Camping Traditions 2021 Respect and enjoy, and leave it better than you found it

Eastern Sierra, CA—It’s the height of summer and camping trips are the topic of the season. Larger than usual numbers of visitors are coming to the area to experience outdoor activities, and for many visitors, this might be their first time on a camping adventure. No matter what category of visitor you might be, or resident, looking for a new way to enjoy the area you live in, there are guidelines which can help everyone to remember to respect and enjoy your time here, and leave the forest or wilderness or campground in better shape than you found it.

“Remember: Mountain Safety Is No Accident” Have a workable plan for your outdoor adventures. Know your style of camping (are you tent, trailer / motorhome, backpacker?), and outfit yourself for what you’ll need. Educate yourself if you are not experienced. Consider traffic, trash, disposal of waste products / gray water, parking, and staying on the trail. Be

Locally, in Bishop, CA, there are numerous sources of information and resources for camping, RVing, hiking, climbing, backpacking, bicycling, and every other kind of outdoor activity. Allen’s Outdoor, south end of Bishop on Main Street (the Red Horse folks), has everything you can think of for RVs, camping and backpacking. The staff is very knowledgeable about repairs and replacement parts, and the store carries supplies for animals too. Reagan’s Sporting Goods, Main Street, Bishop, is another good source of camping, fishing, and hunting gear and information. The staff at Reagan’s are current with their information, and they are knowledgeable in the many aspects of fishing and hunting. Talking to experienced people can teach you valuable skills and adds to the enjoyment of camping in the long run. Many happy trails to you all!

Local SAR teams are experiencing large numbers of people in the backcountry, many say “they are experienced,” who really are not prepared for their actions. Advice: Do not hike alone. Stay with your group. Tell someone where you are going, and leave a note in your vehicle. Be prepared for medical emergencies. Check the weather. Carry water. Know how to use your gear. Safety is your responsibility. Helicopters are not an ambulance in the wilderness. Search and Rescue teams are not your backup plan. “Remember: Mountain safety is no accident.” (Inyo SAR)

Camping resources abound in the Eastern Sierra, and some good guides or advice from local businesses can enhance any adventure. Knowing, for example, that you can have a trailer spotted for you, and all of the expenses of driving a trailer here can be moved to your extended stay, can make for a better vacation experience. Knowing reservations are required for most places you are going to stay or visit (for example, Yosemite National Park requires reservations), and obtaining the permits, can give you a more relaxed travel agenda. Knowing that campfires are ONLY PERMITTED in designated campgrounds can save you from a fine or unintended fire. Knowing that you must have a valid fire permit to have a camp stove or gas lantern in dispersed camping situations, can save you from a fine or unintended fire. Campfire permits are free to adults.
