Businesses Advance on Openings in Fall 2020 Bishop’s Paiute Tribal Casino Expansion and Gas Station and Convenience Store Construction Move Forward By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Bishop, CA—The Bishop Paiute Tribe's casino expansion and gas station and convenience store construction continue during the current pandemic, and progress on both projects is visible each week, as the summer rolls along. With plans to open both new businesses in the fall of 2020, the tribe's hopes are to create business incubators for the tribal members, and provide places for new businesses which would be important to the tribe. Currently, the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation (BPDC) has a number of businesses under its management, including the three and a half acres of land under lease by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Bishop, CA (opened in 2003). This particular relationship is with the U.S. Department of Interior. The managed properties also include the state of California's Department of Motor Vehicles office in Bishop, CA (opened in 2006). The BPDC considers these properties a part of its Commercial Park. The BPDC manages a mini storage and RV / boat storage area, and the Toiyabe Indian Health Project complex is also within the Commercial Park. The Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation broke ground August 22, 2019 on a $16.5 million Casino Expansion Project and the $6.5 million West Line Street Gas Station and Retail Center project, the tribe said in a press release. “The Casino Expansion Project is one of the largest projects the Bishop Paiute Tribe has undertaken in some time. The casino expansion is going to be attached to the existing casino to the south. The expansion will add 28,000 SF of new floor space with a capacity for up to 500 gaming machines, new restaurant, bar and deli, and outdoor patios.” The new casino will be called Wanaaha when it opens this fall. “The new gas station project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) which awarded a $2.1 million grant to the Bishop Paiute Tribe to apply towards the infrastructure of a retail center and business incubator to be located at the NE corner of See Vee Lane and West Line Street (SR 168). The remaining funds are being provided by the Bishop Paiute Tribe. This project will provide up to 98 jobs and allow tribal members to pursue their own businesses. With the support from EDA, the Tribe can more closely realize self-determination,” the press release continued. “In addition, we will be adding six new gas pumps which includes four standard and two RV / truck pumps, a 6,000 SF convenience store with deli and indoor and outdoor seating, an 8,000 SF-six unit retail center and car wash.” The Bishop Paiute Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe located on its 879-acre Bishop Paiute Reservation in Inyo County, CA. The Reservation was formed under Congressional Act 5299, P.L. No. 43, April 20, 1937.
