Hugo’s BBQ and Mexican Food 2021 “We do barbecue everyday” and burritos galore

Big Pine, CA—Hugo’s BBQ and Mexican Food is a family business, dedicated to Hugo Sandoval, and owned and operated by the Sandoval family. Rojelio Sandoval, Hugo’s brother, greets you at the order window every day, from 6 am to 8 pm, and the Main Street business is very busy. With more than 50 combinations of plates, specials, side orders, and a-la-carte menu items, it’s difficult to chose which menu items to order...there’s so many choices. For a business just open for about eight months (opened October 2020), the business is brisk, the service is quick and convenient, and the food is tasty, as the customers from far and wide will tell you. The Sandovals are life-long Big Pine residents, and Rojelio notes his parents once ran the Chevron station in Big Pine, which also served up burritos and tamales. The family also owned the Shell station in Trona, CA, for many years. Burritos, burritos, burritos galore Hugo’s BBQ and Mexican Food turns out about 50 burritos a day, and even on a slow day, says Rojelio, they’ll make 26-30. There are “regulars,” who show up every couple of days for food, and Rojelio laughs when he mentions the “10 guys” who come in and buy food each week. Burritos can be carne asada, shredded beef, chicken, pork chile verde, chile relleno, or the unusual “Dogurrito,” which is a sausage link burrito (clever name). The burritos are generous in size, and could easily be your entire lunch, served with a cold beer or soft drink. And, the breakfast burritos are served all day, with the “Mixed Meats Breakfast Burrito”

receiving rave reviews from travelers and locals alike. However, Hugo’s BBQ also serves up traditional plates, such as birria, which is a savory traditional Mexican dish, usually made with goat meat, but also can be pork, beef, or lamb. Birria is a blend of chiles and spices, and is like a simmered kind of stew, traditionally served with limes, onions, and cilantro. Hugo’s BBQ serves birria enchiladas, tacos, and burritos, and these are lunch and dinner plates as well. Lunch and dinner plates come with rice and beans, and dinner plates come with a choice of corn or flour tortillas. Affordable lunches include barbecue sandwich specials, as well as beef rack, or whole barbecue chicken, which makes for a handy lunch on very hot days, when cooking seems undesireable. The side orders include 32 ounce or 160 ounce servings of pork chile verde, shredded beef, birria, chicken, homemade beans and rice, and of course, chips and salsa, and guacamole. There are also a-la-carte menu items, so picking up a single taco or enchilada is possible too. The outside eating area is pleasant, with shade trees and tables, and the views of the Sierra Nevada can’t be beat. Hugo’s BBQ and Mexican Food is also available for catering and orders to go. The restaurant is a nice addition to Big Pine’s downtown scene, and judging from the loyal returning customers, it’s going to celebrate a nice tradition of attracting visitors and residents to the small town in the Eastern Sierra.
