Hobby Out of Control Bishop’s Apple Hill Ranch – A Sagebrush to Ranch to Market Story By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—Sitting at the top of Sierra Grande Street in Wilkerson, CA, south of Bishop, CA, is a 10-acre ranch, with scores of fruit trees, vegetable gardening plots, ponds, and assorted wildlife. Prior to its inception, in 1988, this expanse of land was sagebrush habitat, not unlike most of the wide-open spaces in the Great Basin region of the country. It took a bit of ingenuity and a lot of sweat equity to turn this expanse of land into the Apple Hill Ranch, but Rick DeVore and his family have kept after this dream, until today, Apple Hill Ranch produces enough products to sell to the general public and local grocery stores. As DeVore says, with a laugh, it is a “hobby out of control.” DeVore is a real estate agent, and is the owner of Hometown Properties, he explains. DeVore once owned a couple of Chevron stations (Mammoth Lakes and Lee Vining, CA), and he says he got his real estate license in the late 1980s. He and his wife also previously owned the enchanting Rainbow Tarns in Mono County, before the Apple Hill Ranch property. They were looking to relocate in the Bishop area, when the Wilkerson property came up for sale. The piece of land was a total mess, DeVore describes, with junk all over, and with time he was able to remove the debris, after making countless runs to the land fill. Rawson Creek runs through the property, and it's part of the reason the property is sustainable for the agricultural enterprise. And, the soil and amendments, “compost,” (which they sell) are the other element to the landscape's flourishing nature. “We Sell Everything We Grow”

fruits and vegetables adapted to the eastern Sierra. “Everything is heirloom.” Heirloom or heritage fruits and vegetables can trace history back for decades, and are open-pollinated. Heirloom seeds connect us with our heritage and collective past as communities, while many people have traditions of passing these seeds down to their family and community members...perhaps for hundreds of years.

Bishop's Apple Hill Ranch is a wonderful place to spend time with family or friends, picking your own fruits and vegetables. Rick DeVore, owner, is still working on the 32-year-old business, which he says, is a “hobby out of control.” Apple Hill Ranch is brimming with fruit and nut trees (1,700 trees to be exact), and USDA certified organic produce. The appeal of buying locally comes from the idea of our communities' food security and sustainability, with some resiliency thrown in for good measure. DeVore says, “we sell everything we grow.” This list of products includes: apples, apricots, Brussel sprouts, beans, blackberries, cabbage, carrots, cherries, eggs, figs, fennel, garlic, herbs, kale, lemons, onions, pears, peaches, peppers, rhubarb, raspberries, squash, tomatoes, tomatillos, and walnuts...for starters. There are 1,700 fruit and nut trees, 10 varieties of peaches

alone, 15 kinds of fig trees from around the world, and DeVore adds, “we're totally organic,” with a USDA (US Department of Agriculture) certification. To be USDA certified “organic” is no small feat: organic is the growing practice employed, meaning no synthetic fertilizers, no genetically modified organisms (No GMOs), and the animals only eat organic feed, and the animals must have access to the outdoors. Volunteers help DeVore with the tasks, and these are people with years and years of devotion to Apple Hill Ranch. They help plant trees, they construct barriers to keep animals out of the crops, they irrigate orchards, they pick onions, carrots, peaches and apples, and they direct the visiting customers to the best places for them to pick their own produce. They also help DeVore deliver his products to local markets, like Manor Market in Bishop, CA and the Mono Market in Lee Vining, CA. Apple Hill Ranch is open to the public, by reservation, and you pay a flat rate to go and spend time with your family on the property, picking your own fruits and vegetables. It's easy to get lost in the beauty of the Apple Hill Ranch, with its ponds, water features, gazebo in view of a pond with water lilies and Koi fish, foot bridge over Rawson Creek (built from old tungsten mining towers), peacocks and pea hens strolling about, fragrant Mimosa trees blossoming, and views of the Owens Valley and Sierra. It's a great 32-year-old story, and it continues to be the “hobby out of control.” And, it's hard to see where DeVore will be able to ever complete his hobby, especially when he's out grafting five more cuttings of heritage apple trees together...making a new apple variety? The “DeVore” apple may be on the horizon folks....
