Eastside Summer Short, Shorter and Shortest Excursions

Eastern Sierra, CA-- The summer heat’s on, gas prices aren’t cheap, and it can be difficult to trim your summertime excursions down to fit your budget. There aren’t too many ways to escape some of the cost factors, but taking trips around a compass circle of about 100 miles or so, can happen on all types of expense accounts.

Center excursions: Use Bishop, CA as the hub, or center of the compass.

The Owens River runs through a number of spots around Bishop, and in some places during the summertime, it’s not uncommon to find older kids playing and swinging on the rope swings along the river. Inner Tubing or floating the Owens River are also very popular during the summer, and there are a few places in town which sell the big tubes for floating. You must know how to swim to float!!! Brown’s Town Campground greets you as you come into Bishop, CA, from the Los Angeles (south), and it’s hard to miss its historic-western town charm. The grassy area out front, playground, old town area with local stories, and the shady cottonwood trees, with picturesque views of the Sierra Nevada from the campground, well, it’s a welcoming spot to hang out for some summer picnicking fun. Brown’s Town has a cafe, and store, with ice cream, homemade pies, and summertime sandwiches. Beer, wine and souvenirs are available, as well as other local favorites.

Bishop City Park features cool, shady summer walks down Bishop Creek, a walk onto the pond’s gazebo, feeding the ducks, and swimming at the park pool, with a big slide. Walkable, driveable to parking areas, and free summer music on Monday evenings, in the front of the park / gazebo area.

Apple Hill Ranch in Wilkerson, CA (just south of Bishop) is a local, seasonal ranch featuring fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, honey, jams and jellies, and an astonishingly refreshing place to visit during the summertime. Check out their hours, and what’s in season for picking or purchasing. Bishop has miles of canals, and offshoots of Bishop Creek. Fishing is allowed with license, and when the season is appropriate. Summer fishing in the evenings and early mornings can be found on many popular stretches, and most of these fishing spots are walkable and driveable to for parking and picnicking in the shade of the cottonwoods.

EAST Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site is another great spot to spend the day, picnicking and checking out the many exhibits and this western frontier train depot. Large shady and grassy areas make it possible to spend leisurely time visiting all of the unique buildings, trains, and the kids will love the space to run around, and play.

WEST Driving west from Bishop, CA, and into Bishop Creek drainage, you’ll find Bishop Creek Lodge, with its mountain lodge feel, store, and restaurant and bar. There are cabins to rent, and fish to catch in a number of premier angling spots in the Sierra Nevada. Lake Sabrina and South Lake are nearby, as well as North Lake, and Bishop Creek itself. Cool mountain air and close proximity to Bishop, make this area a summertime locals favorite. Picnicking and camping are available also, with a number of choice spots to hang out for a day or two.

Mountain asters and wildflowers, in general, are coming into full season in the high country. Keep your eyes peeled for these beauties, they don’t stay around long. SEE ON PAGE 13

NORTH Benton Hot Springs and the town of Benton, is a part of a historic mining town and one of the oldest existing spots in Mono County, CA. The Paiute Native Americans were regular visitors and lived in the area long before the settlers and miners arrived. Benton Hot Springs was once a part of the Wells Fargo Stage Coach line to Bodie, and San Francisco, and has been a western town since 1864, when silver was found nearby. Today, Benton Hot Springs has an Inn, hot tubs, and cabins to stay / rent, with soaking for some of the guest rooms. The Carson and Colorado Railroad, the same trains that came through Laws, near Bishop, came into Benton Station in the 1880s, about four miles away toward US Highway 6. Benton Station is still open for business as a cafe, store, and gas station now.

SOUTH Independence, CA is Inyo County’s seat of government, and its courthouse just turned 100 years old. This town has its legends, and the Eastern California Museum has many of the county’s unique treasures for the public to view. Think Dinosaur bones and mountaineers. Then, turn your attention to another uncommon part of this tiny hamlet. Mary Austin’s house, on 253 Market St. (California Historical marker No. 229). Austin was a local author (1900s) of some note, and she started her writing career in eastern California by publishing,“The Land of Little Rain.” Still in print since 1903, this fine work of hers is considered a “classic” in literature.
