Hometown Paper of the Eastern Sierra - Published Weekly
March 19 – 25, 2020
There’s no end to the Outdoor Fun . . . 2020 Fishing, camping and outdoor recreation carries on in the High Sierra By Christina Reed The Hired Pen Eastern Sierra, CA—Getting outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking, bike riding, climbing, walking, rock collecting, riding horses, off-roading, playing with our dogs, or visiting with old friends were going strong in the Eastern Sierra this past weekend, as the world was reeling from the Covid-19 virus. Plenty of folks were in town for the Blake Jones Trout Derby, even in its modified form, and despite the windy weather, anglers caught fresh trout, they had fun with family and friends, and they were all smiles with their stringers full of fish. The outdoors in the High Sierra is the number one draw of this area, and as advertised for decade upon decade, the Blake Jones Trout Derby (for 52 years) provided a great way for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the wide open spaces (albeit, it was windy, but it always seems to be in March). The Pleasant Valley campground had visitors out enjoying the sunshine and the company of friends and family, and although it was tough fishing in the wind, there were plenty of people who were happy to be away from work, the city, and the constant reminders of the things that were going on in the world. The Herrera family came up from Riverside, CA for the weekend, and Lynal said they found a space at Pleasant Valley campground, and settled in for a fun time with each other. They've been coming up to the Blake Jones Trout Derby for years, but this time brought both of their boys, Jesse (13) and Nathan (11). Lynal had stopped me as I was covering the SEE OUTDOOR FUN ON PAGE 8

NIHD’s Rural Health Clinic begins drive-in testing for Coronavirus To help identify cases of COVID-19, NIHD has established drive-in testing for coronavirus at the District’s Rural Health Clinic (RHC). Dr. Stacey Brown, Family Physician and Medical Director of the RHC, said, “We are pleased to announce that the new service line allows for prompt screening for coronavirus through a series of directed questions by telephone and then subsequent testing for infection on campus if indicated. The drive-in testing concept extends the current Same Day service line to the parking lot adjacent to the clinic. The drive-in helps to keep current patients and medical staff safe from a potential infection since suspect cases safely remain in their vehicles instead of in waiting rooms during testing. “Since coronavirus testing has become commercially available, we can safely obtain a patient sample and send it out of town for testing. This greatly helps the local health department and regional healthcare partners with surveillance and management of infected patients, he said. Dr. Brown said the drive-in operates during regular clinic hours, 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday. RHC nurses and providers will staff the drive-in. Dr. Brown said the drive-in is open to District residents who meet current CDC definitions for screening. Those definitions currently include travel history, documented coronavirus exposure, as well as specific symptoms like fever and cough. “To safely and efficiently handle patients, the drive-in will function like the Same Day service with scheduled appointment times to see a provider rather than an on-demand traffic jam, Brown said. “Please do not show up at the clinic in your car without calling ahead of time. Eligibility to be seen at the drive-in starts with a pre-screening telephone interview with a clinical staff member. A determination of the patient’s risk status follows and then scheduling an appointment slot for the parking lot if indicated. Patients will be greeted outside of the clinic at the appropriate time by the provider and care team in personal protective equipment (PPE), interviewed briefly, and a nose or mouth swab obtained. Before leaving, the patients will receive information on protecting themselves and others while awaiting their results at home. Information will be shared with the Inyo County Health Department for community surveillance and follow up as needed. “We hope the turnaround time on the test will be prompt, but the send-out lab may take a while for the result, Dr. Brown said. “If you think you might have a coronavirus infection, call your primary care provider first. If your provider thinks you need to be tested and cannot test you there, have them contact the RHC at (760) 873-2849, and we may be able to help, Dr. Brown said.

The Blake Jones Trout Derby saw many anglers trying their hand at catching a trout dinner. The Pleasant Valley Reservoir is fed by the Owens River, and anglers also fished the Owens River below the Pleasant Valley Reservoir. trout derby, and asked if I wanted my picture taken. This was heartwarming, since usually I'm the one taking the photos and notes. But, the family sent photos of their day, and this brought a smile to my face, since this family was carrying on a tradition, which was important to them. Getting outdoors, camping, fishing, and spending time with their family. Outdoor recreation is not off limits. Breathing fresh air, and getting a bit of sunshine is not off limits. Pitching a tent, eating out of an ice chest, and sitting with family and friends in your motor home or camper is not off limits. Playing with a new rod and reel by the Owens River is not off limits. Riding your rhino or side-by-side into the beautiful desert with wildflowers blooming is not off limits. Taking a bike ride into town, and playing at the city park is not off limits. Enjoying a gorgeous mountain sunset, with a beer or wine in hand is not off limits. In fact, living and playing safely, with family and friends is still not off limits. While the world is spinning around us, and most of the news is something that is adding to the stress factors, it's nice to know, you can still come up to the High Sierra and catch a good time....

The Use of Mind
by the Rev. Walt Sharer Minister / Practioner-Bishop Church of Religious Science
No Opposites to God I was recently asked how Religious Science deals with the devil or Satan. When I responded that we don’t believe in a devil or forces of evil, he asked, “How do you explain all the evil in the world? What about Hitler, Stalin or Genghis Khan?” He obviously thought that no one could do bad things without some outside intervention. My explanation didn’t fit the narrative that was set in his mind, and he went on his way, set in his belief in evil as a reality, in his mind. There is no doubt that some people throughout history have done evil things, but that doesn’t mean there were evil influences pushing an evil agenda upon them. Many of the religions and faiths of the world teach a form of dualism, where there is a force for good, which they call God, and there is a force for evil, which has many names, but often, the devil. These two forces are locked in a contest of wills, which will culminate in a final battle in the future, but in the meantime there is a contest over the souls of the people. The Bible contains Unity as the ultimate reality, not duality. “In the beginning God created the heavens and earth.” And God looked back at all that had been created and called it good.” You notice that God called all that was created was good? If the devil had been created he would have had to be good. He wouldn’t have liked that! If we didn’t have the devil to blame for the bad things we think or do, we might have to take responsibility for our actions. . Jesus entire ministry was about unity. Jesus said, “I and my Father are One. “ The Jews took up stones to stone him. Jesus said, “Many good works have I shown you from my Father: for which of those works do ye stone me?” The Jews replied, “not for those works, but for blasphemy.” Said Jesus, “Is it not written in your law, I said ye are gods?” Jesus reminded them that their scriptures declared the divinity of them all. We are all unified with God. God lives for us, through us, as us, and there is no opposite to God. Again, in the scriptures, it says, “Let us make man in our own image and after the likeness. Let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea, the birds of the air and over every thing the creeps on the earth.” There is no devil there. Those that support dualism point to the story of fallen angels as origins of satan and evil spirits. This is more of a story about psychological disorders than of a powerful entity. When we begin to take personal responsibility for our thoughts, words and deeds, we don’t need a devil. Flip Wilson, the comedian, used to say, “The devil made me do it.” We howled with laughter, because we knew it was not true, but only an excuse for bad behavior. No devil is forcing anyone to do anything. “Ye are gods and all children of the Most High.” Take possession of your own divinity. You are loved! God is Love and Loving You Right Now!
