The Rummage Company “We like everything that is imperfect” at The Rummage Store. Acosta continues, “we like to take something and re-purpose it.” Take for example the vintage wooden ladders, attached to the high walls, displaying an array of other collectibles. There is a space being created for a bridal / wedding area, and this corresponds well with Acosta's other ventures, as a wedding coordinator / stylist /stage setting / planner. And, she's very adept at bringing an entire elaborate and elegant living space to the middle of a horse arena, or back country setting. Picture: Fall wedding setting, with trees turning vibrant colors. High Sierra backdrop. Open air vistas to mountains, and a mountain stream nearby. Seating area, dancing area, couches, a tee pee to take shade in, or an entire living room, for wedding guests to carry on conversations, while the bride and groom dance on a carpeted space, complete with candelabra. Imaginative, inventive, and given to uniqueness, Acosta says she wants people to “walk in here [The Rummage Company], and feel like they are in another era.” Even if folks don't buy someThe Rummage Company, Main Street in downtown Bishop, CA, offers customers vintage, rustic and eclectic items, and all come with complimentary former lives. “We like everything that is imperfect,” says owner Arline Acosta. Located at the south end of Main Street, The Rummage Company sits across the street from Alpine Signs and the 395 Store. By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—Bric-a-brac, antiques, collectibles, and donations of things that you don't need anymore are at the heart of The Rummage Company. “We are not antique,” says owner Arline Acosta. “We are rummage.” She laughs, and puts in, that many things come complete with the dust, once gathered someplace else.... As an old Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday tune plays in the background, Acosta gives her notions about what is rummage, and what might not be. “We like everything that is imperfect,” she explains, and then she begins to point out items in the store, which seem to have a life of their own...long before they arrived

The Rummage Company's staff member, Lolita Baque, straightens up a vintage baby carriage, filled with baby dolls.

The Rummage Company's owner,Arline Acosta, describes one of the collectibles, and surmises it might have belonged to a fictitious woman named “Carol,” and it was her ornate Victorian silver case for ...?

thing, she notes, “It might be their break in the day.” She hoping to get people “exposed to old things,” she calls “vintage.” What inspired Acosta to this business was a desire to leave the southern California area, and start something new. She had spent time in the eastern Sierra in the past, but returned for good about five years ago. The Rummage Company opened its door in April of 2019, and Acosta adds, she had a lot of work to do before that SEE RUMMAGE CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

happened. Setting up shop in Bishop's old undertaker quarters, otherwise known as a morgue, meant doing a great of of renovating. The building, probably built in the early 1920s, has had multiple lives since then, and Acosta was dead-set (pun intended) to get the old building's character back on display. It amounted to removing layer upon layer to reach the cement floor, and expose the high ceiling and enormous beams. Acosta is not the least put off by the building's former life. In fact, she's perfectly at home with the rustic, eclectic nature of the store's “bones” (infrastructure). Acosta's staff reflects her thoughts on transforming imperfections. Lolita Baque works alongside Acosta, and she's spent time in the antique business, formerly of Cobwebs, in Bishop. “I like the uniqueness of the clothes,” she notes. Baque is intrigued by the different times / eras in the store, and she's observed, like Acosta, many different stories (through donations) come in through the door. “Time has changed,” Baque adds, with a smile. “Broken-ness, and anything left behind,” inspires Acosta. It seems true, when Acosta says, with a twinkle in her eyes...the store's treasures “Al4 A wooden rocking horse, a vintage poker chip set, and ways go home with the right person. cowboy boots and hat keep company together at The Everything has a story, waiting to be Rummage Company, downtown Bishop, CA. “Everything retold.” has a story, waiting to be retold,” says owner, Arline Acosta. City of Bishop Requesting Public Input on Parks and Recreation Amenities In June 2018, California voters passed Proposition 68, a $4 billion bond measure to fund state and local parks. Now, the City of Bishop is seeking input from the community on priorities for parks and recreation projects. In order to be eligible for grant funding, the state requires the city to gather public input on what park and recreation amenities the community would like to see. Both enhancements to the existing park and new recreation features in the community will be considered. The workshops will be held at the following times and locations:  July 17, noon to 2:00 pm - City Hall Executive Conference Room (377 West Line Street)  July 18, noon to 2:00 pm - Spruce Street Pavilion on the east side of the City Park (across from the Senior Center – 682 Spruce Street)  July 24, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm - City Hall Executive Conference Room (377 West Line Street)  July 25, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Spruce Street Pavilion on the east side of the City Park (across from the Senior Center – 682 Spruce Street The workshop has an open agenda, so the public is invited to attend at any time as their schedule allows during the workshop hours. At the workshop, city staff will introduce Proposition 68’s grant rules, and the application process the city needs to follow. Recreation features could include playgrounds, pool improvements, an amphitheater, picnic and barbecue areas, amphitheaters, trails systems, and much more. The entire community is invited to attend and help brainstorm ideas. For those who are unable to attend the workshop meetings, there is an email address recreation@cityofbishop.com for written comments and ideas for the park. Please contact the City of Bishop Parks and Recreation Department with any questions at (760) 873-5863.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Spiritual Being Let us begin this article with a statement of fact; You are Perfect, Spiritual, and Divine. Just possibly, some reading these words would disagree, or think that was too lofty a position for a human being who has made a few mistakes along the way of their life, which may not be perfect. As for being spiritual; that too may be a challenge to those not attending some church regularly. I can already hear the denials of divinity, because that is reserved for God, not His creation. Each one of us comes into this world as a perfect vehicle for the One Mind of God, which receives the direct impress of our thoughts and acts upon them. God acts through us, as us, and it works perfectly. We set the tone of our expression, and Mind delivers the result. It works like clockwork, perfectly. If we fill our mind with beliefs and thoughts of negativity, we can hardly expect to have a positive outcome. God does not discern the degree of positivity or negativity of thoughts, or even the outcome. In effect, Mind delivers what we have asked for by our thoughts and beliefs. The Bible puts it this way, “God is so pure, and He cannot behold inequity.” If you get a lump of coal in your stocking this Christmas, it is not a punishment; it merely means that your actions or deeds had a lump of coal as a consequence of your actions, rather then receive the shiny new bicycle you desired. Don’t blame Santa and don’t blame God. Whether we knew it or not, we have directed the Universe to provide for us. Provided you are alive, which may seem obvious, then you have a degree of Spirit in Life and the more spirit you have brings a greater portion of life. Enthusiasm, whether in thoughts or actions, generates a fuller expression of life. Contrary wise, the lack of enthusiasm sucks the life out of any experience or situation. Luke-warm in-put equals luke-warm output. We are emotional beings, which means energy in action. Put your energy into your ideas, your thoughts and your actions. The good we seek in any Endeavour is not at our fingertips, but in our use of Mind. Choose the thoughts and words we utilize wisely; they amount to your requests for your spiritual self. Nobody can argue that God is not Divine. So, God being Divine, which translates to Ageless, Birthless and Deathless, all Power, all Being, and all there is. That God made man in the image and after the likeness of Himself gives rise to our own divinity. God in us, as us, is us. Our divinity may be on the micro-scale, while God is on the macro-scale, but that still makes us divine. This means we direct our experience and if we don’t like the current experience, we can change it. Again, I say, “You are Perfect, Spiritual, and Divine.” You don’t need special clothes or secret rituals. You are special, unique and beautiful. You are living the life you have chosen. If you would like to make a better choice, come to church and we’ll help you formulate a whole new demonstration of Spirit. Choose well, my friend. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
