Judge Place takes his place, on the Bench
Inyo County Superior Court and the Honorable Judge Stephen Place By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—The path to a Superior Court Judge in Inyo County was established in the spring of 1866, when Assemblyman J. E. Goodall set forth a bill to establish the county (on March 22, 1866). Initially, O. L. Matthews served the county as “County Judge,” with a salary of $1000 (annually). Not so ironically, it seems now, his first case was to settle a nasty water dispute at George's Creek (south of Independence). (Source: “The Story of Inyo.” W.A. Chalfant. 1922; 1933, and 1975) Fast forward to 2019, and Inyo County Superior Court Judge, Stephen Place, is one of two judges, presiding over the county's court business. The Honorable Judge Place and Judge Brian Lamb represent the judicial branch of the county's government, and they oversee the civil (commonly a case of disputes between people revolving around their legal responsibilities or duties, which they might owe to each other) and criminal (an alleged offense against the state and society as a whole) cases, which arise in the state of California's second largest county (of 58). Judge Place notes he will be adjudicating mainly civil cases, such as family, juvenile, and probate matters; Judge Lamb will largely handle criminal cases. Inyo County's court system has two courthouses; one at the county seat of Independence, CA, and the other in Bishop, CA. Judge Place says he is becoming acquainted with his new role in the county's court system. His “new judge orientation” addressed issues related to ethics, bias, demeanor, and “interacting with others” in court hearings. As a former attorney in the county, for 22 years, he's been on the other side of the “bench,” and notes, he will miss his former role assisting clients. He sees his role now as creating a serious courtroom, where “legal rules are followed, to resolve disputes.” He adds, “I don't create laws, I apply existing laws when ruling on disputes.” Rulings or court judgments are made, “based on evidence,” not hearsay, and “the court process is meant to be transparent.” Judge Place will also begin hearing cases in Mono County, one day a month, when there is a need for “an outside judge” in conflict-of-interest situations. Mono County's Superior Court Judges, the Honorable Mark Magit and Gerald Mohun, Jr. will come to Inyo County for the same purpose. There is an emphasis, Judge Place, says, on the individual's ability “to tell your story, fully. It's their [individual in the case] opportunity to be heard.” He explains there are some “mis-perceptions” about the court process, including the notion that court cases are talked about “outside of court.” Instead, Judge Place says, “Evidence is considered, and no more.” He begins by telling the plaintiff and defendant, “Tell it to me now. Tell your story, fully.” And, Judge Place sees more people representing themselves, some with legal assistance (in checking your legal paperwork, but not representing you) from the Inyo Legal Self-Help Center. The self-help center can help “parties prepare their legal paperwork for court, and answer general questions.” By way of explanation, Judge Place says, living in Inyo County presents its own difficulties. “It's a small community, and the need for attorneys is great.” When “legal resources are in need,” Place adds, “Parties often represent themselves.” Judge Place received a Juris Doctor at the University of Montana, Missoula, 1996;
The Honorable Judge Stephen Place is Inyo County's newly-minted Superior Court Judge, presiding over legal matters in the state's second largest county. Judge Place takes his place in the judicial system in Inyo County, California, which is 153-years-old, and counting. Photo by The Hired Pen
and he has a Bachelor of Arts, English, Cum Laude, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, 1988. He has practiced law in Inyo County since 1996; affiliated with the law practices of Thomas Hardy, David Christensen, and Peter Tracy. Judge Place was appointed to fill a vacancy when Judge Dean Stout retired (1997-2018). When not in his black robe and in his role on the bench, Judge Place likes to be outdoors, exploring with his family. He enjoys skiing, hiking and biking, and says, “I love the mountains and deserts.” Judges are a part of the governmental order of things, the system of checks and balances in Inyo County, and beyond. They make judgments and pass down decisions in our serious legal affairs from birth to death, marriage to divorce, name changes, probates, murders, water and property disputes, traffic tickets, domestic violence, and abuse and neglect cases. The Honorable Judge Place adds, he is “learning things everyday.” It's about “educating yourself to do the best job you can do.” He is a part of “issues that affect people's lives. My job impacts people’s lives at every stage.”

The Bishop Lions, represented by club Secretary Barbara Smith and 20182019 1st VP Harry Bhakta, surprised Kathy with a certificate of appreciation from the Lions for her talk, but an even bigger surprise was the presentation by 2nd VP Stan Smith (at right) of an American flag flown over Washington DC by Congressman Paul Cook (R - 8th Congressional District) and a commemorative plaque accompanying the flag, citing Kathy for her distinguished service to military and civilian participants in the DSES special sports programs.
Catholic Mission’s Annual Rummage and Bake Sale April 6 in Big Pine Saint Stephen’s Catholic Mission in Big Pine was established in October of 1981 under the leadership of Pastor Father James Maloney and Deacon John Burns. The initial location of the mission was on School Street in a building dating back to the 1930s. Work began on the permanent home of St. Stephen's as soon as land was acquired on the corner of Highway 395 and Walnut Street. The new church was dedicated on June 6, 1987 with a special mass offered by his Excellency Bishop Joseph Madera. In 2009, St. Stephen’s Mission embarked on an incredible challenge to raise money for building repairs such as a new metal roof, arch portico, flooring, and a new entrance. We kicked off the campaign by reminding people that God looks after us but he doesn’t do maintenances. We have been slowly but steadily adding to our Building Repair Fund and hope to begin the repairs soon. On Saturday, April 6, St. Stephen’s Catholic Mission will hold their annual Rummage and Bake Sale Extravaganza from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Big Pine Town Hall on Dewey Street. There will be something for everyone and bake goods too! For donations please call Rose Todd at 9382911. All proceeds will go to St. Stephen’s Building Repair Fund.
Wildcare seeking volunteer help Wildcare Eastern Sierra, our local wildlife rehabilitation center, depends on volunteers. Volunteers can help in a multitude of ways. Learn all about what we do and the many ways volunteers can help by attending our free Volunteer Orientation (with slideshow) on Saturday, March 16, from 1-3 pm at The Imagination Lab, 621 W. Line Street, upstairs in Suite 204. Some activites include working with the animals. During our busy "baby season," orphaned young birds need to be fed 12 hours a day; some (hummingbirds for example) every 15 minutes, others hourly. Volunteers can provide hands-on care at the center or as a foster parent at home. Patients come from as far north as Walker and Coleville and south to Death Valley and Olancha and often need to be picked up and transported to the Center. Sometimes we have a "pony-express;" one volunteer drives the animal from Bridgeport to Lee Vining; another to Crowley; a third picks it up from Crowley to the Center. At other times, the pickup volunteer gets the animal directly from the rescuer and brings it straight to the Center. Those interested in rescues, when the animal is captured on a roadside, backyard, or other location, can team up with experienced rescuers and learn the necessary skills. Volunteering in our education programs (schools, events, et.) may include training with our education animals or assisting in other ways. Other areas of interest could involve working with our Living with Wildlife outreach, fundraising activities, becoming a board member, and more. Don't miss our free Volunteer Orientation (with slideshow) on Saturday, March 16, from 1-3 pm at The Imagination Lab, 621 W. Line Street, upstairs in Suite 204. Call 760-872-1487 to reserve a seat.

Onions are as old as time, at least 7,000 years old. Egyptians worshiped onions, and thought the odor would lead to eternal life. Manor Market has onion sets in stock now, for the rest of us onion-worshiping-gardeners. Photo by The Hired Pen
By Christina Reed, The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA, and into Nevada---FACT: Onions have been ascribed to keeping the bubonic plague from homes during the 1500s, and warding off other diseases, and vampires, but all of these “silly-isms” are pure folklore, gone awry. Onions are a part of the plant genus Allium, like garlic, which is actually what I believe is really suppose to ward off vampires. And, it's not true that leftover onions are poisonous, more internet nonsense. FACT: It is true, onion sets are available now, at Manor Market, in Bishop, CA, and these sets enable gardeners to get a jump on creating their onion oases. Onion sets are small, dry onion bulbs that never got a chance to grow to their full potential (or allowed to mature); sets can be planted outdoors about four to six weeks before the last killer frost. These sets also allow gardeners to get the earliest onions, especially in short growing seasons, with scallions available within weeks. FACT: Onions share something in common with vampires, the length of day they are adapted to growing or being out in...or in the case of vampires the shortness of it. North of 35-degrees latitude (those are the lines on maps running left and right, horizontally; or places like Flagstaff, AZ or Albuquerque, NM), gardeners should grow long-day varieties, while places south of 35-degrees latitude (such as Georgia) are better off planting short-day varieties. And, then there are the places like here, and into Nevada, like the Synder Ranch, in Yerington, NV, which grows superb onions, in a different zone called intermediate-day varieties. FACT: Following the purchase of the onion sets at Manor Market, find a good, fertile, well-drained, with loose soil place in your garden. Onions don't like weeds, standing in water, and spending time in temperatures below 45 degrees. Onions do like lots of organic material mixed in with the soil, and about one pound of sets can plant 50 feet of row, if you plant sets (stem pointed up) about two inches below the surface, and anywhere from four to six inches a part. Stop feeding the onions about a month before harvest, to increase bulb size, and reduce leaves. FACT: Onions in its infant form are scallions, or green onions, and these can be picked as early onions. Leaving the onions in the ground until the stems bend over and eventually turn brown is an indicator the onions are ready to harvest. Pick by hand, leave in the sun to dry long enough the dirt falls off, and then store in burlap bags or in slated boxes. Air circulation is important, as is a cool, dry, dark place to store. FACT: Onions are poisonous to dogs, and cause anemia, which can lead to death. FACT: Crying, when cutting or peeling onions is caused by the onion's release of pungent sulfurs, which reach our eyes, form a burning sulfuric acid, which our brain immediately says, “Wash away with lots of tears!” Cutting onions under running water slows that tearful process down a bit. PASSES THROUGH TO BABY
The Universe is For You For as long as we know, in every part of the world, man has attributed the care and feeding of it’s inhabitants to one deity, or a series of deities. Unfortunately, these deities are often reluctant or indifferent to the needs of man, and must be persuaded or bribed to come to the rescue of those who’s inadequacies prevent them from helping themselves. The Bible tells us we were made in the image and after the likeness of the Creator. We are not just One with God, we are One of God. God could speak His word, and fully expect that word to manifest into form We are finding that we have the same quality, however; whereas God had a plan for good, we are not always awake, alive or aware of the messages we are directing Mind to bring into our lives. When we begin to realize how our ideas, thoughts and words are shaping our experience, attracting individuals and situations and affecting our body, it is time to do something about. We are not powerless to make changes that can turn lives around, but the work must be done, in order for it to take place. Very often, we don’t think about phrases sayings we are speaking; after all, many of them have been with us for as long as we remember. One of my colloquies, upon listening to herself, found to her horror, she was saying things like, “working her fingers to the bone” and other similar things. While my father would have loved to make as much money as some of his associates, he would equate the wealthy as uncaring for the little guy, and in his mind, he was the little guy. A chiropractor may be able to relax your spine and make you comfortable, but if you continue to utter your frustrations by saying, “that’s a pain in the neck” it will make it difficult, at best. Whether you know it or not, every word counts, even those said in jest, because the subconscious mind cannot take a joke. We are blessed to have the power of speech, but it would be wise to start listening to what we are saying; it might be enlightening also. When I was studying for the ministry, I had to be very conscious of the words I was utilizing. My teacher pointed out a few places I needed to improve. I sought help from others pointing out when I spoke, if I was using the wrong syntax or phrases. At first I became aware after I spoke the words. Later, I heard myself, and finally I could change before I spoke the words. It may seem like a long process, but it can change the quality of your life, family, your job and relationships. When we speak our word, we want it to be what we really want. It takes conscious thought to whole new level. You can have fun with the seriousness of your words, but you know what they say and do. Be aware who is listening, but especially, make sure you are. God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
