Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly

Playing in a different key in life Pleasant Valley Associates add William “Bill” Schuck, Jr. to its ensemble By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—People on the frontier of thingsself-taught, adaptive, are the individuals who remake life around town-it's a mindset...living on any frontier. Everyone's notions about living on the landscapes of the eastern Sierra would agree...they are as individual, as it gets. Historically, millennially-speaking, housing on any frontier is difficult, at best. There is not a western story repeated that doesn't include where you call home, for a time, and that doesn't also include on a remote landscape, a disSEE SCHUCK, JR. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 (at left) Pleasant Valley Associates adds William “Bill” Schuck to Stan Smith's real estate ventures. Schuck, a well-known musician and music teacher in the eastern Sierra talks with The Sierra Reader about real estate needs in the region.

cussion about the housing situation. It behooves everyone's interests to know people who have some ground truths. Enter the new ways of thinking. Schuck says he finds it interesting that the “young professionals,” mid-30s, are “looking at Bishop as the next spot.” Whether this is “serving their needs,” or there is enough growth in town to have “collective interests,” or the Internet allows us to work from atop a Sierra vista, or “All of the above,” as he adds. He envisions a “different way of looking at the world,” and it's a “frontier mental.” And, its core is “living less, with more.”

Pleasant Valley Associates (at left) Stan Smith and Bill Schuck took time to discuss the elements and history of real estate needs in the eastern Sierra with The Sierra Reader at the historic Laws Railroad Museum, near Bishop, CA. Laws was a railroad town built in the early 1880s, and the first trains arrived in 1883. Smith and Schuck are standing aboard the Southern Pacific's Engine No. 9, the “Slim Princess.” This 1909 Baldwin 4-6-0 narrow gauge engine chugged up the Owens Valley, from Keeler to Mound House, Nevada.

With a different mindset The long train ride from Los Angeles to Laws, CA took about two days, in the 1900s, on the Carson and Colorado Railroad's link to the Owens Valley in California's eastern Sierra (at Owenyo, where overnight accommodations were made for the passengers going north to Laws, and Mound House, Nevada). During the 1920s, there was a six-day-a-week train arriving with passengers, homesteaders, merchants, miners, families, and there was an overnight sleeper, so folks didn't have to stay in the Owens Valley, to make a through-trip. But, those who did come by the Slim Princess, in the 1880s to 1960, later riding on the Southern Pacific's rails, came for what they thought would make for a better life, and sustain them. “Bishop Creek” or Laws served as a depot, one of many along the C & C's eventual 300-mile railroad line, and it brought in immigrants, emigrants, commerce, industry, agriculture, pioneers, and vintage experiences, many of which can be found by talking with any number of older, valleybased families, with ties to Nevada, and beyond. The Southern Pacific Railroad bought the C & C in 1900, and R. J. Laws, the Superintendent, stayed on at the depot. Highways took over in transportation in the 1950s and 1960s, but some centers of commerce remain today, like Mojave, Bishop, Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine, Mammoth Lakes, June Lakes, Lee Vining, Bridgeport, Coleville, CA, and Yerington, Tonapah, and Fish Lake Valley, Nevada. (Sources: Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Site and The Story of Inyo, by W.A. Chalfant:

1922, 1933, and 1975.) The Sierra Reader took a stroll through the Laws Railroad Museum's grounds last month, to discuss the attributes of real estate in the eastern Sierra and on a frontier landscape, with uncommon boundaries. Schuck and Smith played it up in the old Silver Canyon Sa-

calls, “Escapism.” The small town atmosphere, away from the big city, all hold allure, Smith continues, as well as a “trip to get away, and the world-class skiing and snowboarding.” It's a “friendly, safe community,” and that allows people to “socialize, and form community groups.” Being

loon, a homage or sorts, showing a respect or admiration for their own roots as musicians in a western township. Schuck's fingers rambling over the old dusty rinky-tink piano's well-used keys, and Smith, picking up his trumpet to sound some old-fashioned western town riffs, do-dahs, do-dahs. They both had an appreciation of the historical significance of their associations, and Schuck sums it up in saying, finding a home ground is a reflection of yourself. “I believe their home is the ideal self, a refuge, and a place of wellbeing. The home or business can reflect the attributes of nature in dayto-day life. Why not have a home that reflects you, the site and the occupants? A place that sustains them, and causes them to grow as human beings.” Smith echoes those sentiments in believing a lot of people move to the eastern Sierra region in what he

both “isolated and insulated,” Smith notes, are reasons why people visit here, but eventually move here permanently. Smith represents all aspects of real estate opportunities, and is a long-time resident in the region. He is a part of veterans' ceremonies, many times playing Taps, and is a community service club member of many decades. Schuck also relates a code of the West, he learned from his underscores for the silent films of the Lone Pine Film Festival. Those films reveal a way to live on any frontier, and that is the way we do business, says Schuck. It's seems apropos, in this historical setting, a town begun at a bend in the Owens River, almost 160years ago, becomes the focal point of another conversation about real estate trends in 2019. It's all about making and keeping connections in time, no matter what key of life you are playing in at the moment.

The Use of Mind

by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science

Good and Very Good It is ridiculous to think that I was created so that I could be sick. It is ludicrous to believe that my mind was created to be stupid or neurotic. It is equally wrong to think I am in this world to be poor, unhappy and lonely. Yet there are many people that are always negative. They know they will get sick, and that their job won’t work out, and they can’t maintain happiness. They live in a world of negatives. I am grateful I believe what the Bible tells us about Creation when God looked at all He had created and called it good. We are here as part of that good to experience that good. No one would argue that sickness, poverty, unhappiness and neurosis is good, yet there are so many that have chosen that route. Raymond Charles Barker said, “We need to remind ourselves that the universe is a spiritual system designed and created by an Infinite Wisdom and that you and I are spiritual beings capable of health, capable of ease, capable of intelligence, capable of functioning wisely in this good world of ours.” We exist in a universe that is good and very good, and we are here to experience good. Those living in their world of negatives have many reasons why they approach life the way they do. “It is not their fault.” They say. They are the victim of circumstances, or didn’t get the breaks, or even, conditions didn’t warrant optimism. Possibly, they had an unhappy childhood, or they were born on the wrong side of the tracks. Regardless of the reason, they have elected to stay in that position. It all boils down to making a decision which way you want to go. Just contemplating changing your course is the first step to a new you. Even though there maybe some residual negativity abounding in your life, which may be part of the momentum you have created, as you keep your decision to turn your life around, it will dissipate. Barker submitted this treatment to make it personal to you. My present world, right here and right now, is saturated with Divine Intelligence, a Creative Purpose, a Responding Life, for that which created me, created me out of Itself. Therefore, I am living that life that is the life of the Universe. I am thinking with that Mind that is the Mind of the Universe. ”I and my Father are One.” (John10:30) “He that seeth me seeth Him that sent me.” (John 12:45) These statements are true of myself because they are true of God.” Repeat this treatment as you feel the need. Welcome to this wonderful world. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
