Bookin’ It Summer Reading features Eastern California Native Author Kendra Atleework Eastern California Native Publishes Her Memoir New on the author horizon in the High Sierra is Kendra Atleework's, “Miracle Country,” a memoir penned by a native of the eastern Sierra. The book presents homespun stories, written by a young person in touch with her home ground, and the storytelling is spoken in a tone familiar to readers of western prose, and Owens Valley history.

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Summertime is catch-up on reading time for many book enthusiasts, and especially this year, when we have more time at home to spend savoring new and old favorites. And, while the libraries in the eastern Sierra have undergone some changes in how books are checked out, as well as the two bookstores in the region, people are returning to reading as a national past time.

“Miracle Country” focuses on Atleework's family, her father, Robert Atlee, and her mother, Jan Work, and her siblings, Kaela and Anthony, and the book is not written chronologically, but instead glides back and forth—past and present. Atleework's writing style is that of an essayist, and she covers a lot of ground in one chapter and another, following “an idea,” she explains. It's a “snap-shot” of many lives, with a clear story arc, but not a conventional approach to a memoir, she admits. Atleework says, “I'm a champion of the essay genre,” and essays “challenge you to think. They [essays] pose questions. It's never cut and dry in an essay.” She also feels the style of writing lends itself to “gaining traction,” where “complexity and nuance” move the story forward. Atleework's book begins with the Round Fire of 2015, which all but consumed the community of Swall Meadows. When asked about starting her memoir with this tragedy, she pauses, and says, “No one's asked me that question.” She thinks for a moment, and says, “The fire happened in the middle of the book writing. I was researching the drought in California,” and she notes she did quite a bit of traveling for the research, which is extensive. She has a keen sense of geography, and her landscape. “There is a 500 source bibliography on my website.” But, back to the start. She struggled to find a focal point with all of the research and family stories, she adds. Then, the fire came along. She came home to find

her family home still standing. It took a conflagration to merge her thoughts. She says it was a “tangible example” of some of her ideas about “private and public loss, which affects the whole community. The town grieved together.” “What I worked hardest on,” Atleework says, “is connecting the people and the landscape.” She hopes readers will connect with the stories on several levels, and “feel more deeply in touch with their own landscape.” It's difficult to review a memoir, since the imagery is so fragile and personal. However, readers will find themselves immersed in histories of the state and region, and they will find for themselves how each of us handles grief, loss, exultation, triumph, comedy and tragedy. She's signing her books on Saturday, July 18, at 6 p.m., Bishop City Park (in the front).
