By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Independence, CA—The Fourth of July celebrations seem poetic, patriotic, and appropriate in a town named “Independence.” History hangs a lot on that word, especially in America, where the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, declared this country's (the original 13 colonies, which represented the United States in 1776: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia) independence, ahead of the Revolutionary War (began with Battle of Lexington and Concord, in 1775, and ended with the Battle of Yorktown in 1781; final peace Treaty of Paris, in 1783) from the British.

Free Fishing Day on Fourth of July The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Free Fishing day takes place on the Fourth of July. Anyone who wishes to try their hand at catching a trout dinner can put a pole in the water. There are regular regulations to abide by: dawn to dusk fishing; five fish limit a day, and ten in possession. Shop local at our Main Street fishing / guiding / and sporting goods businesses. Klondike Lake Opens for 2020 Season From July 3 to September 7 (Labor Day), Klondike Lake will be open for limited public boating use on weekend days only: Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 9 a.m. to sunset. At this time spots are limited and on a first come, first served basis. Precautions are being taken to guard against invasive mussels, and therefore all motorized watercraft must be inspected before being launched into Klondike Lake. Due to COVID-19, face coverings and social distancing are required. We will take additional measures during boat inspections to protect boat owners and LADWP employees. Boat access to Klondike is free this summer period and subject to change for future seasons. Access for motorized watercraft being transported by car, truck and/or trailer will be allowed for a one-hour period between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the gate entrance in order to accommodate inspections. After watercraft have been inspected and granted access, visitors can enjoy the lake for as long as they want that day, while practicing safe social distancing. Please note, recreational users with smaller, nonmotorized watercraft that are not transported with a trailer can access the lake at any time.
