Fourth of July 2019 Eastern Sierra’s Independence Day / Weekend Celebrations America's Declaration of Independence “When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the Earth, the separate and equal station to which laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.” Thomas Jefferson is credited with much of the writing of the Declaration of Independence, and the signers included Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Hancock.

Photo by The Hired Pen By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Independence, CA—The Fourth of July celebrations seem poetic, patriotic, and appropriate in a town named “Independence.” History hangs a lot on that word, especially in America, where the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, declared this country's (the original 13 colonies, which represented the United States in 1776: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia) independence, ahead of the Revolutionary War (began with Battle of Lexington and Concord, in 1775, and ended with the Battle of Yorktown in 1781; final peace Treaty of Paris, in 1783) from the British.
We'll start with Independence, CA. “The Stars Are Out in Independence”: All day celebrations mark Inyo County's official seat of government. Dehy Park is the center of action during the day. By the dawn's early light, at 6:15 AM, the American Legion raises the American flag at Dehy Park. The Walk / Run at the Owens Valley School begins at 7 AM. Then the Lions Club has its traditional Pancake Breakfast from 6:30-9 AM, and the parade begins at 10 AM. The Arts and Crafts Show is on the courthouse lawn from 8 AM-throughout the day. The big Pioneer Methodist Pie Social at Dehy Park takes place at Noon, followed by a Spelling Bee at 1 PM. Get into the Owens Valley Unified School District's pool for a swim from 1-6 PM, or join the old time games at Dehy Park, at 2 PM. There is deep pit barbecue, until the meat is gone, at Dehy Park from 4-6 PM, and the Grand Event of the evening, fireworks over the Independence Airport, at dark. Info: Independence Civic Club. Once upon a time, it was Camp Independence, and an active U.S. Army post (1862-1877). Today, this site is under the control of the Fort Independence Indian Community of Paiute Indians. There is a historical land marker establishing a bit of the history of the camp. In response to the Owens Valley Indian Wars, Camp Independence was created on July 4, 1862, and later it was a post during the American Civil War. After the disbanding of the military camp, the native Paiutes and Shoshones, who had long held land around the camp, were given land by the US government (1915-1916).

BISHOP The Paiute Palace Casino's Fourth of July Event is Wednesday, July 3, along US Highway 395, and the fireworks get started at dark. July 4th, Join the Fun in the Bishop City Park all day, with shady spots to get out of the heat, and later, perhaps the final fireworks show at the Bishop Airport. This is the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department's 67th year of offering a huge fireworks display. However, with the coming of commercial flights to the airport in the next year or so, this event may be the finale....The Bishop High School girls' soccer team will be collecting donations for this free entry event, and there is a 50 /50 drawing going on too. Everyone is encouraged to bring along the barbecues, sparklers, and do some “tail-gating.” Gates open at 4 PM and the main show starts at 9 PM.
MAMMOTH LAKES The annual 4th of July parade down Main Street in Mammoth Lakes begins at 11 AM-1 PM, followed by the POPS at the Mammoth Creek Park, from 1-2:30 PM. There are also events taking place at the Mammoth Museum, from 1-6 PM, and the Village all day. Yep, they are still skiing / snowboarding on Mammoth Mountain too. The evening crescendos by Crowley Lake, with the fireworks display, from 9:15-9:45 PM. The show, “Sky Concert,” promises to propel more than 737 shells into the High Sierra's sky.
BRIDGEPORT The old-fashioned Fourth of July celebrations in Bridgeport start on Wednesday, July 3, with everything Americana happening. This is the town's 157th Fourth of July Celebration!! Crafts, SEE CELEBRATIONS CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Living Creatively The title of this article is a misnomer, because we are all living creatively, however: there are those that aware of this and actively direct the creative forces in their life, and then there are those that are unaware and take potluck in the field of creativity. The difference between these two positions is not merely the ole’ optimist/ pessimist arrangement, but a self-appreciating mode of operation contrasted with a selfdepreciation frame worth. I can’t speak for anyone else, but those tirades from the pulpits of the some orthodox churches, I had attended, where the theme was I didn’t deserve redemption, and I was lower than a snakes belly, did not help my self-esteem. Sure, I was grateful for Jesus, but I really had not done anything bad enough that he should go to the cross for me. Besides it seems I would have to die to improve conditions. Where is the fun in that? No doubt, those sermons were intended to help me in my selection of my final resting place, but personally, I wasn’t ready to pick out my plot of ground, just yet. I wanted to live, and live well. Living well does not mean having unlimited funds, a fancy car or two and being a step ahead of your neighbors; it means healthy living, where you not only have a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy outlook on life. It seems the only way to attain all of that is to get on the God bandwagon. Ernest Holmes supplied the formula to hop aboard. PERFECT GOD, PERFECT MAN, PERFECT BEING Perfection can only create perfection. Since man is a creation of God he must be perfect. Following the theme of perfection, man invokes perfect conditions and perfect outcomes to his thoughts and desires. “Wait one moment,” you may ask. “What about all those thing less than perfect in my life? Where did they come from” These are where we need to step up to the plate and take responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions. What is in your world is a perfect rendition of what you have directed Mind to create. You see, God never promised you a rose garden, unless, of course, you wanted a rose garden. There seems to be many reasons people don’t launch into a regimen of change in their life to improve the quality of their life. They may say they don’t know enough or they are too set in their ways. They may not believe it will do any good, or possibly they are lazy, but to those that desire a more enriching life, start by looking up instead of down. Even the worst conditions have and element of good in it. Seek out the good and give thanks for it. See a sunset or sun rise and personalize it. It is your gift from the Universe. Know you are worthy of good and very good because of your perfect heritage. Stay out of negative conversations, pity parties or bitch-sessions. The earth and the fullness thereof is yours for the taking. Grab hold and love it, live it and enjoy the ride. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
