High Sierra Camping 2022

Much stays the same in the back country, when it comes to camping

Eastern Sierra, CA—It’s remained, for the most part, very much the same, when it comes to camping in the remote back country of the High Sierra. For more than 150 years, people have been pulling over by the waysides and pitching a tent in the tall pine trees. Postcards from these remote resorts and stopovers show the history of the forest, trails, and towns, lakes, streams and creeks, but people are the reason why these camping spots stay iconic for the region. Even now, it’s possible to camp for weeks on end, and not pay a dime for your stay (US Forest Service campgrounds, 14 day limit), or the opportunities nearby. Mono County offers some of the most remote regions to camp in, and there are also resorts, with a store and cafe, boat rentals, and opportunities for other adventures, using your campsite as a base. One of the highest / alpine-like regions to camp in, car / truck / trailer / motor home camping is the Virginia Lakes basin, and surrounding areas, like Green Creek. Several campgrounds (Lower and Upper Virginia Creek and Trumbull Lake) offer extended stays, and although the altitude is high (9,000 feet), the old-fashioned camping spots take you back to simpler days, when just a tent and a few supplies was all you needed to spend a couple of weeks in the forest. Bear boxes are provided for campers’ supplies (it’s the law to use a bear box, and not your vehicle for food storage. Period), and the campgrounds are patrolled by Mono County law enforcement, to make sure everyone stays legal.

The Virginia Lakes drainage offers unparalleled camping spots, and with the Virginia Lakes Resort and lakes less than five miles away, campers can play, stay, boat, fish, dine, shop, and have a good time for weeks on end.

With over 160 developed sites to stay in, in Inyo and Mono Counties, you can choose to “boondock” / solitary camping it or stay within a five- mile radius of amenities, and enjoy the best of both worlds. Camp Like a Pro in the Eastern Sierra offers great guidelines for beginners, and reminders for more experienced campers. Know before you go, pick campsites which are the best fit for your experience, and pack it in / pack it out / or bury it deep, which refers to all your trash and poo.... No campfires means camping in California with camp cook stoves, gas fuel only. While propane gas grills are popular, you can’t fix a pot of coffee with them. Get a California Fire Permit, for free, online, and be prepared to camp with a gas cook stove. Also be prepared to leave your campfire evenings up to portable / solar powered DVD player, and old westerns. NO CAMPFIRES! This means, you’re not really needing to bring or look for wood for campfire cooking, and in private developed camping sites, you can buy what you need. Campgrounds are accommodating to all comers, and many of the first-come, first-served, old-fashioned campsites are possible, if you get into a site during the

Hit the camping trail, in the High Sierra, when the heat in the valley becomes unbearable, and head for a cool camping site in the Sierra Nevada.

Remember, NO CAMPFIRES! That means you need to bring games (cards, board games and checkers), your portable DVD player and old western movies, or other things to hang out during the evenings with while you are camping. S’mores and hot chocolate over the camp cook stove, only!

National Night Out set for Aug. 2 Area first responders to host an evening of fun in Bishop

Local law enforcement and first responders in the Eastern Sierra are continuing a nationwide tradition by hosting the National Night Out event in Bishop. “National Night Out is a longstanding community policing event that allows for the opportunity to develop partnerships and true camaraderie between first responders and the community they serve,” said Richard Standridge, Bishop Police Chief. The National Night Out, which is a family-friendly event for all ages, will be celebrated from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, in Holland Park, on Church St. behind Bishop City Hall. The National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet their local law enforcement and first responders and spend a summer evening with friends and neighbors. Everyone is invited to enjoy a hot dog, music, and games, as well as displays from their local emergency responders. Representatives from several agencies will be participating, including the Bishop Police Department, Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Inyo County Probation, the Bishop office of the California Highway Patrol and the Bishop Fire Department. Started in August of 1984 through National Association of Town Watch, the first event involved 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states. Today, National Night Out provides an opportunity for first responders and neighbors to come together under positive circumstances and enjoy some community fun. Now in its 38th year, 16 thousand communities in all 50 states, territories and United States military bases participate in the event. This is Bishop’s fourth year participating in the National Night Out, and it has become a summertime tradition both first responders and the community can look forward to.
