Fundraiser Concert Join a benefit and music by the Folk Collection for Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance, the Hospice of the Owens Valley, and the Sierra Communities Aviation Mentoring Program By Christina Reed The Hired Pen “Believe you can and you are half way there”-Theodore Roosevelt Eastern Sierra, CA—Three mighty important programs are receiving some attention and support this month as the Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance, The Hospice of the Owens Valley, and the Sierra Communities Aviation Mentoring Program (SCAMP) present a benefit concert / fundraiser on Saturday, June 29, beginning at 7 PM, at the Nazarene Church in Bishop. Tickets can be purchased through www.brownpapertickets.com, or by contacting Hospice of the Owens Valley, or Pioneer Home Health Care, Tony Unger at 661-510-6351. Tickets will also be available at the event. The Folk Collection, the trio of Tony Unger, Ed Labowitz, and Mike Sirota will bring a range

of songs from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s to the event, with guitars and banjo in hand, the group has a family show they will share on this special evening.

Three For the Communities The Eastern Sierra Cancer Alliance helps people in the Owens Valley navigate the difficulties of cancer, and helps families with emotional, financial, and support services. ESCA is a non-profit, with its inception in 1999, by Patricia Ramirez. Established in 2001, ESCA serve all cancer individuals, of all ages, and there are several resources they provide on a regular basis. Ramirez says ESCA has been working diligently on forming a “Angel Mentorship” program that will provide one-on-one peer support to the community members having cancer. This type of support can be beneficial and rewarding for both persons

June 20 – 26, 2019 Dream” program designed to match people with cancer with people for a passion for the outdoors, like fly fishing lessons, or art instruction, or other life passions, and ESCA also provide weekly cancer support groups the first Tuesday of every month at its office, across the street from the Jill Kinmont Boothe campus. Ramirez says, “The amazing support from communities” keeps ESCA's funding going, with donations from the California High School Rodeo finalists / participants in June, Northern Inyo Hospital, the Sierra Sliders this summer, the Bishop Union High School District, and United We Ride, to name just a few from a very long list. ESCA works with Northern Inyo Hospital yearround. The Hospice of the Owens Valley is closely tied to Pioneer Home Health Care and the Northern Inyo Healthcare District, and the program is in full operation, serving 35 clients last year, says Pat West, Administrator at Pioneer Home Health Care. “When someone you love has an advanced lifelimiting illness our Hospice team is there to offer options that maximize comfort and maintain dignity. Hospice treats the person instead of the disease.” This is a specialized care, coordinated with the physician, and the team of hospice volunteers and personnel. SEE CONCERT CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Annette Barnes, a Certified Home Health Aide says, “We serve our patients and their families in their own homes where they are most comfortable. We travel from Lone Pine to June Lake.” It is a big stretch for the smaller program, which offers end-of-life services. Hospice Chaplain Tony Unger and the hospice volunteers provide spiritual and bereavement support to the patients, and to their families for an entire year beyond the death of the loved one. Marga Foote and Jennifer Duncan, two Hospice volunteers, share their support throughout the Owens Valley, and they both note that as more and more people find out about the services available, the more the need will grow for support for the program. They all agree, the human spirit doesn't give up easily, and with support, individuals and families don't have to go this difficult time alone. The benefit concert will help Hospice with much needed contributions to assist in support of their ongoing services. SCAMP, the Sierra Communities Aviation Mentoring Program, is literally putting kids within reach of flying high, with aviation / plane building skills, teamwork, and persistence. Its mission: To instruct high school age teens (ages 15 to 19) in the science of aircraft flight and design and construction. In place since 2007, the teen team members build kit aircraft, and are also given the opportunity to fly. Heading up the program, Pastor Tony Unger notes this is a way for the kids to gain skill sets for life, and learn stick-to-it-ness.

Bring up the Curtain The Folk Collection trio, also includes Pastor Tony Unger, along with Ed Labowitz, and Mike Sirota. This talented and well-traveled band plays many of the favorites from the 1960s, and the family show is sure to entertain all ages with sing-alongs, and good, clean humor.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Vitality or Boredom If you re-read the anecdotal of Adam and Eve in the Bible, you might just get a little empathetic towards the couple’s dilemma. After all, Adams job is to name the animals. We are not sure what Eve’s job is. I admit that coming up with names like hippopotamus and rhinoceros can be a head scratching job, but once done, there wasn’t much else to do. It’s hard to believe that running around naked with a beautiful equally naked girl could get old, but it did indeed. Every thing they needed was right where they needed it to be, all they had to do was stay away from one tree. The story manufactures a snake to entice Eve to pick the fruit of the forbidden tree, however; the story does not take into account of human nature. Put a wet paint sign on a park bench and at least nine out of ten people passing by will test the bench to see if it is dry. Tell people that they can do everything they desire but one thing; they will want that one thing. The whole thing was a set-up. So man was cast out of Paradise, and they even put up guards so they couldn’t return. We are made in the Image and After the Likeness of God, which means we are the nature of God. Every one of us has a purpose and every one of us must overcome challenges to meet that purpose. The challenge maybe going to school or taking a lesser job to learn the rudiments of the job desired, or it may be competing for the job, or even creating the job itself. Challenges allow you to hone your skills. If it appears there are forces aligned against you, you have attracted them. The story of the Garden of Eden plays over and over. A car battery has a positive post and a negative post. They are both needed to empower the car. Edison developed direct current to light his light bulb, however; it took Tesla’s indirect current to make it useful. A few years ago there was a newspaper in the mid-west the vowed to print only positive stories. It closed its doors, because of a lick of interest Baby chicks will not survive unless they are allowed to struggle to get out of the egg. The most popular TV shows involve crime solvers and medical shows. Why, you may ask? My wife used to say that people are fascinated with evil, but I don’t believe that. I believe we like to see justice done and improbable healings. We all love a mystery, else why would we look to religion to save us. Challenges take it to the status quo. The Universe is in constant movement as is the life we live. There is no place to become stagnant. We must move with the flow of spirit. Every day we awaken to a new day, a new experience and a new opportunity. The flow of life is new and ever upward. The past is past and does not need to be dragged into the new day. Get busy living. ‘Get on the bus Gus.’ God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
