Summer Moves Forward in the High Sierra 2020 Fishing, shopping, casino, restaurants, salons, barbers and church services open with restrictions put in place By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA— Inyo and Mono Counties are opening more businesses, and recreation, based on the state's early Stage 2.5 in the reopening plan (there are four stages). And, both Inyo and Mono Counties are complying with the state's requests for the variances (via an attestation form) to continue moving the counties into the next stage. Stage 2.5 allows for the opening of barbershops, salons, retail shopping, and dine-in restaurants, with restrictions. Universally, masks are to be worn whenever you are in public places, businesses, grocery stores, and when social distancing is not possible. Proper hand sanitizing is also a requirement for these businesses and services to do business. The state says 53 of its 58 counties are ready to be in stage 2.

The Paiute Palace Casino plans on reopening on Monday, June 8, at 6 p.m. Guests will have their temperature taken (noncontact temporal scan), a mask must be worn at all times, and no smoking inside the casino. The “casino will close from Sunday to Thursday, from 1 a.m. To 7 a.m., and Friday to Saturday, from 2 a.m. To 7 p.m. for deep cleaning and sanitation.� There will be capacity lim-

its. There are limited camping venues (privately owned) open at this time, and the Inyo National Forest's campgrounds will not be available until June 30. Dispersed camping is available, however, many who are visiting these forest and desert lands might not be taking advantage of the RV dump stations, and many are not picking up after themselves. These problems are being looked at by the counties. Citizens are being advised to recreate near their homes, and avoid road trips or out-ofstate travel, unless necessary. The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve is open, 7 a.m.- 8 p.m., with limited parking for day use. The Bodie State Historic Park is open, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., for day use, with outdoor self-guided tours. The

historic buildings are closed. No drones at Bodie (per CA Code, Title 14, Section 4326 A). The fishing season is in full swing, with Lake Sabrina (boat rentals, bait and tackle, cold drinks, but no cafe), Crowley Lake (marina from 6 a.m.-9 p.m.), Bridgeport Reservoir, Twin Lakes (Bridgeport) and

Many citizens took it upon themselves to honor our nation's fallen service members by placing flags on grave sites at cemeteries around the area for Memorial Day. Caryn and Joe Todd, owners of Alpine Signs and the 395 Store, downtown Bishop, CA, spent time at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop, CA, carefully placing flags on grave sites. “At any cost, we will honor our fallen for our freedom,� Caryn said. Further north, in Carson City, Nevada, the Elks BPO Lodge # 2177 took time to place flags on graves at the Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Topaz Lake (fishing is legal with a California or Nevada fishing license) available to boaters. The road to South Lake (Bishop area) is under construction, so expect delays. Fishing season normally ranges from the last Saturday in April, to November 15, on most streams, lakes, and rivers, although there are special restricted areas that are accessible for year-round fishing, including the Pleasant Valley Reservoir, parts of the Owens River, parts of the East Walker River and Hot Creek in Mono County. A fishing license is necessary for anyone fishing, age 16 or older, and the license must be on your person while you are fishing. You may keep five fish a day, with 10 in possession, during the regular fishing season. Some areas, like on

As the nation opens back up for business, so is the Northern Inyo Healthcare District. The District remains operational with a few limitations. The District asks those returning to its laboratory for blood work to help the District keep all returning patients safe by remembering to schedule their lab appointments. Two options are available for lab draws at this time. Patients may request an in-house lab draw. This means they would enter the hospital lobby, check-in with admissions, answer COVID-19 screening questions, and then be escorted to the lab room for their draw. Hours for in-house draws are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Alternatively, if the test allows and time permits, patients may request a drive-up car appointment. This allows patients to stay in their vehicles as masked and gloved NIHD phlebotomists come to them in the hospital parking lot. Car appointments are limited to morning hours, Monday through Friday, 6 -11 a.m., due to the increasingly warm weather. No car appointments are available on Saturdays due to staffing. NIHD requires patients and their staff to wear masks at all times while on the NIHD campus. Those needing a mask will be given a Project Cover-Up fabric mask for their visit at check-in. According to Diagnostic Services Director Larry Weber, the District is experiencing heavy walkin visits for blood draws. While staff welcomes the return to the hospital for such services, it is also filling up the waiting room areas. “We’ve taken steps to promote physical distancing in all our wait rooms,� Weber explained. “We’ve essentially eliminated about half of our normal seating, so when we experience a large number of walk-ins, we struggle to meet those physical distancing requirements.� Weber strongly suggests patients make a lab appointment when given draw orders by their primary care providers. “This is a system we went to more than a year ago, and it has worked out very well, resulting in minimal delays for patients,� Weber said. “It also helps us better plan for the arrival, screening, and safe care of the patients.� To make a lab appointment, call (760) 873-2155.
