Here’s to BUHS, You’re 100 Years Old! Bishop Union High School celebrates a century in the Owens Valley

Bishop, CA—The Bishop Union High School building turned 100 years old (April 8, 1922) this past April, and on June 18, 2022, the building received a proper community dedication. The E Clampus Vitus, Slim Princess No. 395 set the tone of the dedication with some fascinating BUHS artifacts, which were uncovered by the members of ECV Slim Princess No. 395. A treasure hunt for the cornerstone of the 1922 building uncovered (after a couple of unsuccessful searches) a time capsule, left by the class of 1922. Sealed (soldered shut) in a copper box were lists / rosters of students, faculty, board members, a 1922 silver dollar, a transcript of the 1922 dedication, and a photo of the student body. These memories from the past were on display, and ECV Slim Princess No. 395 Humbug, Jeff Barnett, helped visitors understand the great hunt for the time capsule. The Bishop Union High School was constructed for $211,000 (originally thought $150,000 would do it), and was designed for 300 students. The Governor of California,www.thesierrareader.com William Stevens, gave a speech, and the yearbook, “El Pinon,” was signed on the last day of school.

The organization began in 1845, in West Union, Virginia, with Ephraim Bee listed as the founder. “Clampers” reached a peak in the 1870s, and they are known for their “rowdy nature,” and for being the group miners could join, without the formalities of the other organizations. Famous members included: Ulysses S. Grant and Mark Twain. Clampers of the Gold RushMay days meetings, 27held – June 2, 2021 called “The Hall of Comparative Ovations,” at the back of saloons, and they have 46 chapters across the West.
