What’s Opening Up? Plan ahead and reserve camping, lodging, Yosemite and sightseeing in the High Sierra

Photos: 1 Lodging in the High Sierra starts back up this month, and favorite places to stay are filling up quickly. Bishop Creek Lodge, near Bishop, CA, is a historic resort, and a local dining favorite for residents escaping the summer valley heat.

will begin to open on the Inyo National Forest. Private campgrounds have opened, but at limited capacity. Almost everything open is operating at 50% of capacity, and just “dropping in for a quick visit / overnight stay,” probably isn't going to happen. Lodging is also opening up (as of June 19), but again at 50% of capacity, due to Covid-19 restrictions for social distancing. You will need to wear a mask if you are in the general public areas of these lodgings, if you cannot maintain six feet of distance. Governor Gavin Newsom required Californians to wear facial covering on June 18, and this applies to everyone visiting and working at businesses, lodgings, and public spaces. Businesses can lose their ability to conduct business, and be shut down if they don't abide by these mandates. A visit to Yosemite is going to require a “day-use reservation.” No exceptions! Even if you are camping at the only campground open, Upper Pines, or staying at Wawona Horse Camp, you must still have a “day-use reservation.” Period. YARTS and touring buses will include this day-use reservation in your ticket on the transportation. Reservations for day-use are obtained online at recreation.gov. According to Yosemite National Park's website, 80% of the day-use permits are given online, for example starting July 1, at 7 a.m., you can get a day-use reservation for August visits, and 20% of the day-use reservations can be obtained for two days ahead of day-use reservation dates (for example, on July 1, at 7 a.m., you can get a day-use reservation for July 3). There are also SEE OPENING ON PAGE 9

By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—More and more of the state of California's attractions are opening, with restrictions in place, and as long as the state and local health mandates are observed (like wearing a mask when out in the public spaces / businesses), people are able to enjoy many of the traditions of summer. It's taken a bit of time to figure out how to get many of the businesses and services up and running again, but the Eastern Sierra region is welcoming more visitors and residents to recreating every day. Visitors are reminded that our area functions with volunteers for emergencies, such as search and rescue, fire calls, accidents, and EMTs. It doesn't take much to overburden our medical / emergency resources, and everyone is reminded to recreate safely, responsibly, and respectfully. Pack out trash, don't build campfires when dispersed camping (fire restrictions prohibit campfires right now, unless you are in a designated campsite, with an appropriate fire permit), and please dispose of human / animal waste properly (there's nothing nastier than tracking people or animal poop around a camping site!).

What's Open, and What Needs a Reservation? First and foremost, the way businesses, lodging, camping, and sightseeing are going to move forward is with reservations. Want to camp? Beginning June 30, campgrounds

2 Camping is one of the most popular activities in the High Sierra, and beginning June 30, more of our campgrounds on the Inyo National Forest will be opening up.
