By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “Dedicated to free and equal access to information, knowledge, independent life-long learning, cultural enrichment, and the joys of reading for our diverse community”--Free Public Libraries in the United States Eastern Sierra, CA—Our local libraries are open once more for curbside pickup, and for many in our remote region of the country, this is good news indeed. The Inyo County libraries, six of them (Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, Furnace Creek and Tecopa), function for the benefit of the communities they serve, and Inyo County's libraries have new acquisition pages online, as well as more e-services available for those with access to computers and the internet. Recently, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Inyo County's libraries received $5,000 for electronic resources / collections, and this is allowing for more titles to be available. For those who do not have internet, the old-fashioned library card and check out system applies, only people pickup their books curbside. Bishop's library hours Tuesday and Thursday noon to 8 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. To 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m. Hours vary at the different library branches. “We're still putting books on the shelves,” says Emily Lanphear, with the Bishop library.

“Kids can stay safe and cool this summer with the Book and Craft in a Bag. Inyo County Free Library, along with Healthy Communities of Southern Inyo County, will be giving out a children's book and a fun project three times this summer. At each giveaway time there are books and crafts for three different age levels,” the press release says. “The three titles available at this giveaway time are: “A Color of His Own” for Pre-K and Kindergarten; “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” for ages sixeight, and “Charlotte's Web” for ages nine and up. Quantities are limited, so first come, first served. Call your local library branch on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, July 28-July 30, to reserve your Book in a Bag by giving your name, phone number, and which title is desired. Inyo County's Unique Library Services Inyo County's library system has been in place since 1913, and serves over 18,000 people. Headquartered in Independence, CA, and under the direction of Nancy Masters, the library system also has the unique California Revealed program. This is a state library initiative and in partnership with other local heritage groups. The goal of the program is to digitize, preserve, and provide online archival materials, such as newspapers, books, photographs, and recordings. These digitized materials are Stories of the Golden State, and online at Calisphere or www.californiarevealed.org, or Inyo County's library site. Inyo County's collection is a delightful stroll through history (1880s-1990s), and some of the oral histories do really reveal the nature of the Eastern Sierra and its residents. California's library system is funded (61 percent) out of the state's General Fund, which filters down to the 95 percent local funding through the county. Benjamin Franklin is credited with the first subscription library in America, and it was member supported in 1731. Franklin's The Library Company of Philadelphia inspired the free public library system of today. The United States' Library of Congress is the world's largest public free library (established in 1800), and the Library of Congress is also the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. The British burned the library down in 1814, and Thomas Jefferson's private library was procured to replace the burned out book shelves to create a new library. Today, there are over 170 million items in the Library of Congress.
