Friends of Our Lands (A Monthly Column in El Sol de la Sierra)

From Sheepherder to Rancher: Spanish by Birth, Californian at Heart By Louis Medina

(Read till the end to learn about a FREE English/Spanish Bilingual Event on July 23)

When you see him in his hat, jeans and cowboy boots, his skin tanned by the sun, Emilio Collado looks Mexican. However, when you hear him speak, there is no doubt that he is Spanish, but with a unique accent that combines Castilian and Asturian, the abrupt cadence of Basque, and words such as “traila” or “troca” or “fensa” in Spanglish, a mix of Mexican Spanish and English. Collado is a rancher who owns two leases north of Bishop, where he raises goats, cattle and horses. But this father of four, three sons and one daughter, grandfather of 12, and soon-to-be great-grandfather in October, wasn’t always his own boss. Roots and Migration Born in 1961 in a small town called Vega de Cien, in the Principality of Asturias, on the Cantabrian Coast of northern Spain, Collado came to the United States in 1983, after completing his mandatory military service in his country – “la mili,” as the Spanish say. Before him, about 10 of his cousins and neighbors from his home town, which is near the Basque Country, had come to the United States to work as sheepherders, or “borregueros,” as Hispanic shepherds in the U.S. usually call themselves. It was they who encouraged him to come try his luck here. “During the Franco era, many Spaniards came to the United States,” says Collado, referring to Francisco Franco, the military dictator who ruled Spain with an iron fist for nearly 40 years until his death in 1975. Collado came to Bakersfield to work for rancher Lorenzo Iturriria, who at one time had more than 20,000 sheep and who would be his boss, his “patrón,” for a quarter of a century. The Life of a Sheepherder Sheepherding is a difficult and lonely occupation. For Collado, it meant spending entire months in the company of just the sheep and one or two sheepdogs, making the trek from just outside Bakersfield in Kern County to Lee Vining in central Mono County, a distance of nearly 300 miles. He was armed with a rifle in case he ran into a mountain lion or a bear. His contact with other people was infrequent, although every week he could count on someone who delivered food items: bread, wine, meat. Sometimes he stayed in a tent. Sometimes in a trailer, like the one seen in the photo, which he now uses to store saddles and other items for horseback riding. He had a power generator, and inside the trailer there was room for just a refrigerator, a stove, a bed, and a table.

In winter he had to heat water for bathing, but he often didn’t feel like it because of the cold. There were no cell phones then. He had to wait until he was near a town so he could make calls or mail letters. But at least out in nature there was nowhere to spend the money he earned. Everything went into his savings account. Changes in Climate The sheepherders and their herds would leave the hills around Bakersfield in December, after the ewes had finished birthing, Collado says, and slowly, always looking for grass, make their way toward Lee Vining, where they would arrive in June. Global warming still did not affect the countryside as much as it does today. “It snowed and rained a lot. There was water everywhere,” Collado recalls. On the other side of the Sierra, in the San Joaquin Valley, “there were fields upon fields of alfalfa.” There were times when up to three feet of snow was still visible in parts of Lee Vining in early summer. Summer afternoon showers were common. “There’s a terrible change that has happened now,” he says. He has noticed how even though more water is sent to Mono Lake to keep it at a certain level, the lake keeps going down. Personal Changes When Collado came to the U.S., he had a three-year contract. But when it was time to renew it, he told his boss that he no longer wanted to keep herding sheep.

Iturriria liked him and offered him a job as a ranch hand on another ranch he owned outside of Bishop. Collado would no longer have to herd sheep and could work with horses, which are his passion. It was 1986 and his life also changed tremendously in another way: It was the year he met Dorothy in a bar-restaurant that was where The Pizza Factory is today. She played softball with the city league, and happened to go there with her teammates for a drink after a game. They got married in 1990. At this time, they are getting ready to travel to Spain. In 2003, Iturriria fell ill and decided to sell his properties. Collado bought half of his land, which includes the house where he and Dorothy live today. Collado has resigned himself to the fact that his children do not want to be ranchers like him. They prefer other types of work where “they make more money and don’t work as much,” he says. He also believes that “la borrega,” that is, sheepherding, may not last much longer in the Eastern Sierra. “There’s no interest anymore,” he says. Invitation: Shepherds of Today! FREE Event in City Park Coming Up July 23 If he had not already scheduled a trip this year to visit his siblings in Spain, whom he has not seen for 12 years, Collado would have liked to participate in the “Shepherds of Today!” (“Pastores ¡De Hoy!”) event: a talk with people who work or have worked in “la borrega,” which will take place bilingually in Bishop City Park on Saturday, July 23, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. It is a free event organized by Friends of the Inyo and sponsored by The Sierra Reader and El Sol de la Sierra newspapers, and is part of Latino Conservation Week, a nationwide series of events from July 16-24, created by the Hispanic Access Foundation to help the Latino community to get outdoors and participate in activities to protect our natural resources. Although Collado will not be able to be with us that day, there will be other sheepherders present who will recount their adventures. Come meet them! We will be waiting for you at the Bishop City Park gazebo area off of Main Street. Until then, let us all remain friends of our lands. Louis Medina is Director of Communications and Philanthropy for Friends of the Inyo. If you have any questions, you can reach him at 760.873.6500 or at Louis@friendsoftheinyo.org.

Camping Comes in All Shapes and Sizes 2022

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen

It’s not just one-size-fits all tent camping anymore

Eastern Sierra, CA—When you think about camping over the generations of people, many images will come to mind, depending on what era you grew up in. Tent camping might be your memory, or in more modern times, a toy hauler with an ATV inside could be your style of camping. The options for camping types just keeps expanding, and with high technology devices for traveling lighter and faster, or bigger and longer, the opportunities are growing with each generation. Camp Like a Pro in the Eastern Sierra The Eastern Sierra Sustainable Recreation Partnership has a Camp Like a Pro link online, www.essrp.org, and this helpful website gives you guidelines for outdoor recreation / visiting and camping in the Sierra. Simple how-tos: stay in an established campground, fire restrictions, dispersed camping, and policies for some of the places you might camp around / in. Know before you go about the restrictions in place during the summer months, and get a FREE California Campfire permit at, www.readyforwildfire.org, before you have fires / cooking outdoors. The Camp Like a Pro website has updated camping information, and links to the forest and ranger districts too. These campsite policies are in place for the more than 160 developed campgrounds in the Eastern Sierra, and some of these campsites can be reserved at www.recreation.gov or www.reserveamerica.com. To Tent or Not to Tent? Tent camping is as old as the hills. The eastern Sierra side of California provides nearly unlimited types of trailer-free spots to set up a campsite. Choose your level of experience, and you could backpack into a wilderness area for a week or so, or maybe you’re more into fastpacking, and traveling super quick and light. Car / truck camping, or packing into the back country by mules, tents are a staple of camping around the world. In fact, visitors have been coming to the High Sierra to stay and camp, since the stage lines ran between Laws and San Francisco in the 1880s. During the 1920s-1930s, car camping became the “rage” in the High Sierra, and there were camps for travelers across the area. Visitors stayed in canvas tents / tent cabins, sometimes with a wood-burning cook stove for your meals.

Back packs come in all shapes and sizes, and are designed for different purposes, and even body shapes. Locally, in downtown Bishop, CA, check out the backpacks at Eastside Sporting Goods, not all backpacks are the same.

Bears are a real possibility when camping in the High Sierra. Bear canisters are sold at the local sporting goods stores, and when you’re done for the camping season, you can store emergency food in your car / truck.

Water storage / containers are another essential piece of camping gear to have plenty of during the summer months. Large variety to choose from at Eastside Sporting Goods.

Mountain running and water go together well with an Ultra Vest and pockets for water bottles or other gear. Fast and lightweight camping and running gear are specialties at Sage to Summit in Bishop, CA.

Shop Local Locally, outdoor shops can give you an advantage over shopping online for many of these items for camping. While you can watch a video on how to use a hiker’s water filtration system for getting drinking water safely from a creek or puddle, talking to people in-person is usually your best bet. The local level of experience for camping can’t be replaced by gear / out-of-the-area sporting goods stores, and the knowledge of the region for safely having fun is best picked up from people who are actively involved in being outdoors, here. And, keep in mind, many of the camping items can be added to your emergency / disaster box for other uses throughout the year. There are helpful checklists for starting your camping trips, printable and packable. Just a few questions can get your adventure off and running. How are you going to get there? What are you going to stay in? How are you going to eat, sleep, and the restroom accommodations? What type of surroundings / landscape are you looking to stay at? And, how long do you plan on your adventure lasting?

Power up your camping trip with portable solar panels and solar power stations. The latest in camping solar power systems / technology allows for a huge range of options for keeping your phones, laptops, lanterns, DVD players, and even car batteries charged. Photos by The Hired Pen

Lightweight and unique to Sage to Summit, in downtown Bishop, CA, the ULA backpacks are “Hyperlite,” and are essential fastpacking gear.
