Seasons To Live By

Let the Summer Fun Begin By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen

Eastern Sierra, CA—If ever there was a reason to celebrate the first day of summer, it's been this year. Seem-

ingly endless days and walls of snow in the High Sierra and backcountry, brought the let's-get-outside and celebrate spirit to the eastern Sierra. Summer Solstice gatherings were in as much abundance, as the “block party”

anniversaries, memorials, free concerts, free camping, and plenty good eats. A big thank you to all our communities of folks and travelers, who gave us an excellent start to the summer season.

Manor Market's 50th Anniversary- “The Block Party of the Year” There is not an Owens Valley family, in our lifetimes, which will be able to claim as much for being a true “corner market,” that is not a little chicken! The Oneys, beginning with Troy and Susie, and now Kyle, Manor Market's owners in Bishop, CA, threw one heck of an anniversary party, Saturday, June 22, and their 50th year in business turned out to be “The Block Party of the Year.”

Manor Market's 50th anniversary party celebrated with free hamburgers, tasty meats by Piedmontese (served by Shaun Loveseth); Miller and Sons Barbecue Sauce, mother and daughter team, Chalese and Casey Miller, bringing their Rock Creek Lake Resort smoked meats and barbecue sauces, Manor Market's great watermelon eating contests, and the wonderful market staff who enjoyed themselves as much as the rest of us.

Mill Creek Station's Summer Solstice Party in Round Valley Playing on our heart-strings, Roger Derryberry and Mary Lou Long, once again proved up their claim to a magical place in Round Valley, CA. The Ol' Bly Quarry came alive for a tribute to the late John Bacher (1957-2009), who graced our canyon walls for many decades.

From left: Susie and Troy Oney, the first family owners of Manor Market; Noe Gadea, publisher of The Sierra Reader; Manor Market's mascot, the Big Chicken (granddaugher Haley Oney wearing the honors), and Haley's dad, Kyle Oney celebrating the market's 50th anniversary.

Sax Fifth Avenue band, with various musicians from around the eastern Sierra, entertain from Mill Creek Station's outdoor stage while the crowd danced the night away.

Sunshine and the Longest Day of the Year at the Tri-County Fairgrounds

dle Hands Stringband, “Born in the Mountains,” band members, from left, Kyle Oney (on the washboard joined the band for fun), Orion Boucher, Annie Barrett Cashner, and Ray Finch provide music for “The Block Party of the Year,” at Manor Market's 50th anniversary. This band also played the day before at the Summer Solstice party at Mill Creek Station in Round Valley, a double-gigster band.

The Tri-County Fairgrounds hosted its first summer party at the newly renovated Berger Solar Electric Stage, and the Andrew Webber Blues Band, and Hurricane Hoover and Bob Snow, gave the crowds something the dance about all afternoon on June 21. Many people hung out for the evening, danced, enjoyed good food and drink, the lush grass, big shade trees, and the delightful bands. SEE SUMMER CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

It’s Baby Season! All around us proud bird, mammal, and reptile parents are introducing their babies to the world. Unfortunately, accidents can happen during this most crucial time of a baby's life. Parents might be killed, trees with nests might be cut down, or flooding might disturb a burrow or den, to name just a few. All of these scenarios bring babies to Wildcare Eastern Sierra. The ultimate goal for all animals that come to us is release back to the wild. For uninjured babies, the first effort is to try and get them back with their parents as quickly as possible. Recently we found ourselves tasked with this challenge for: Three eyes-closed baby raccoons Five nearly grown house finch babies One mallard duckling A nest of newly hatched house finch babies Three young ravens To find out what happened to them all, read the most recent article in the Living with Wildlife series written by our founder and executive director, Cindy Kamler. Please give today if you can, and help us help the baby wildlife up and down the Eastern Sierra. Go to eswildcare.org. Living with Wildlife is a program of Wildcare Eastern Sierra dedicated to helping the people of the Eastern Sierra live in harmony with our wild neighbors. Wildcare Eastern Sierra is dedicated to helping native wildlife through rehabilitation of injured, ill, and orphaned birds, mammals, and reptiles, and by furthering public knowledge and appreciation of wildlife through education.

Alyssa’s Story On May 7, 2019 my daughter Alyssa was admitted to the hospital for unknown severe back pain. What they discovered were lesions on her spine in several locations, a mass in her left shoulder and spots on her hips. After weeks of testing they discovered she has Stage 4 Ewing's Sarcoma. It grows in the bones and soft tissue around the bones like cartilage and nerves. It is uncommon to be found in someone over 20 years of age and she is now 25. It is not caused by any sort of exposure but appears that the cell DNA changes after birth which is why it is considered a pediatric disease. We were given a very poor prognosis as it was so rare. She had her first round of aggressive Chemotherapy on May 30. After which time she became very sick and ended up in the hospital again. In between that time through the prayer chain we were told about a new Doctor who is a Christian and has a specialized type of treatment that involves genetically testing the DNA of the cancer to determining the exact type of chemo to use to kill it. After genetically testing it they figure out exactly which chemo kills that cancer and then combine it with other supplements such as insulin and hydrogen peroxide designed to deliver the chemo directly into the cancer cell rather than hitting it from the outside. After which time the body is also being reset to be able to rebuild the good cells to assist in combating the bad ones. This doctor has treated several Ewing's patients with great results including complete remission. We are very excited to support Alyssa in her choice to go with this program. As you can imagine Alyssa and Zane have already accumulated over $100,000 in medical bills from the hospital stays and testing. They are using her insurance to cover as much as possible but there are still many more expenses including, out of pocket expenses, remaining medical bills after insurance has paid their part, special diet, supplements, and medications. She will begin this new treatment plan after the genetic testing comes back in roughly 3 weeks. Funds are needed immediately to assist in the medical expenses that have been and are to come. While we greatly appreciate all and any donations we do not want anyone to feel obligated in any way. Give what you can if you can. To donate to support Alyssa Cochran (Chinzi) go to www.gofundme.com/f/cancer-sucks-andso-does-the-bill, or go into any Chase bank and ask to deposit into Alyssa Cochran’s checking account number ending in 6861. The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Finding the Real World Newspapers, magazines and every element of the media paint a pretty bleak view of humanity, what with their emphasis on political haggling, crime and acts of crimes against humanity. By and large, their stories are about an extreme minority of the population, but they tell the story, as if it is inclusive of everyone. Rather than be swayed by their negative and limiting stories, we should remind ourselves that the Universe is a spiritual system designed and created by an Infinite System and that you and I are spiritual beings capable of health, capable of ease, capable of intelligence, capable of functioning wisely in this good world of ours. We need this reminder to bring us back to reality. That reality is that life is essentially creative and valuable, that it can be life in a fruitful way, that we can accomplish, achieve, and become the recipient of the normal, natural and right good. We are in this world to experience this natural good. That love, perfect health and prosperity are all elements of the good, we can reach out by choice ands claim them all. No begging or pleading need apply. The Bible tells us to come boldly to the throne of Grace. Speak your word with conviction and all doors are open to you. We also need to be reminded that the groups and individuals showcased on the news outlets are experiencing the results of their consciousness. It really has no claim on you, other than to have compassion on their plight. All of us has made some bad decisions in our experience, however; the wise correct their choice when they become aware of them, but the foolish continue in their way. Infinite Intelligence and Divine Wisdom created an intelligent Universe. Man was created in the Image and after the likeness of God, however, man was given choice. Without choice we would cease to an individual, knowing partner with the Divine. To affirm your established partnership in the Universe, Raymond Charles Barker offers this treatment. MY PRESENT WORLD, RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW, IS SATURATED WITH A DIVINE INTELLIGENCE, A CREATIVE PURPOSE, A RESPONDING LIFE, FOR THAT WHICH CREATED ME THAT CREATED ME OUT OF ITSELF. THEREFORE. I AM LIVING THAT LIFE THAT IS THE LIFE OF THE UNIVERSE. I AM LOVING WITH THAT LOVE THAT IS THE LOVE OF THE UNIVERSE. I AM THINKING WITH THAT MIND THAT IS THE MIND OF THE UNIVERSE. “I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE” (John 10:30). “HE THAT SEETH ME SEETH HIM THAT SENT ME” (John 12:45). THESE STATEMENTS ARE TRUE OF MYSELF BECAUSE THEY ARE TRUE OF GOD. Take a vacation from the news if it disturbs you. If you must watch, say a little prayer for those you watch. Know that life sustaining and maintaining good is available to all who choose it. Make your choice and rejoice. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
