joins Inyo County Superior Court Judge Stephen Place. sworn in, including Jeff Griffiths, District #2 (City of Bishop, and east to the airport and Laws, and north area), Jen Roeser, District #4 (Wilkerson to the Big Pine area, and out east to Deep Springs, and south to Independence), and Matt Kingsley, District #5 (Lone Pine south to the Kern County line, and east to the Nevada border). New to Inyo County's Board of Supervisors is Jen Roeser, and Roeser becomes one of only five women to hold a supervisorial position in Inyo County's 155 years. Although, Roeser is not a newcomer to the Eastern Sierra. She and her husband Lee run the McGee Pack Station, and Roeser's resume consists of the living art exhibition and ambitious “100 Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct,” in 2013; she is the President of the National Forest Recreation Association, and she is currently the editor and chairs the “Mule Days Magazine,” according to her website. She is well-known as an advocate for Eastern Sierra heritage. Roeser is quoted as saying, SEE NEW FACES ON PAGE 5

Kilpatrick served in the military (Korea and Vietnam), and was stationed for a time in Germany. It was a stay at Camp Kilmer, NJ, that reunited Kilpatrick with his sweetie, Mary Mae. He says Mary Mae was at Trenton State Teachers College when he was "restricted to post," so he was unable to meet her for a date. She thought he'd stood her up. A later meeting cleared up the miscommunique, and they were married-happily ever after....Fast forward to Round Valley's little school (K-8th grade), where Mary Mae has been involved for more than 40 years, as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and educator. Kilpatrick has many business experiences to draw from, and he sees Bishop's Main Street corridor as one big, business canvas to create some more community assets. He envisions an old-fashioned ice cream store, perhaps a small brewery or winery, a "good shoe store," and maybe another family-styled steak house. "Things that would attract people," he notes, to go along with other town assets like "the Bishop City Park and swimming pool." He knows Bishop is a major landmark between Los Angeles and Reno, NV, and he hopes he can continue helping the eastern Sierra towns "not go by the wayside."--CAR

Sworn into office (in December 2020) as new City of Bishop Council members, Karen Kong and Jose Garcia are already voting on downtown Bishop visions. This is Garcia's second memorable swearing in, in the past two years. Garcia took the Oath of Allegiance (sworn declaration every citizenship applicant takes before the last step toward the naturalization process) in the fall of 2019 at Manzanar National Historic Site. Garcia is Interpreter at Northern Inyo Healthcare District, and Chairman of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association. He's also served on the City of Bishop's Planning Commission, and he's been involved with the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, and Inyo Council of the Arts. The 117th Congress was sworn in on Sunday, January 3, at noon, and the current members of the House of Representatives in Congress serve until January 3, 2023. Administering the oath of office to newly elected senators (elected for six year terms), Vice President Mike Pence asked: “Do you solemnly swear that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic?�
