Sustaining Our Fun Celebrate Community Summer Solstice Party at newly energized Tri-County Fairgrounds’ stage By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The Summer Solstice, Friday, June 21, is the longest day of sunshine in the Northern Hemisphere, and that means long hours to enjoy being outdoors, watching leisurely sunsets. Trading on the power of sunshine, for many years / volts, Scott and Matthew Berger, the father and son team / owner, of Berger Solar Electric are celebrating the first day of summer by inviting the communities of the eastern Sierra to a free Summer Solstice Party at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, on Friday, June 21, from 4-8 PM. Familyfriendly environment to dance, sit on the grass and listen to music, or stroll the shady spots at the Fairgrounds. Bright rays of sunshine frame the High Sierra, and this is the backdrop of the Tri-County Fairgrounds' newly revamped and energized main outdoor stage. It's also the logo for Berger Solar Electric, and the company donated its solar expertise, paint, and electrical parts to getting the older equipment (some of it 40-50 years old) and outlets ready for action. Musicians are thrilled to have the new arrangements / digs to play, and Jen McGuire, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Tri-County Fairgrounds says, “I'm excited about the Summer Solstice Party, it's a perfect way to start the summer! We invite the community to come out and join us for this free event. This is a the first of many community events at the AllNew Berger Solar Electric Stage. We want to offer the community a place to make memories and celebrate with family and friends.” Luckily, the Tri-County Fairgrounds' new stage area has ample places to enjoy this Summer Solstice Party, and local businesses are throwing in their best efforts by making donations. Manor Market is bringing wine and ice, and Back Alley Bowling is providing food and beer to adults (21-years-of-age and older). There are openings for others to give to the party as well.
Watching the Fun Come to Light Scott and Matthew Berger, and Jen McGuire, have waited a bit to see some of their accomplishments at the stage come to light. The Sierra Reader spent some time with the group, as the gears of this latest, revamped community venue gained more traction. By utilizing the solar power they installed at their company headquarters to power the company's all-electric vehicle (ability to drive 300 miles on one charge), Matthew notes they have been making good on their claims to being the solar people / sustainable energy enthusiasts. grounds' stage make-over is just another bright ray of sunshine, sustaining fun for all of us. Three counties use the Tri-County Fairgrounds: Inyo, Mono, and Alpine Counties. Two bands will treat us to classic rock, blues, R & B, funk, a harp / harmonica duo, and acoustic guitar riffs. Eastern Sierra-based musicians Mike “Hurricane” Hoover and Bob Snow take the stage as the Bad Weather Boyz. Many in the area have seen them perform at The Roadhouse in Bishop, (at left) Bob Snow and Hurricane Hoover, and many other venues in Mammoth. Long-time jam-band locals, these harp guys mix it up with acoustic guitar tunes, too. Playing gigs all over the eastern Sierra, The Andrew Webber Blues Band comes prepared to wow us with the big sound of a large blues band. Mammoth's venues are their regular stomping ground, and they bring their own variety of rock, R & B, and funk to the dance floor. Look for (from left) Bob Snow on the harp; Andrew Webber on guitar; Dave Thomas playing drums, and Ronnie Bartley on bass.
Join in the Summer Solstice Party fun, Friday, June 21, from 4-8 PM, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds' Main Stage. Berger Solar Electric's father and son team, (left) Scott and Matthew, sit on the TriCounty Fairgrounds' Main Stage, which was revamped and re-energized by Berger Solar Electric this year. From left: Jen McGuire, Tri-County Fairgrounds, CAO, with Scott and Matthew Berger, planning the Summer Solstice Party at the Main Stage,TriCounty Fairgrounds. Photos by The Hired Pen

World rhythm music series at T-Bar Social Club The T-Bar Social Club and Mono Market have forged a partnership to produce a monthly world music show featuring bands that will perform a diverse range of musical genres. The mutual goal is to bring global rhythms to our local community. “With every turn, paddle stroke, and pedal push I make here in the Eastern Sierra, I’ve got an African beat in my head,” said Chris Lizza, CEO of Mono Market and former host of KMMT’s High Sierra Rhythm Safari. “With the T-Bar Social Club’s intimate venue, supreme sound system and commitment to the community, I feel that we have a great opportunity to get people dancing together to a universal beat.” Kicking off the World Rhythm Music Series on Friday, June 13 is Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca. Hailing from Zaire in Northern Angola and growing up in Democratic Republic of Congo, Ricardo and his band will bring an afro-cuban-rhumba-salsa dance party to June Lake. Following up on Saturday, July 13 is SambaDa, who are widely known as the West Coast’s best Brazilian dance band. On August 9, Delta Nove brings their signature World Funk sound, combining a mixture of a psychedelic funk rock concert, a Brazilian Carnival and Mardi Gras. “When Chris approached us with the concept to host more world music, we were thrilled at the idea.” said Jamie Schectman, T-Bar Social Club President. “Our Talent Buyer is lining up some other exciting global acts that you wouldn’t typically expect to see in June Lake.” Over the next year, the World Rhythm Music Series will showcase one multi-cultural musician or band each month.

Eastern Sierra Foundation scholarship deadline June 13
ESCC student graduates receiving the CCCC Academic Senate Honors Student 3.75 and above l to r: Lauren Harris, Sharon Nelson, Gloria Solorio, Guadalupe Orozco, Gladys Gonzalez Reynoso, and Kaitlyn Morgan. On Friday, May 3rd, 80 students graduated from Cerro Coso Community College’s Eastern Sierra College Center earning 121 degrees and certificates. Students received 88 associate degrees and 36 certificates in 24 different disciplines including; child development, administration of justice, anthropology, human services, liberal arts math and science, liberal arts social and behavioral science, psychology, nursing, medical assisting, computer science, business, management, and kinesiology. The Eastern Sierra Foundation makes a difference in education. The Foundation awarded 53 scholarships in the 2018-2019 school year and was pleased to help 16 graduate. Julie Faber, ESF Board Member said, “The Eastern Sierra Foundation is committed to assisting our community to gain the resources they need to make positive changes in their lives. Through this scholarship program, we are dedicated to helping students attend debt-free college not only to achieve their dreams but to also inspire our community young and old to excel in the classroom, volunteer and give back, creating future leaders.” Prospective Cerro Coso Bishop students may obtain scholarship applications at the Bishop College campus in the Admissions and Records Office or at the Counseling Office. Deadline is June 13th, don’t wait! “We are very grateful to the funders for making these scholarships possible each year and to Deanna Campbell and her staff at Cerro Coso Community College for all their time, support and dedication to manage the ESF scholarships,” said Jeff Griffiths. “Scholarships from the Eastern Sierra Foundation fund 100% of tuition and $300 towards books for ANY Inyo County resident attending the Bishop campus full-time, simultaneously supporting our local students and our local college.” Since the fall of 2003, the ESF has ensured that all Inyo County residents have access to college through the scholarship program. Due to the generosity of local donors, the ESF has awarded over 1315 scholarships! These scholarships, worth over $1,315,000 have supported students attending Cerro Coso Community College’s Bishop Campus. The ESF continues strong fundraising momentum to transform the Bishop campus and support all community members’ access to higher education. Anyone wishing to make a donation can make their check payable to the “Eastern Sierra Foundation,” and note “Scholarships” on the memo line. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 1145 Bishop, California 93515. Please contact Jeff Griffiths, ESF President at 760-937-0072 for more information.

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
All is Love, yet All is Law Many psychologists, philosophers, theologians and many others have attempted to give us a definition or explanation of love, and some of these are beautiful and additionally insightful. While dealing with the emotion, they often did not give their explanation of the mental aspect of love. Love is a wonderful, creative emotion, however; love without mind involved cannot be sustained Sigmund Freud said, “Emotions must be handled or they will handle you.” He was not saying we should become automatons, but to include intelligence with love. Love may put a spark in your step, but you still have watch where you step. I could not begin to tell you how wonderful I feel when I love, neither would I impose on yours, but the wisdom and intelligence to maintain and sustain that love must couple with the emotion. Jesus told his followers to love each other as he had loved them. That kind of love is all encompassing, without prejudice or bias to others. If God is love, and He or She is, then God would love all of creation. People may follow what Jesus said, and love the neighbor to the south, but hate the one to the north. Their maybe good reason to dislike what the neighbor has or has not done, but there is no reason not to love them. Everyone has choice as a right of passage. We can choose how we express emotions, our behaviors and our actions. My teacher used to say, “If you are not loving, you are hating. Raymond Charles Barker said that love and hate are two emotions on the end of the same stick Love is a creative emotion which has to be in relationship to others- or the dog or cat, which is maintained with wisdom. Barker says, “Even the dog has to be disciplined, and even you and I as adults have to be disciplined.” Some try to avoid love by being busy all their waking hours, or intellectualizing love but if it is not expressed, the energy can come out with other emotions you really don’t want. We can always increase our capacity to love. Actually the process is easy, but the time involved depends largely in how imbedded the fear or lack of love has been in you. Say to yourself, “I am Love.” Repeat it periodically throughout the day. Don’t think you are suddenly going to experience rainbows and unicorns. Just know that you opening the door to a marvelous experience. Love with wisdom does not hurt. It isn’t always flowery, like a greeting card, but it is being the best for everyone involved. In Religious Science, we don’t deal with wishes, but I wish everyone could feel, as I do, because I love. Now get busy loving! The unicorns are right around the corner. I double dare you to not take a peak. Its your opportunity to be all that you can be! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
